Evochron Mercenary, the EliteD Clone

Picked it up at a steam sell. Only played a few hours but it was a lot of fun. Not the best looking PC game but good gameplay.

Calling a game that was released years before the E: D Kickstarter existed an "Elite Dangerous clone" seems rather silly to me :p

How can EVochron be a clone of ED when it was released years ago? Thats just silly thing to say.

On the subject though, im deeply impressed by Evochron and it being made by a single person without a budget. Its an amazing job done well, even tho the game didnt hook me as i had hoped.

Edit:
Dino said it already ;)

1 guy made this and it's pretty amazing! Many call it an EliteD Clone. I bought it and i can't believe how awesome it is at only $25. Any other owners here?

Yes I played with it, Still on my steam acc. I loved the whole idea and I bought Elite becouse of this game. There are some minor problems with it ofc, but my main reason is that I need better quality. You can explore, find hidden gates, planets. The mechanic is pritty simple, but with real physic and low quality, they could implement some really cool features in the game, like no speed limit and a controllable FTL. U can even jump in a station with proper math:) I also find wormholes and blackholes, moreover a wormhole in the middle of the blackhole... Yes you can jump in a wormhole what is in the middle of the blackhole:) I think it's a great game in some point, and I hope The Elite will implement some interesting idea from that game, too.

edit: However the flight model was great, but extremly hard. I like the E : D better

Didn't you know? ED has been in development since 4000 BC, which explains why they're further ahead in development than Star Citizen. Which ED also happens to be copying.

Elite is to old to call modern games a clone. It is expired.

ED seems to the world a very fresh new game. It is that the Kickstarter mentioned the franchise legacy. And few old or re-entry gamers knows it well.

To me ED will be fresh new game.

I think in that time I was doing Carrier landings with F19 ( F117 was then top secret) from Microphrose.

I bought the game EM to. but give it a short test run. No idea what to do.
GFX are what dated.

Long before Elite D came along I was looking for a modern game to give me an Elite style fix and unfortunately Evochron wasn't it. A valiant effort for a one man production but this is an experience that I needed to be great not just ok.
Evochron has a few cool features like seamless planetary landing but ultimately it does a lot of things kinda poorly and doesn't excel at enough.

Still, those planetary landings! So impressive the first few times till you realize that there really wasn't any good experience to be had on the planets.

Oh and I tried to play it again recently after having tried ED.

Couldn't do it! Everything felt bad and looked even worse.
I feel bad for the guy who made it. He seems ok.

I liked the general flight stuff - newtonian and all that, different to E : D, but I like to play something different now and again.

I found that most of the rest of the game - dealing with space stations, trading, mining, just even navigating to get around, the nav map and so on, all were really clunky and awkward - the nav map in particular - don't like that at all and find it difficult to work with.

I think if the developer went back and redesigned all those interfaces - it would be a much better game. The actual space flight bit is great though.

I agree a bit clunky and awkward but you get used to it.
Put in one of the nice cockpit mods and the nebula mod, turn up fsaa and it looks pretty good,
just a bit oldschool kind of menus and maps.

Semi assisted flight "inertia" type of control is great. Think E : D unassisted flight but with dampeners on pith roll and yaw.
Huge map hundreds of solar systems but you need to find them, only the inner core systems are charted on the map.

When the multi player was alive this was great fun and I spend many months playing this.
Coop and pvp was excellent.
played as a single player game it does get boring after awhile after you've mastered the combat pilot role, achieved full military rank and found a few hidden systems there isnt much more to strive for.
Multi player was the life of this game for me and now that is practically dead, I have moved on.

Hugely overlooked Gem of a game overall.

EM was an attempt to do a modern day multiplayer version of the old elite. The quality isnt that great but a sterling effort from what I understand is a very small team. End of the day it is still a b grade game. One of the biggest problem for me was how other ships look when you get close it, the illusion completely falls apart. Reminded me of the oldbit map graphics days.

Yes a small team and it is actually one guy.

Graphics don't make a game fun and rewarding to play.
Take Iwar for sample
I loved I war ( that's the first one )
It is a great game, and still fun and playable.

How many complain about the graphics in Oolite ? Its fun and playable but simple graphics by today's standards.

Evochron takes time to master flight and combat but once you get the hang of the "inertia" style combat it is very fun.
I should add with that with flights assist always on combat can seem pretty simplistic and very hard.

That's why I was careful to say 'for me'. Having said that issue is not just cosmetic effecting how ships look. Graphics are not the be all and end all for me. As stated I found the issue immersion breaking, but moreover it also effects collision detection and combat.

These things for me were all part of the show stopper. I appreciate this is not the case for others and for them there is a solid game there to be played.

Given the price, and the fact only one guy (plus I think a small team of contributors) is behind it I had no complaints about having bought it even though for me it didn't turn out to be a game I put a lot of hours in. Especially when it also supports things like Track IR. An outstanding effort as I said before. I personally know others who have put a lot of hours in with a big smile on their face. I don't think I can say fairer than that.

Well I wait for I have my hotas. then I give this game and ED another try.
Also read a guide. Play to much on my PS3. So my routine with KB is bit low.

So, this guy, working on his own, was able to come up with a way for multiplayer to work without speed limits... and FD can't?

It was limited: You had a max number of players per server (12 I think, not sure), one server served the entire game universe so there was no way to get more players in, no instances, etc.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Evochron also have a practical speed limit? I mean, it did use hyperjumps for long distance travel too after all.

yes, it is 32 players limit.
Server starts to get a little lag after about 20
The server can have an option to limit players in a sector.
where players in sector is often max at 16 is can be set to same as servers limit.

The was no max speed limit but acceleration became so slow at higher speeds that flying higher then 6k was rare.
Jumps and gates but you could actually fly between systems on normal flight, truly seamless.

Ah ok. Well as far as I gathered, in principle that's also possible in ED, but at the moment the game doesn't load stations and such unless you come out of supercruise. So that's pretty much the thing they'd have to change.

They'll have to change how this stuff works anyway because people have been complaining that stations just "pop up" when you get out of SC - so I think some form of transition needs to be introduced, and the station loaded even as you approach from within SC.
