Exploration - Is it over?

Yep it's definitely all over - don't listen to these people telling you to keep looking - IT'S ALL LIES!!

All the universe has been discovered and so there's no reason to leave Sol for anyone else reading this thread.

Now, where's my asp explorer parked I feel like going for a short walk outside, I shan't be long, honest :D

The other thing that works for me is this.

Everyone is obsessed with a 30-35LY jump range. So, if you find yourself coming across a load of previously discovered systems get out of sync with the 30LY-at-a-time jump fiends and take a jump with a length of a random number of LY between 8 and 17. You will likely get into free air.

Flying happy
Jon

if you still have some cargo bays equipped... you can slightly vary your jupdistance by the slider in nav menu.
some kind of "eco mode light". i often use it because the jumps on the brink what your ship can handle are the most "expensive" fuel wise.
pushing the max range down by 2LY saves more fuel than someone would think ;)

Easy fix - have them put an option in to turn the "Discovered By" labels off entirely.

Where they really made a design mistake IMO is when they decided to allow the entire galaxy map to be cherry-picked by filtering by star class for unknown systems that had never been visited let alone explored (all of which appear on said map with details from the get-go, which also should never have been the case). That actually takes the act of exploring (not to mention excitement of discovery) out of exploration. Horrible design/gameplay decision. But the masses must have their sense of immediate entitlement and have everything handed to them on a platter without having to do very much at all.

The Neutron Field has over a billion of them, and many 1000s of black holes, location is in my sig.

Thanks, I will take a look, I have been wanting to go exploring for months but have been enjoying other stuff and not got round to it yet, soon TM.

Dammit, just remembered I have been saving mining since beta, think I will wait for the drones for that though :)

Well, we can tell from hundreds and thousand of light-years away what type a star is, the tech in 3300 will certainly fare even better. So I would totally expect all these stars to have been seen and catalogued with telescopes from a distance, hence the stars appear on the map with their type.

There really should be a tag in the galaxy map for those systems that have already been "discovered".

Maybe 2 tags:
- Fully scanned and
- partially scanned.

The rest would mean no scan at all.

I would go further.

I would suggest that they stop giving exploration credits to previously explored and scanned bodies and mark the map as you suggest, for all clients.

That will go down like a brick budgie to any noobs. They need to be able to find stuff, too, otherwise they will not explore. Eventually, they should start to make systems that have been explored enough known to everyone, and by doing that the bubble will increase in size.

I'm 250ly out from SOL and I've found 4 completely and totally undiscovered solar systems in a row... I bet when I log in in a minute the next system I fly to is undiscovered as well.

Just an FYI, the route planner does not respect the star filter. It should, but it doesn't.

Respect? If you mean the route planner does not take into account the state of the filter in creating a route then you are correct. You have inferred that my words state that the route planning function does respect the state of the filter. I should have been more careful in my wording. :)
Use the economical route, use the plot route function. If one filters on fuel scoopable stars then you can see your refuelling stops, if one has a fuel scoop. In this way one can assess and minimise the risk of running out of fuel. Of course, one would check the route plan at each jump.

That may very well be true in _your_version of 3300... ;-)

Seriously, even if that is the justification, there is still the argument of design for effect, and some things to be left unknown to be discovered other than simply by opening your galaxy map. YMMV.

Edit: Of course, if there was an offline mode none of this would be an issue for those who think this way. <ducks/>

And for non-noobs. Like me; exploring in a Viper.

That's pretty cool, thanks! Far from me, but i'll be sure to hit that on the way back.. Do you know the coords for the field that's "up"?

Go to the co-ordinate in my thread, then just scroll the map height from -1250 to +700, then slowly carry on going up till you hit it, I am not in game but I think it starts around 700 to 1200(somewhere) :)

remember to set star system filter to only non-seq in the G map!

I went on a couple of short (i.e. around 1,600 Ly round-trip) expeditions, one directly to a nearby nebula, the other near a few nebulae; and still found maybe 15-20 "virgin" systems, and well over 100 undiscovered bodies. The closest was even within 6 jumps of populated space.

True, I didn't find anything astonishing, but then if there were loads of black-holes out there, they would be pretty boring now wouldn't they?

I'd appreciate something like that as well.
Technically, I'd expect to be able to purchase either complete Map data from Univeral Cartographics (from any location I choose) - or alternatively purchase entire Sectors in bulk with that simple marker for a rather low price (Fully/Partial/Unexplored).

That way, I could get either detailed info on specific Systems I'd otherwise find interesting - or I can prepare a journey into specific Sectors (I assume something like 150x150x150 LY areas) and have those premarked with the rudimentary flags as stated above.

Always feels weird getting into a new System, seeing "First Discovered by [someone]" on every Object - and seeing "Unexplored" right next to that. Kinda doesn't make much sense that way, at least that's how I view it.

But since it's a hot topic amongst Explorers and future Explorers, it's certainly debatable...

So, you're going to deny players, beginning a new game, a means of gaining credits from exploration at the start of their game. I started my game by going straight into exploration in a Sidewinder. I had no money to buy exploration data: that would also defeat the point of personally exploring new worlds, irrespective of the 'discovered by' tags.
Why not try to view your expectations from another player's viewpoint in future. Please. Like ED developers do.
