Explorer rank ? Confused!

Hi Cmdrs
I am totally confused regarding ranking up with exploration. Posts on the subject are so old , and with 3.0 probably meaningless.
Old posts state 137 mil ish. Is the requirement for elite. Latest I've seen on wiki is 307 mil ?
I just done 10,000 plus trip and got 22%.
Now at 2% Pioneer. Do I have to spend a month traversing the galaxy to get to elite?
Oh , and I an nowhere near the amount stated in wiki to be at Pioneer anyway. I'm totally confused.

Without passenger missions, yer looking at making 360m (I think from memory here so could be out by a few mill) in data scans to hit elite. The threshold used to be less than half that but its been changed when they buffed the payouts some time ago ^

In 2.3 the exploration payouts for planets increased. So 307 million (ish) is what you'd need if you didn't have any pre-2.3 exploration rank. If you do, you'll need less. Also, you can get exploration rank for certain passenger missions, for driving the SRV, and for discovering (certainly raw, possibly other) materials - the 307 million is what you'd need if it was solely from scan data.

Anyway, you'll need about 200 million in data to get to Elite from 2% Pioneer. That can be done in 40-50 systems, if they've got lots of terraformable worlds and you detail scan them ... or several thousand more if you just honk low-value systems.

I've recently hit elite in exploration using just a sidewinder.. it took around 317 million credits to achieve.

Thanks for your reply all, but I still wonder , is there no concrete answer to , for example, x credits gives you x percent towards your rank . X amount of km covered in the SRV etc..

I think FDev reserve the right to tweak progression (as they did with SRV distance and the passengers missions that counted towards exploration rank).

If you are desperate to achieve exploration rank then head to Sag A* and scan every High Metal Content world and Candidates for Terra forming that you discover in a system, Water Worlds too and obviously Earth Likes. Remember to start offset from the bubble by about 750Ly so most of the systems you jump through will be undiscovered, if you avoid an of the nebulas then 99% of the systems you enter will be first time visits.

Make sure you havea Detailed Surface scanner as that dramatically improves the payout on the planets/stars you discover.

I went from a balance of 200MCr to 800Mcr and got Elite Exploration that way, took a month of jumping (approx 1000Ly a night and scanning all the interesting/rewarding planets on the way). On the way there I just scanned any star I got to, and made 90Mcr when I stopped off at Colonia, on the way back I just went for F class stars and made about 515Mcr!

My Elite rank popped up whilst I was handing in the cartogrpahy data, so cant say what my exploration credit value was.

I guess it's just that I seemed to get to Ranger through normal gameplay without travelling very far , but this next jump had been unbelievably slow. Not that I'm desperate to just hit 'elite , I want to make my base at Founder's World and I believe you have to be Elite for the permit. Oh well , grind grind grind...

If you want to speed it up and use external tools(I did it the normal exploration way,but you should have the options)

ED PATHFINDER https://github.com/neotron/EDPathFinder/releases/tag/1.3.0
Go to TOOLS---->>> VALUABLE EXPLORATION ROUTE , set your world filters and click CREATE EXPLORATION ROUTE.
It will look at your journal and open a route full of ELW/WW/Terraformable bodies you HAVEN'T been to.

there are one or 2 others like the profit scanner, but you can google it yourself.
