Evochron Mercenary, the EliteD Clone

Evochron: Mercenaries Thread

hi guys

I don't know if you have ever heard of this game evochron mercenaries but apparently it was designed by a single guy over 13 years. for somebody who has designed this on their own it's not a bad attempt at a space simulator!

Here is the let's play videos on YouTube for it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMyj9Hy4fI4

It's got some very nice features especially for the control systems. As many of you might remember I'm physically disabled and can only use the mouse in conjunction with voice activation software to remap the keyboard controls to voice commands.

I would very much like to have the strafing or roll of flight characteristics on the ALT or CTRL Key and then that adopts that characteristic for the mouse. I would also like the same feature for the head movement of the pilot. this is how evochron mercenarieshandles these aspects of game play.

I hope you like the videos and can see some gameplay points you would like to add into elite dangerous.

I hope you enjoy!

Moved your thread Excalibur to the general gaming section. :) Yes the Star Wraith games are very good indeed. Far too often overlooked in my view, these games provide solid space sim action.

Thank you for pointing me in the direction of Evochron Mercenary ... it seems like a great game ... playing it, it seems that a lot of ideas for ED have come from here ... it is difficult to pick up though ... lots to learn ... still learning... but good game (and that is not a Brucie impression!)

Just tried the demo and I went and bought it and now I am hooked !

I just did some fantastic missions. I deployed a military satellite, I cleaned over 20 asteroids from the space lanes AND I cleaned the solar panels off a communications satellite....

This game is just FANTASTIC !!!! I adore it.
A totally underrated title.

I too have loved this game although haven't played it for a while I did download it again the other day after being reminded of it on a thread here. It seems there have been quite a few updates since I last played it. If you are new to it I will say that is does reward the player and there is stuff to be discovered as well.
I think the main reason I stopped playing it was the severely not-to-scale planets, which for some reason did my head in despite it being an amazing game. I know this was something that was planned to be sorted out though.
tl;dr - great game.

I'm not a graphics wh**e exactly but this game hurt my eyes. And I found the combat somewhat boring which is a shame as everything you read about it makes it sounds like fun.

I have had the game a few month and its now my testbed for my New joystick until i can join in beta :D

The evolution of the developer of this series is amazing. I'm still amazed Evochron Mercenary is only 155 meg and look at what it has, rain effects on planets as well as you fly.....WOW.

Have a look at all these titles. WOW. So many I did not even know about at the time.

LOL reminds me of Lave Radio's Orange Sidewinder but I did a few missions where I had to go out to CLEAN Solar Arrays.... LOL

Great fun actually. :) This game is a real Gem.

Price Drop For Evochron Series

Hi Folks, just a heads up that the Evochron Complete Pack (which includes Evochron Legends, Evochron Mercenary and Evochron Renegades) is on sale at Gamersgate for £17.50. The games can also be bought separately. <Here is a link> if your interested.

Isn't the latest game in the series all you need? The previous ones are just less developed versions, right?

In that case why not buy the latest version for £10 instead?

Each game has its own flavour I guess, but your right of course Tinman, there is no need to buy them all unless your into collecting the series. Saying that though some folk may like the simplicity of the earlier games. It was a shame though that Arvoch games were not included in the pack as these are more combat mission based.

However both Arvoch Conflict (£6.48) & Arvoch Alliance (£7.48) are both on sale separately too on Gamersgate.

I was part of the DarkBasic community where this project began. It is AMAZING what he achieved and is one of the flagship user created games for The Game Creators (producer/creators of DarkBasic).

He's been at it for a VERY long time. Kudos to him for the dedication and staying power. He has got his just rewards.

Elite Dangerous clone? hah! that game is absolutely terrible, has a great flight model, but between massive hitboxes that cant be missed, excessive screenshake when you are hit yourself, and poorly programmed AI that substitute godlike aim with actual intelligence, the game itself is horrible, which is a shame because i was pretty excited about it when i learnt of it.

I tried the demo and thought it was impressive that one guy made it, but I really didn't find it much fun so I didn't buy it.

I have it, played it a bit, but ultimately it didn't hold my attention for long. (14 hours according to steam)

Also - I'm normally NOT one to complain about visuals, but if you look at the history of his previous games you'll see that the visuals have barely improved.
Evochron ship texture 'details' are late 90s/early 2000s style repeating bump maps.

Didn't like the FTL travel mechanics, which was essentially hyperspace microjumps over and over again.
Combat wasn't particularly interesting either.
Mining involved pointing a beam at an asteroid and holding down a button until you randomly got something.
Didn't touch trading, because it would require me to use the travel mechanics that I didn't like. :D

The flight model was the only thing I actually liked about it - since it was like an improved version of that in my favorite space sim of all time. (Independence War)

Had a quick blast on this a couple of years ago when I was searching for an Elite fix. Sadly I am one for the look of a game :)o) so this didn't grab me. Disliked the travel mechanics, combat felt meh. Just not for me unfortunately.

Impressed it was produced by one guy, hopefully he continues to produce and develop the franchise.
