Newcomer / Intro Exploration data wiped on death, WTH?

Much of this is what I'd like to figure out, too. HOW is it saved? Only through selling it?

I also don't particularly care for selling data - my time spent in those discoveries means more to me than the money, which can be made in other ways... What I discover is to satisfy my own curiosity. (I'd still like to find a previously un-connected, independent station, for example, but I don't expect there to be any.)

Lastly - switching ships should retain data. I understand that is ED's mechanic for the pruposes of selling data, but if I switch ships, then back again, both should preserve the data.
It would seem that they're trying to support an environment with SO much exploration to be done, that the 'wipe' becomes necessary to facilitate the game and intrigue about it (to form three distinct 'games' in one: trade, combat, exploration.)

See post #15 in this thread - it works like you think it should work.

just for your info, the first person to sell data on a celestial object will get their name added in a "discovered by" note when you hover over each system object. this data is already being collected and we will be able to see it when the next major update hits (it's going through beta right now)

I Do think the 'Death Penalties' are a little steep in this game .

i think Geographical history , - say up to your most recently discovered space station prior to death - Should remain in your history post revival, for no cost .
This does not affect the Mechanic at all or offer any exploits i can immediately think of.

Star Wars-ToR and other MMo's all have various penalties on death to avoid players bumping their levels - in this game levels could be thought of as Ships and Geo-Data (salable) - however there IS a difference between Saleable Geo-Data and simple saved discovery points , which just give the player a compass point as to where they have been and where they may head in future . No cash advantage, No 'Gear' advantage. just an acknowledgement of progression made thus far as a player .

would this not be reasonable ?

In short i agree with the OP; as this thread is losing topic a little! :)

I believe that the current model works fine - if you have unsold data, it's gone when your ship is destroyed, and if your character dies, their knowledge dies with them. The fact that you, as a player, know where you've been will just make your character believe in deja-vu all over again :D

This leads me to a question.. Is it possible for me to find a list of systems I've visited "first" or do I need to randomly search around on the map for that? It would be awesome to just be able to look at a list of my "firsts" in exploring!

Dredging up an old thread, but I just fell victim to this...

While "dying" should have a penalty, wiping cartographic data means two things - 1) despite being able to jump 30+ light years at a time, we are apparently unable to store data in a space suit... and 2) it reduces the game to a shoot-em-up.

After having spend the past 2 weeks jumping through 200+ systems across 2000 light years, getting interdicted by an NPC Federal Agent for no reason (and I love picking up a bounty after they attack me first, lol). I have NOTHING to show for it. NADA, ZIP, ZILCH.

Now, if I'd spent those 2 weeks shooting pirates or mining asteroids, I'd have MILLIONS of credits to show for it.

They can keep their Exploration "fun." I'm going back to the shoot-em-up. Might as well get some fun for my $60.

p.s. Is the concept of a "Captain's Log" something that is lost in 3301? Or, do all spaceship commanders just fly along ready to alt-tab to their Excel spreadsheet?

And bounties are lost with your ship. And cargo. And missions. If you lose your ship, there IS a penalty, it's not just pay the insurance and continue on your way. Which is a good thing, I think, adds the excitement and edge and desire not to lose the ship, otherwise it becomes an easily disposable commodity.

Unless you're ganked by a lawless CMDR for no reason than dropping out of jump near a very large ship. Yeah, I can see how that is fun.
