Exploration ZZZzzz

right now Elite seems to be boring (at least for me)
But why?

Really dealbreaker: that cubic stations. They look like borg made and every time i ask myself which high tech civ would build space stations like this, where there is always the trouble to find the entrace. It sucks.
No in-sys-jumps: which makes Stations far away from the sun reaaally a waste of time.(much time) No one ever goes there. No need to.. just a long travel with no profit
no story.. no real one.. that thing right now is just an excuse. Yes there are players who like storyline missions that lead through interesting sectors and fractions, because they can give a good view of what is out there. Every main faction should at least have a little storyline (introducing the guys i work for, because that makes them alive)

no exploring: every sector looks like the same.. no nebulas to fly through, no creepy aliens.. no creepy asteroids or stellar phenomenas to find. just have a look at the x1-2 exploring.. that was great and there where really creepy sectors to find with wracks, strange alien stations and other things

a really hard to understand fractions system where i never know if that what i've done had any influence. I just can't see that and even if i would see something, the things you can get out of faction ranks (however you get those) don't seem to be worth the time.

Many of those things could be changed easily without influencing the players that like to fly through endless emptyness. just ask around in this community full of great story writing people, to make some cool quests and get them into game. Same with objects of interest, creepy places.. Just start to make a living galaxy.. not just another empy econemy simulation. i think elite could be good.. one day..

FYI: When you have a station of that sort targeted, in the little 3d hologram, there is a triangular shape that points to the entrance. Super helpful. Also, the entrance is always pointing toward the body that the station is orbiting.

Also, there are hundreds of nebula, just not many inside human space - you can most certainly fly to them and fly around inside them.

I agree that the galaxy feels pretty sparse and empty, but I get the feeling that frontier is currently focusing on laying down foundational gameplay systems, rather than on expanding content - However, at current, there is still quite a bit of fun to be had. Try not to grind credits, and just focus on flying around and enjoying yourself.

Firstly there is exploring. I've been exploring. We have entire community forums and dedicated sites which demonstrate there is exploring. There are nebulas located where they are in the real galaxy. You can see them in the galaxy map and plot a voyage to the likes of coalsack or the seagull nebula. Explorers have already found alien artifacts in Elite, how do you know whats out there? Have you explored the whole galaxy? It's pretty big.

You seem to have missed one of the key marketing points of Elite when you bought it:

Its an MMO, it is part game and part sim so everything takes time (Time is the real currency in Elite).
You are a very small part of a big big universe and therefore do not have much effect unless grouped with many other small parts, I mean players...
Blaze your own trail is the story, will you be a smuggler a pirate? An honourable combat pilot or a mischievous bounty hunter? Or just an average joe trading goods?

Exploring is really what you make of it, sure its procedurally generated and lots of it may feel the same yet finding an earth like world orbiting a Neutron star millions of miles from other people is rewarding for some, It falls under the don't like don't do response..

Some of your points about living galaxy are true and it needs some work but there is no storyline, unless you follow the galnet posts. I don't want to be led through on a Call of duty style campaign because 99% of other games do that already :)

Well, the new Coriolis (if there are new ones) should be built with one entrance and one exit. That wouldn't make it easier to find the right side, but would increase the traffic flow.

There is no in-system jump for a good ecological reason. Maybe one day jumpdrives will be allowed to target another star within the same system, but don't count on that.

On exploration I am with you. It becomes boring, even if there are some very well hidden jewels out there (e.g. ringed earthlike planets, orbiting red gas giants or systems with multiple black holes eating up the surrounding nebulae,...). But yes - still not much to 'discover'...

Aim for a point between the planet and the station then turn towards the station you should exit more or less facing the entrance.

Finding the entrance of coriolis stations is acutally quite easy: When looking towards the entrance they always rotate counterclockwise. So when you see which way the station rotates you can always tell where the entrance must be. That may be a bit difficult at first but after a while you'll know where the entrance is without even thinking about it.
It also helps that the entrance is always roughly oriented towards the stellar body it orbits. You may even plan your Supercruise approach so that you always arrive on the planet side of the station, that way you'll nearly always have the entrance in view immediately.

