Expedition IX - "All The Clouds In The Sky"

If you are planning to stay in the region for a while, I recommend to fly 15-20 jumps farther towards the border with Sanguineous Rim (Oochorrs QU-F D11-0 system just for instance) to enjoy the rare view of Barnard's Loop:

Waypoint 42

Excuse me? We arrived at Hind Sector FS-J b9-1 on expedition day 148 at 15:59 Zodiac Time... First of all, the system is a single star system, but then I looked around and nothing, no nebula. I started researching to make sure that we are even in the right location. I did finally see it, a little thing approximately 6Ly from the star you can see a little colorful cloud, but honestly you can see much more using Galaxy map than you can see on my picture (which is already magnified as much as possible without distorting it too bad).

1000p-00002.jpg

This is yet another example that makes me think that EDSM is a great help, but is not really 100% accurate with everything. It is a work of multiple people and data is based on Commander's logs. For places like this however, the entry must be done manually and I am a bit confused what are the criteria for the stellar object to be included or not. I still keep in mind Cat's Eye Nebula - one of the most beautiful clouds in the sky (not included - ~37Ly away from the closest star system), and then we went for example to Skull Nebula (included - more than 40Ly away from the closest star system). Struve's Lost Nebula is marked on the Galaxy map, it is also included in EDSM archives, yet being 6Ly away from it, you are going to have a hard time finding it in the sky. You know what? Even better... I looked around and we are next to Pleiades Nebula... yes, it does have a label on the Galaxy map, we all know what that is and most of us have been there, but it is not included in the EDSM nebulae catalog...

Do not get me wrong, I am not criticizing, I just know we need to be careful and do not rely on one single source of information. Yes, we need to check Hind Nebula next, but then we need to visit also the Pleiades and have some stopovers in Aries and Taurus Dark Regions. At this point in time, I really do not care if those are actually included in any category in EDSM, we're just gonna go there ;)

My original approach to getting as close as possible to the Taurus Dark Region turned out to be not the best idea. After entering the Taurus Dark Region DL-Y d10 system and quick "look around" I realized that the actual Dark Region is hardly visible as at this angle the background was also a very dark cosmos behind it. Few more jumps in Pilgrim and I found a much better location. Judge by yourself...

I know, today is Expedition Day 160 and I am trying to catch up. We arrived however at Maia on February the 10th (Expedition Day 150) at 21:03 Zodiac Time. Longer stopover, but the time not completely wasted. Pleiades Nebula is not registered in EDSM archives but is so "well known" that I do not think I need to do any special introduction. We got lucky and parked Zodiac at Maia A 1. The system is quite big, and the more attractive vistas I found were beyond 300,000Ls from the main star.

As we all know, Pleiades are simply infested with Thargoids, hence why some of them decided to un-dust our trustworthy combat vessels. Of course my choice - FDL "The Last Shadow", but no AX weapons... hmmm. I am so rusty, that it took me a while to figure out how to buy some of those. I actually even took my "Rocinante" for a spin and went to Shinrarta Dezhra as I could not find anything nearby. Luckily Cmdr Kalidas Acoma reminded me that I have to look in "Experimentals"... what a shame :)
For a moment we were like puppies enjoying the first snow. We haven't done any combat for such a long time, that everything felt new. I had to test which one I would prefer: fixed or turreted weapons, clearly fixed win although I am really not good at it.

Day 160, 17:52 Zodiac Time we arrived at Pleiades Sector HX-K b8-0. I chose this location hoping to see the Aries Dark Region. I did some scouting before, but Aries is very tricky it essentially it is not possible to spot it in the sky. We did have a similar problem with Taurus Dark Region, but for that one, I was able to find the system from which I could see the dark clouds with the Milky Way as the background. This time though, there is no such system in suitable proximity to set the Galaxy behind the Aries as a brighter part.
I think I see something here... but I cannot be sure

Do you have any plans for visiting the other galactic regions or areas far from the galactic plan in future?
The current objective is to visit all the nebulae, that said: some of them way above the plane and some of them way below. We also go to extreme points, as I call them "The Diagonals" (extremes on South, East, West, North, Up and Down). We will not shy from visiting other major POIs and are open for proposals, of course along the way the major objective. All of this is going to take FOREVER, but that is the purpose of the Expedition IX ;)

The same day, at 23:20, Zodiac entered GCRV 4981 - the center of Eskimo Nebula. This small cloud of green and orange gases shines bright and is best visible from NGC 2392 Sector UJ-Q b5-0 only 7.9Ly away. GCRV 4981 does not contain any landable planet, or rather no planets at all. There is only one main giant O Class star, 92 solar masses, and one of my favorite "eye candies" - the black hole a bit more than 72 thousand Ls away from the main star.

Expedition Day 161, on 21st Feb 3308 at 3:00 in the morning Zodiac entered HIP 23759 which is the official marker of the Witch Head Nebula. The region suffers economically and communities are in distress.

Day 164, we arrived at Spirograph Nebula. Little planetary bubble, that from outside does not look as green as it is inside. Beautiful combination with the bright light of the central O-class star. There are multiple others, some of them ringed. There are also few landable planets, not too many atmospheric though. Nice stopover before the next waypoint.

