Exploration and the map

How come the map is only 2-d basically. It's all laid out on a grid. While I've seen videos of people on PC zoom right into a nebula it didn't have to be on the grid. How do I know what systems are inside this nebula? I want to explore out towards benards loop but I can't fly into these places or plot a rout to them because they're below the grid. Any help? Maybe it's a setting I'm missing.

To put it mildly, every nebula within 2000ly of Sol will probably have been visited by someone before.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't bother though. Go to the Pleiades!
Visit all the bright blue star systems and scan them for yourself.
Take pictures of the nebula getting larger as you get closer. Take pictures of systems from within the nebula.
Come across a blue water world, or even an Earth-like world? Take some pictures.

Take loads of images, and post them up here to show us where you are, like postcards from beyond the edge of civilisation.

It's a huge galaxy, and every journey begins with with first steps.

I decided to visit my favorite constellation. So I'm heading to Orion and the stars along his belt. Then I'll venture out toward the edges... Of... SPAAAACCCEEEEE! I'm a dork...

You know what would be nice when exploring a system? A 3d map of it... So you can plot your course from planet to planet based on their positions in the system... After doing 2 700-800 ly trips out I discovered if you go off of the what's the closest object next, a good bit of the time your are bouncing back and forth across the system in the most ineffective way. Galaxy map is 3d why isn't the solar system maps also? If you do an advanced scan of the system your cpu should be able to pin point your location in that system as well and show you were you are... The 3d holographic display in the control panel of your ship just isn't big enough or detailed enough to tell what's what and there isn't an interface to select the objects while looking at it either that I can see

Even if it's been discovered, if you come across terraformable worlds, water worlds, earthlikes, etc., they are still worth scanning because they payout is good. If there are sites you want to see in the galaxy, don't be dissuaded because someone may have visited it before. It's still worth the trip.

Be careful! Mintaka is a HAUL! So is Betelgeuse! In fact, don't just trust the game to plot a viable course for you to get there without running out of fuel along the way! You need SCOOPABLE stars between you and there. I was going to do the Betelgeuse run last week until I discovered that there are far too many brown dwarfs along the jump path the game plotted out. Too many in a row to make it to the next Red, Yellow or White star where you can scoop your tanks full.

You might also have noticed that the guys at Frontier goofed and classed Betelgeuse as a RED DWARF! LOL! All us "Astronomy Nerds" know that this bad boy is one of the largest RED SUPER GIANTS in our galaxy! You could fit buckets full of Red Dwarfs inside Betelgeuse and still have room left for more! ;)

Have fun with you long hauls, but always check the route first to make sure it is actually doable. The game doesn't take fuel stops into account when it plots a route. You have to do that, which for me was TOO MUCH WORK! ;)

Ahh, padawan - I present to you ... the ORRERY MAP [fanfare]

This appeared during the early stages as concept art, but did not make it into the game. David and Michael have been asked about it many times since and they have indicated that it might be included at a later time, but it's not on the priority feature dev list.

I made it from aulin to alnitak on Orion's belt! It only took my all day because I was scanning systems and planets along the way. In all it was about 758 light years. Sad that someone had been there before me though, I had discovered some great places myself including 2 water worlds and an awesome binary system where two white dwarves were littereally 40 Ls apart from each other. And finally alnitak a big beautiful blue white star on the belt. But I did not see the other two sisters on the belt. I typed them in and they didn't show. I'm guessing they're under another name. May scan around thise blue stars a bit before returning home. I have to get a better FSD mine is only capable of 13.9 ly per jump. Which made for the very long day lol.

I'd love to share the screen shots I took but I took them on my Xbox :(

ya know it amazes me that in the year 2015 this map is no the standard for a mapping system in a game like this. That thing looks awesome, I am by no means a video game designer but I have seen games from 2-4 years ago have maps like this.... we can only hope

Yea I'm gonna make a loop back to aulin today and plot my own route. Came across a lot of stars with icy planets and not too much interesting things yesterday.

If u have a ONE drive account on Ur xbox go to upload studio an save the screenshots clip to Ur ONE drive and then u cn view share ect
