Expansion Pack every Two Years Plus DLC In Between.

Preamble:

Due to my/our love of zoos and PZ, I want this time to last as long as possible and due to fan’s

Instead of getting DLCs only, I think we should get expansion pack every 9th or 10th DLC. For example the Europe Pack is 1.8. So we will get another animal pack DLC as 1.9. And then we will get a big expansion at 2.0. I think this will be able to extent Planet Zoo’s (PZ) game life for a long period. There are a lot of zoo aspects that PZ currently haven’t included yet; I think expansion packs will be able to add what mechanics PZ is currently missing.

A good example is City Skyline they included a brand new game play every DLC. Like Universities, Airport, and I think there is one for park and zoos. Or like the World of Warcraft (WOW) every whole number update is an expansion and all with decimal place is update with new raids or some smaller features. The game is 7 years old and still expanding. I want to use their DLC idea and turn into expansion for PZ. DLC for PZ should remain as an animal pack or themed pack. With all the Zoos, Aquariums, Ocean park, bird zoos and millions of animals to added, PZ can last as long as WOW or as least City Skyline.

What is expansion concept for PZ like (in my mind or wish)?

An expansion pack for PZ will introduce new game play and mechanics, so the aviary we’ve always wanted will fit into this category. Remember back in the days in ZT1 and ZT2? Expansions like Marine Mania new scenarios focus on sea life, new building props, new paths, animal shows (new feature), and of course new sets of animals. I think Frontier can do the same. More or less like a new game but can be combined with PZ (1.0)

What will the expansions be then?

2.0) Bird Park

Of course the 2.0 will be the all-time ant plated aviary. Honestly, just bird zoo alone can extend the life of PZ for a long time. So the aviary expansion back should have new features like hatchery, I guess similar to the Dino Dig research centre. I guess the hatchery works like animal trade centre, but we get eggs instead.

Most important features to add is the aviary, works similar to the ones like Jurassic World 2. Birds can fly freely, guest can walk-in aviary and predator only cages.

I think this pack to feature new birds exhibit, to show smaller birds. Or add various size editable exhibits. Like up to 6 times the height and up to 6 times the width and depth. This enable player to build a good looking indoor bird house that feature different birds. Seoul Zoo’s bird house or St. Louis Zoo’s bird house is a good example.

I think add a bird show is not too bad either because that helps enrichment the birds.

New animal of course will be more important, since this is an expansion I suggest giving players 30 new animals/ birds.

Since it is 30 new animals, I would like to like to separate into different category.

Between 2.0 and 3.0 will be DLC 2.1 to 2.9 (Theme packs and animals packs that contains land and air animals) these DLC should be biome focus.

3.0) Sea Life Park

What is it remaining after land, and air? Sea of course. I think it is a good idea to have because a lot of zoos have aquariums and sea mammals. For example, the London Zoo, and Berlin Zoo. So this expansion will be a mix of Mega Aquarium and Marine Mania. The expansion will include the aquarium building aspect from Mega Aquarium and the large sea mammal aspect of the Marine Mania.

The expansion will have new scenarios, building props, new paths, mostly lying focus on building something like Shred Aquarium, Beijing Aquarium or Ocean Park hk. Also introduce tank feature from the Jurassic World 2.

I would use the larger editable exhibit that introduce from 2.0, to host fishes. The large tank features for some whales, and traditional habitats for pinnipeds.

Since this is an expansion with Mega Aquarium and Marine Mania aspects, the will b 30 animals and will break into categories. Whales are for educational and conservational. NOT FOR SHOWS.

Again, there are tonnes for fishes to be included in the future. Growing of this game has a lot of room.

Between 3.0 and 4.0 will be DLC 3.1 to 3.9 (Theme packs and animal packs that contains land, sea and air animals) These DLC should be country focus.

4.0) Animal Hospital

What else can we include in a zoo? How about a world class animal hospital, every zoo has the best vet and hospital in a city.

This expansion will feature like Two Point Hospital but with real life animals’ illness and injuries. Players need to build rooms, pools, holding areas to treat different types of animals in the zoo or outside the zoo. Some animals from outside the zoo can be kept occasionally.

