Exlporing with asp

I know many of my fellow explorers see weapons as pointless, but I always take something to defend my ship. I'm not so much afraid of being attacked in the deep as much as I'm afraid of being attacked on that last few hundred light years on the return trip. It's like Cmdrs and NPCs can just sense it when you have days or weeks worth of work to cash in. Maybe they can smell my fear and anticipation?

Which, I'm also a US Southerner- that might explain my predisposition to cling to my guns :D

Hello,

Explorers Asp?
This is <imho> the best outfitting:

never forget, you have to sail quite a distance with lots of precious data, so you gotta have the possibility to run and take some hits!

Lets go through the single modules:
Cargo Hatch: Switch off
Point Defence: I already needed it on my way out of the bubble - Switch off when you are at the 500 Ly border
Heat Sink: There will be a situation when you appreciate to have one
Power Plant 5A: Out there a lot is about heat, with all the stuff you can switch off, it runs almost in idle modus
You can also go with a 4A Plant, but the advantage is just 0.43 Ly.
Thrusters 5D: The disadvantage of ~0.3 Ly i <imho> worth the better security.
FSD 5A: Obvious
Life Support 4D: Build in the easiest you can get. E-DShipyard just allows to show the Level 4.
Power Distributor: Again - it is <imho> woth the loss of 0.2 ly - Switch off when you are at the 500 Ly border
Sensors 5D: See Life Support above
Fuel Tank 32T 5C: Always take the biggest tank available. Some build in a smaller tank because of higher jump range. But you don't get higher jump range with a smaller tank.
Fuel Scoop 6A: If the budget is tighter, go with a 6B or even a 6C, which will still be good. But if you have the money, do yourself a favour and go with a 6A scoop.
Shield Generator 5D: Again there is a way out and a way back into the bubble. Switch off when you are at the 500 Ly border
Auto Field Maintanance: At the End of my last trip, mine has been empty. Switch off!
Advanced Discovery Scanner: Exploring without? You're kidding
Detailed surface Scanner: Exploring without? You're kidding

Ok, what do we have?
A Ship that jumps ~32.5 Ly
When you switched off
Cargo Hatch
Point Defence
Power Distributor
Shield Generator
and of course AFM
it runs at just 41% Power usage, what means it runs very cool. Because of that it scoops also pretty fast.
The ship has a high range without scooping.
It is well protected and capable to outrun almost any interdiction on your way out or - more important - on your way back in.
Ok, if you want you can expand the jump range about 1 Ly with downgrading Power Plant, Shields, Utilities.
If you run a 6B Fuelscoop you save about 21 millions, with a 6C another 5 millions.

In my opinion most of you made a critical mistake. You are flying in a unarmed, slow and made from paper ships. Effect of that is crying when Wing of NPC or griefers is shooting when you back from one month of exploration.

Of course mass is low range, so you should not make a flying bunker, but you should be able to RUN.

Second mistake is small fuel scoop. For 32t tank a 6C is absolute minimum.

You can resign from weapons, but for a God sake, you need to have fast ship to Run, and enough shields to hold in FSD cooldown + 15 seconds FSD charging time (jump to other system) - Max capacitor and Max thrusters. Remember, greed may kill You.
This is my set:

You can gain a bit more range from weapons, SCB, and getting 3 class shields (and then you will be able to put 3A powerplant). But removing thrusters and boost capacitor is very unwise. Probably you will not use it, but IF, they will save a few weeks of Your gameplay.

And for third - it is good to have some cargo space... maybe you will find something interesting in future ;)

Nah....I run with a 3A scoops that goes up to 176g/s. Not two minutes, and never beyond 64% heat, and I am full.

Will it be faster? Sure thing..also more expensive...but, 2 mins stops when you already know you wont be back in weeks....really not in such a rush....

Depends on style I guess...but not absolute minimums really...

+1 rep for armed explorer. I don't have weapons and will be nebulized by the first thargoid that comes back to the milky way.

My only observation is to use a 6B fuel scoop in class 6 slot, it really makes fuel scooping faster and reduces wear and tear.

Heat sinks are for the weak.

And cannot rep you, so virtual rep.

You spend less time in supercruise filling up your tank. Time in supercruise is the #1 contributor to W&T.

(1) Time in supercruise is almost all time exploring, except occasional drops out for pictures.
(2) Your W&T is 100% after an exploration jaunt whatever you do or you've not gone far enough to call yourself an explorer.