1000p-00007.jpg

The system also contains three stellar phenomena, like it or not - all of them are situated inside of the planetary rings. Not a bad combination, though seeing 3 of them I was hoping for a bit more variety. You can also find here one Sanchez Class Science Vessel, not dockable however.

A word from Cmdr Deluvian

An absolute hell unleashed in my personal/professional life and that resulted in me giving up on plenty of things. With a heavy heart, I had to abandon my streaming, hopefully not forever but most definitely for the unforeseeable future.
Well, there are but a few things that for sure I am not going to give up, and one of those is All The Clouds In The Sky Expedition. I may slow down and stay idle for days or maybe even weeks, but I will continue this journey as it's always been one of those things I wanted to do in Elite. Keep your fingers crossed, hopefully, one day the situation is going to improve. For now though, a few updates that I owe you.

Waypoints 51 and 52

On February 25th we arrived at HD 36917, the official reference system for the Orion Nebula. First of all, being finally in Orion Complex is really something. As mentioned before, I will need to work out, how to isolate all the "clouds" to show you some good views of every single one of them, even if they completely overlap/blend. Do not skip HD 36917, but for sure one more recommendation is to visit also Running Man Sector CQ-Y d24 system from which you can experience some really beautiful vistas of Orion Nebula.

A few days later, on the 3rd of March, I managed to move the Zodiac to V1745 Orionis, this time the official marker of the Running Man Nebula. This location maybe brings you close to the nebula itself, but to have a better, isolated view I suggest visiting a few systems around. With a little luck, you can find here a couple of landable planets and definitely some unique landscapes.

New crew and Zodiac reconfiguration

On day 178 we reached Trapezium Sector CB-W c2-4 - visually the closest system to Messier 78. The expedition activities ceased completely afterward though. In the meanwhile big announcement: Brewers Corp. introducing big updates and new facilities for our beloved fleet carriers.

1000p-00004.jpg

Balante. Back to civilization, at least for a little while. The system is packed with fleet carriers. Clearly, the Brewer's Corp offer was irresistible. The crew quickly spread attending to their own important matters. The goal for me and the most trusted and experienced crew members: Ellentar and my XO - Elroy Santiago was not only to procure necessary upgrades but more importantly hire the most effective crew to man those posts. Why, oh why after centuries of evolution still the best place to hire the perfect crew is a local tavern? Well, I would not even try to answer this rhetorical question. Laplace seemed to be the perfect spot. Indeed, after a few hours and a couple of drinks we finalized deals with our new biological officer Israel Cunningham and pioneer supplies handler Lon Dawson.
Must have been around 8 pm when I realized that Elroy just froze staring at something in a distance... "Bartender shift change" - he mumbled finally. I turned around and saw her. Confident and beautiful, she was moving from customer to customer, serving beverages and occasionally making deals for very hot, not necessarily legal items. I did not wait until somebody else does that.
I approached the bar and looking straight into her eyes I bluntly said: "Stellar travels... 1,750.000 credits a week, we leave as soon as we can"
She looked at me and said slowly: "That is not much above average pay... what is your name sailor?"
"Deluvian... Deluvian Reyes Cruz" - I said
"Deluvian... the same one...?" - she looked at me a bit surprised
"Pretty much so..." - I responded
She nodded and offered a handshake
"Tamia Stout" - she said smiling gently - "You just got yourself a deal Commander"
I bowed my head
"Alright then... pack all you need and be at LHL-31Z Zodiac not later than tomorrow 5 pm Sol Time. We are anchored at Balante B A Belt"
"Roger that" - she answered

(...)

I came back to the table and announced that the crew is completed
"How the hell did you pull that off?" - Elroy was clearly shocked
"I guess we were just meant to meet..." - I smiled mysteriously and walked towards the elevators.

Expedition Day 197 - that was a quick run. We came back to Trapezium Sector CB-W c2-4, our original arrival point at Messier 78. Yes, the nebula is just in front of us, but the view is far from ideal. Luckily Trapezium Sector is populated with few stars all around the Messier 78. It did not take me very long to find that Trapezium Sector CB-W c2-5 has one of the most beautiful vistas I have seen so far.

1000p-00001.jpg

It never gets old and those views at least for me are just priceless. When I was exploring, the crew was enjoying new facilities on the Zodiac. It did not take a very long time till Tamia became the favorite of all. It became a habit that after every day of exploration I would sit for long hours at the bar and sip on some good old Malbec.

1000p-00002.jpg

I could not find a good and rich system that would enhance the experience with some landable planets. Maybe because there were none to find, or maybe because I simply missed those while looking for the best angle on the nebula. Enough to say, that this objective I can dim as completed and now we will move towards Horsehead Dark Region and finally Flame Nebula. It is not going to be very long anymore till we complete the Orion Complex and enter the darkness of the cosmos behind. Just a few more days.

And who says that Trapezium Sector AF-Z c5 (the reference system) is the right one. Well, it is right in the middle, so I guess it does make sense, but one thing is sure - if you want to have better vistas, you need to visit all of the surrounding systems. Actually, my favorite location in the region to showcase Flame Nebula is Trapezium Sector AF-Z c4. Not too far off, but a much better view. Still, heavy exploration is advised.

The next waypoint will be even more challenging - Bernard's Loop which is... just huge. If you are right at its doorstep, you do not have the best possible view. Let me work it out, and see what I can do to represent it in my own way.