During the time you are building the managing the hospital, you wouldn’t be able to manage the zoo, as such a new feature is introduce, the Zoo Curator. You hire one only for a price, and he will run the zoo for you when you are managing the Hospital.

In terms of animals, I think this expansion probably have less, because by this time we have two expansions and 18 DLCs. I am sure there are more rooms for more haha. Since we have a lot of exotic animals, maybe consider some domestic animals too. Since animals hospital sees those the most.

I wouldn’t list them, but I think about 15, and small rodent should be in exhibit animals.

This expansion also features a functional animal backstage / holding area.

Between 4.0 and 5.0 will be DLC 4.1 to 4.9 (Theme packs and animal packs that contains land, sea, and air animals).

My last thought for expansion will be Disney’s Animal Kingdom (5.0), hotel and some rides is included. You know how Planet Coaster ended with something like Universal Studio. Maybe some updated and professional animal editor release afterward. This should being us to 2030.

Feel free to discuss and add, I really hope these ideas will be consider.

Instead of getting DLCs only, I think we should get expansion pack every 9th or 10th DLC. For example the Europe Pack is 1.8. So we will get another animal pack DLC as 1.9. And then we will get a big expansion at 2.0.
I'm not going to go into the whole DLC vs Expansion Pack thing, as I still stand firmly by the fact that the only difference between DLCs and Expansion packs is the wait time ( aka, you get the same amount of content of an entire Expansion pack with DLCS, you just get it in bits instead of waiting a full year to get one big pack).

However, software uses semver or "semantic versioning". It's a common mistake to think that after 1.9 it will move to 2.0, which isn't the case. Semver has several variations, but usually it's major.minor.patch . The minor version can be any number, so the update after 1.9 will be 1.10. With a significant amount of changes, they could decide to make the game go to a 2.0; but as shown in the past Frontier just continues minor versions. Usually a major version bump requires such big revisions that in general people stick with minor bumps. So there you have it, the more you know 🌈 :D

I love the idea of expansions however think maybe more along the lines of 3-4 DLCs between. It’s taken 2 years to get to 1.8.
Another idea for an expansion pack I have maybe instead or as well as the hospital update would be a petting/pond zoo expansion. Adding 10-20 domesticated/farm/walkthrough/pond animals. Pond animals can be introduced to ponds and waters, for example waters that you might have as barriers for monkeys can now have koi or turtles in them. Includes a new transport ride involving a tractor and trailer or mini train ride. Maybe the mini train ride could follow paths and not have a set track. New food can be purchased to feed to the animals.

Yes, IIRC with Planet Coaster they reached up until the 1.13 without ever having a 2.0

However, I wouldn't be too surprised if an Aviary update makes the 2.0 if it has really more new content than previous DLCs (which is in fact what I would like). But I still think the most likely option is just another 1.XX and I'm not even sure we will get flying birds.
But I'm 100% sure we won't get that big amount of DLCs to have a 4.0 or 5.0 and reach 2030... I would already be happy if new content reaches 2023.

I agree. Frontier can, absolutely, do all these things. Clearly, though, it doesn’t require ‘expansion packs’ since they’ve already done all these things in DLC and free updates.

Despite the fact that the dogs sigh and head to their beds when I switch on the PC as they know I'll be on PZ for "a while", I don't consider myself to be a gamer and really don't care what's called what or how it's numbered. I just want the game to continue to develop and improve until it reaches a natural end point. (At which point we'll hopefully get PZ2 with a less frustrating pathing system!!)

It's not really content based, it's by which degree the software has substantially changed enough for it to no longer be considered the same as the first version. So an aviary update wouldn't be a reason for a 2.0 really, it would have to be a massive overhaul of the entire game for it to become a 2.0. But it also kinda depends on each developer and project, at my job we're for instance have a client that wants major bumps with every release. But I digress here, I don't think anyone here is really interested in more about this niche programming thing 😅

Exactly this. People really tend to have a rose tinted view on expansion packs, especially the Zoo Tycoon ones :p

This also ignores the big advantage of Frontier's model which I think is very different to most other companies - they tend to not lock new gameplay content behind paid for DLC so people who can't afford all the bells and whistles can still enjoy new features (even if it is in a limited way). It's all very well people saying they want the expansion model (especially if like me they have the disposable income to afford it) but to be labelled a new expansion rather than just a larger animal or theme pack it would need to have new gameplay mechanics or it would be 'cosmetic'. I'd always vote for more content but I'd rather get it more often and not put new features and mechanics behind a paywall personally. If we get aviaries and birds (which i hope we will) then I fully expect either Frontier will update flamingos / peafowl (perhaps with a wing pinion option) to give basegame flying birds or they will offer a free bird or two in the update and keep the majority in the DLC.

