Exploration, how do you mentally prepare

Just rubbish on the telly so i would prefer to be sitting at my PC listening to 6 music and wandering gently around the galaxy at my leisure. For however much time i have to spare...

all i did was make a goal for myself, head to sag A* then try to find the biggest procedurally generated star so i went for sight seeing only. the first day i covered 10k LYs i was hooked for awhile now im making my way back which is just the hardest thing.

I pick a major destination, then pick interesting intermediate targets to visit along the way. After a couple of trips in the 5 - 7 light year range, I'm on my first really long trip. Eventually I'm headed for the core, but I'm taking the scenic route, going by some nebulae along the way. At this point I've traveled about 7 ly and am not any closer to the core than when I started, but I'll be turning inward to the core soon. I don't usually have the chance to play long at one sitting, so I will be out for a very long time.

I think that the reason exploration works for me is that I don't usually play in long sittings, and I find it very relaxing. I'm in the Beta for World of Warships, so I can get lots action and combat by playing that. Exploration in Elite: Dangerous is my chance to sit back and unwind after a long day at work. So for me, added levels of danger is exactly the opposite of what I need, though I understand why some would want it. For me it is a good substitute for a nice long road trip that I can break up into convenient chunks, taking in the sights of the galaxy in between work and helping the kids with homework.

I'm on my way back from around a 70k ly trip (2mths approx 200hrs) and found it wasn't the initial prep/mind set, but the perseverance to keep going. After a while, although I was still loving the exploring I did get an itch to shoot something, or to try something else, but you are stuck (wishes for a second CMDR :p). Getting over that hurdle and keep pushing on, rather than turning around, was the hardest for me.

Find some good Twitch channels, usually Elite Dangerous onces, to keep me company. Then I leave.

My experience so far is one little tour of about 7k ly (not towards the core). Now I'm about 2k closer to the core on my second trip (but probably traveled more like 3-4k ly due to going down and about). I intend to make this my Sgt A* experience. So much twitch watching is needed.

I sit in my current system thinking about it, then I am still sat in my current system when the thought go's away for ''lets go blow some ships up'' comes into my mind.

I enjoy exploration generally, always hoping that I'll come across something unexpected. But I'll either have audio books going or X-Files or something on monitor two or three.

To prepare myself mentally before I go exploring I watch paint dry.

Trust me, EVERYTHING in life or a game becomes exciting after that.

I considered observing grass grow, but that is a seasonal thing,,,,,,,

If you choose to go down the serious exploration path, how do you prepare yourself? I mean, you can"t do anything else gameplay wise thousands of LY away!

I do two things , I set small targets aim at a star 200 lt yrs at a time so your long journey is split in smaller chinks , and when exploring a system some some stars /planets are along way so I sit and play my banjo:)