The only beef I have with the stations is the lack of variety. Just 3 models that are even shared by all factions and all look identical from the inside (except the rare luxurious interiors, but those have still the same layout). Even the modular outposts are very similar to each other. Pad 2 for example is always the pad with station structures blocking the straight approach.

still think a storyline would be great to make some real background to this charakters. That Call of Duty Argument don't count because for that players who don't like storys - it has not to be a must. And about the station: whats about an UI that just makes some arrows to find the entrace? and don't come with that is not elite like- this is about a fantasy-future and that kind of technical software would be easy to do in a world where jump drives exist ;)
and about the exploration: well, i can find different looking planets? wow.. that is not the stuff an explorer like to find. He wants to find the unknown. Objects from a strange origin, alien devices.. not planets who might or might not have a ring

But apart from that (which right now makes the "old" x games a better choice to this point): why does the automatic slowdown sometimes work and sometimes not, when i target a station insystem flight. Sometimes it slows down correct, so i can jump to the station, sometimes it just is to fast and i have to turn back. (Every time i use the blue speed, to reach a point, if it is not to far away)

What about real space battles, with battle ships. Heard that this might be a future content and really hope for that.

And what about a faction bar, where i can see how long i have to work till my standing grows? they implented a few bars for minor factions, but not for the major ones, as it seems.

There are many little things that could really do some things to make this game better, but still: more content please. It's one thing to read all the gal net news, and another when these news doesn't seem to have much influence and the fractions don't even have special fraction homes and station, which would make them unique. Unique seems to be the best word to say, what is lacking in this game right now. What makes elite unique ? Besides the grafic, which is pretty nice.

It could be really good some day: but i fear it might be some day far in the future.. but who knows?

Target the station. Look at the picture of the station in the bottom left of the HUD. It has arrows on it.

Capital ship battles are already in the game, often news stories allude to their whereabouts.

Stopped reading at that point^^

smh

Btw. The Coriolis stations first appeared in 1984 whereas the Borg first appeared in 1989, if anything the Borg were stolen from Elite, not the other way around :p

Lots of patronizing posts in this thread.
OP is right on a lot of points, everything within the game is very, very repetitive. The core game play is fun, but it doesn't change over much from the very first time you play it. I am hoping they add more interactions with the universe at some point. I don't need to feel like the king of the universe but being able to have at least the same interaction I do with the real world would be cool.

The Coriolis stations arent cubes, Cubes have 6 sides
There are arrows on the HUD Holo that point to the entrance, there are also Red Lights on the non entrance side and the dock port side rotates anti-clockwise

You have to go find the nebulae

NGC%207822.jpg

Some just start as dots of light

Galnet News for some of the background

You may not like it, but a lot of what you complain about is simply canon - the station shapes are a good example of this. Also the galaxy as generated is meant to be a reasonably accurate representation of the real thing, and does a pretty good job of it. It's huge, so even if they did add a few systems with 'creepy aliens', what are the odds you'd find one? And there are plenty of odd/weird things out there (as others have mentioned).

I know it's not perfect, but I for one find plenty to do.

I set my own goals, and do what I want, which is pretty much the intention I think.. :)

Have you actually flown to a nebula? I agree you cannot actually fly in normal space and have it appear as a gaseous cloud, however when up close and inside a nebula looking out, you can see the cloud body as such.... You can find wrecks and some of them do look pretty creepy especially some of the anaconda wrecks I have seen, these are often discovered in USS's so perhaps you just have not really explored much and sought out the unkown much is all I can take from this... Elite does have 'story lines' albeit short story lines in the form of missions... Hopefully they will add more in depth multi part missions in the future... Here is hoping anyway :D

A backstory on the power profiles would be nice, there has been some minor backstory done for them in Galnet I believe and in the leadup on galnet news since release certain 'people' have had ongoing events of those 'characters' unfolding...

Factions I am going to guess you mean, fractions used to confuse me too as a kid... The game does respond when you do faction missions etc with telling you if you are raising or lowering your standing with them and their influence in the system as well...

If you feel elite is an empty economy simulator then perhaps you need to remove the cargo bays from your ship and fit out for combat and go hunting???
