This is my personal preference, but I'd go void-mad pretty quickly if there was no SLF hangar on my exploration ships. I NEED to go and have some fun (and not risk destruction) now and then and SRV is just not enough.

On the issue of looking down, if not using an AspX or Krait, I use the external cam when searching for biologicals in my Python.
Just level out at about 100m and 10-20% thrust, switch to external, manoeuvre the cam below the ship to 30m or so above the ground and search from there. If you need to ascend or descend due to landscape changes, just switch from freecam to flight mode and adjust height/direction as necessary without leaving the view.
Not as convenient as being able to look down directly, but I find it a workable solution with a superb view.
