[Exploration Setups] DB Explorer

My idea for a setup is this:

At the end of the day we are still explorers and I, personally, don't want to abandon the explorer outfit completly.
Large gimbled Kinect cannon for the killing blows and the two gimbled medium lasers to melt the shields. Gimbled because I suck and need the extra assistance.

Chaff and point defence for, well, defence and a heat sink for rare emergencies when exploring. I skip ship scanners for I'm not really looking for a fight, only preparing for the worst.

Everything A Grade except for Life support and Sensors. Again, still along way out in the big black not really looking for a fight.

Big shield for protection, biggest Fuel scoop possible. AFMU for repair if things has hit the fan and I managed to win/escape and can repair the most important components.
DSS and ADS because I'm exploring. This setup you can run everything if you disable AFMU and Cargo Scoop. No need for me, as a combat noob, to scramble to shutdown/activate things I don't normaly use. Takes to much time since those maneuvers aren't second nature for me.

Millions less than my Asp build even if scooping will take twice the time. But big ol' gun ports :)

Will still fly the Asp though to carry the fuel limpets and a small cargo hold.

As I've said before, I'll help.

But how often does this actually happen? How often do explorers run out of fuel? Granted, I am still a noob, but I've never come close to running out of fuel.

I think you're in the wrong thread ;) but to answer your question, I almost ran out of fuel in a patch of brown dwarfs yesterday because I was chatting and jumping at the same time. I didn't think it was possible, but it can happen if you play distracted even for a few minutes. I have only actually gotten stuck once though, on my 1st or 2nd day of playing in a sidewinder. This was before I knew how to scoop or that weight affected jump range, and I had just upgraded from class D parts to class B, lol. So green...

Without a lot of tweaking, I would run these two defensive comparison builds based on similar performance and features:

I am really amazed that the Asp has only 0.15 LY more to offer in these configurations. I didn't max out the fuel scoop on the Asp, a 6C would still be in order cost-wise, nevertheless the DBE arrives close to 12 million credits whereas the Asp is over 14 million.

The point I want to make is that in the end, the hull does not save you so much, if you want equal performance. It is clear that you can tweak the range more on these builds as shown earlier, and the difference gets more prevalent, but these are the builds as I would comfortably fly them. Only if time and range become an absolute need (Sagittarius A) I would go for a bare bone approach.

Anyway, I like the new DBE quite a lot based on the looks and stats. While it has not become the Asp-Killer, it is still a respectable fine ship and I will definitely give it a try.

Regarding the DBS (comparison stats below) it is a clear winner regarding exploration.

Overall, I see the purpose of the DBS as a long range replacement Viper. I see the two ship 'variations' as a plus for the game. This is a bit like Sedan against Stationwagon.

P.S. Why no AFMU? Of course everyone needs a motivation to return home...