P.S. I'm not saying it would be unfair of them if they do change the model to paid-for features - it's what 90% of other gaming companies do and personally I feel the base game was easliy worth the money but it is not the model they've used so far and I really appreciate that. I don't mind paying for the smaller DLCs and Frontier using that to profit and continue to invest in the game development for everyone.

I don't think they'll go that route, but I'm not opposed to it. I would definitely pay for and consider it worth it. If the trade off is less normal packs though, or more specifically an increase in time between normal packs, I'd prefer it kept to a minimum. By that I mean, if we got pack 9 and then it took another 9 months to get pack 10, with nothing in between, to make up for the fact it's three times as large as what we've been getting, I don't know that the tradeoff is worth that. Maybe something at the very end of the game's content support though?

Now if the wait between packs ended up being only a month or even two longer to get 20-30 animals, instead of 3 months, that would be an okay trade off. in 2020 we were at 4 months a pack anyways.

Well, "Gotta build a mountain from a little hill" right.

The issue is PZ2 is we gotta wait for all the roster animals all over again. Unless, the be able to port them over.

In would be happy to get aviaries and fishes as bigger special expansions which does not effect our normal DLCs.
And the more I think about the life span of Planet Zoo the more I get optimistic that 2022 will not be the end of the game. Last week I had once a look into the steam statistics and what was played on that day. And planet Zoo was played by more players than JWE2. Of course it was just a snapshot but I see no reason to end soon a successful game.

First of all I like how you mention city skylines one of my favorite games. I really like their pattern of expansions either 1 or 2 a year with something exciting and new for us. World of Warcraft continues to push out expansions every 2 years but there’s change/updates in story content and gameplay which brings players back to the game but also causes division and drawback.
I strongly agree that if we are going to get an aviary expansion it would have to be an expansion pack. Many of us have suggested an aviary pack will not be accepted with 4-8 flyers. Includes big aviary designs similar to habitats, along with smaller aviaries suitable for small birds. Also to sweeten the deal give us some habitat birds.
I’d say a dlc or 2 that can give us some stuff and include some avian critters
Another expansion id recommend would be a exhibit expansion. Larger more customizable exhibits that can accommodate critters that are not suitable for our current exhibit size but are too small to warrant a habitat. Maybe it can include tanks that accommodate freshwater fish ranging from alligator gar to piranhas.
I personally would rather support a Planet Aquarium
Interesting idea of the animal hospital and hotel idea

Thank you for supporting this idea, you are right about 4 to 8 birds is not enough for an bird zoo, we need like 30. Same does to sea life park, and as such we need expansions, plus DLC in between. However, we need to push this idea about to everyone and most importantly, Frontier's Planet Zoo Team.

I prefer PZ’s model of 3-4 DLC per year, with accompanying free content including things that are exciting and new. 1-2 would be a major step backward.
I strongly agree that if we are going to get an aviary expansion it would have to be an expansion pack. Many of us have suggested an aviary pack will not be accepted with 4-8 flyers.
Why? The aquatic pack was ‘accepted’ with 4 species which were subsequently expanded on in following DLC. Why would aviaries be different?

Includes big aviary designs similar to habitats, along with smaller aviaries suitable for small birds.
Neither needs to be in DLC, both would be easy to include in the accompanying free update, as done previously.
Also to sweeten the deal give us some habitat birds.

By habitat birds do you mean species that fit in current habitats (eg emu) or just large birds that work in a habitat-tripe aviary? Either way - this doesn’t need anything more than the current model.
Another expansion id recommend would be a exhibit expansion. Larger more customizable exhibits that can accommodate critters that are not suitable for our current exhibit size but are too small to warrant a habitat.
Again, this doesn’t require an ‘expansion pack’ - it would be just as easy to introduce under the current model.
