Exploration Elite?

Why require Mats to service your SRV on field? Well try to break your car somewhere and then you find a garage shop the "will require" materials to fix your stuff, that's why.
I was just talking about the go-juice. But yeah, I suppose busting rocks as an emergency backup might be nice. As the main source of power though, considering our ships, it's silly for the sake of it.

I did it the wrong way by using 3rd party tools to point me in the direction of Earth-like planets, plus the odd Ammonia and Water world, but yeah, its about 320m or so and doesn't take very long.

I think the way to make gains for the 3 main ranks needs a serious overhaul, certainly for Trade and Exploration at any rate.

So the passengers that increase it, do we know how that works? Does a 30 million passenger mission to some beacon provide the same increase as 30 million in exploration data? Or is there something more arcane going on with passengers?

So it does increase rank now, I thought you said it doesn't and I'm confused? Never said it was viable, just pointing out that credits are not the only source of rank.
It used to increase rank (disocvering new mats, and some Passenger runs) and only in small %,Exploration has changed totally since the stuff you quoted, now go nitpick something else ;)

Last I checked, there's several factors - with credits being far and away the most predictable and effective - to ranking exploration.

Credits earned in explorer rank is the main driver:
  • Passenger Tour-the-Galaxy
  • Passenger Research (Deep Space)
  • Planetary Scan Missions
  • Turning in Exploration Data (the most common)

Beyond credits, you also have SRV distance driven - it's very minute. Though it does scale with distance from Sol. In other words, a kilometer driven at Beagle Point is worth more experience (dunno how much) than a kilometer driven in Sol.

To my knowledge, filling out the Codex, unique to you discoveries, and such don't grant any experience - beyond the credits you might earn from those actions.

It's been a few years since I hit Exploration Elite. If it changed since then I wouldn't be aware. At that time, both sightseeing and exploration data contributed to Exploration rank. But it was not one to one. Exploration data advanced the rank faster for any given value turned in. Back then, it was 1 point at Pioneer for every 2 million in exploration data. I kept track of it and made a post on this forum or another about how sightseeing proceeds compared, but I haven't found it. But exploration data was weighted higher. I assume it still works the same and I've not seen anything to the contrary.

SRV distance was also part of the equation as fennster said above. It is a minor factor obviously, but he is correct.

Sightseeing has always been one of my main activities in Elite. Right from the start and I'm even out running one today. When I hit Elite my exploration data was a surprisingly small fraction of the 320m, all due to the fortune I had made running my Interstellar Transportation Company.

Ya i was expecting it to be a billion like trade elite. Figured someone here would know.
I have been playing about 6yrs and received a trade elite badge long before I had a billion credits, but maybe it has changed since then. On the other hand it took me until a few months back to get my Explorer Elite badge solely because I mainly did missions until I bought my fleet carrier and set off into the wild black yonder a few months back.

I'm flying through the exploration ranks without even trying (alt account) so don't think credit thresholds have been updated to reflect income inflation. Completely out of whack now (same goes for trade) compared to combat Elite.
