Release [Explorer's Application] Captain's Log

Is there a way to re-position the overlay once its in the game? I want to move it to the left a little bit but any attempts to drag it are not working. alt/c brings up the main window and I can drag that around easily enough... Am I missing something? I am running borderless.

Also on each load my Trip Jumps always have to re-load? I would think that shouldn't have to happen each time? Am I missing something there too? I have a trip name assigned...

Thanks

There is a little box up in the top right hand corner of the overlay. Grab it with the mouse and you can drag the overlay anywahere you want :)

I don't have a box in the upper right hand corner though...

Well that's odd.

You're saying you don't have that small box in the top right hand corner of the overlay? ...

Here's mine: somehow I'm cut short on the right hand side...

Ah! Okay - so it's scrolled off the screen somewhat. Odd.

Okay, firstly exit CL2

Then if you edit %localappdata%\Captainslog2\captainslog2.ini , in the [Main] section of this text configuration file, you'll see two parameters called

overlay_widget1_x =
overlay_widget1_y =

You'll be wanting to reduce the figure for overlay_widget1_x, so whatever current figure is there, try subtracting say 50-100 from that figure - that'll move the overlay widget to the left.

e.g. if current figure is, say , 365, try setting it to 265. Then start CL2 again. The overlay should have moved a bit to the left, and you should then be able to grab and drag the overlay by way of the box at the top right of the overlay.

In the future, I will add another hold'n'drag square to the top left.

This worked perfectly! it was set at 460, I changed it to 360 and bingo my box is there and all is well :)
Thank You!

Ok I have a question and keep in mind I'm still trying to learn how this all works. So when I start I always fire up CL2 before I log into the game. I then pick my current database and it loads my jumps, but when I continue scanning my system I get no updates or progress until I make a jump or 2.
So am I doing something wrong or do I just need to do this till ED makes a journal file?
Kinda confused.. I feel like the app should be instantly updating. am I missing something?

Hmmmm. I also always load CL2 before clicking on the launcher icon. My current database is usually the last one which was loaded when I last quit out of CL2, so it loads automatically.

CL2 then calculates the trip value, and this runs in the background until complete - depending on the amount of scans in the CL2 DB, and if this has been calculated before (CL2 stores the value in the star system's entry), this usually completes quickly enough.

Then I start the game launcher and launch the game.

It might be worthwhile to wait a couple of minutes before starting the game. But for me, it's usually just a case of start CL2, wait until it's completed its 'housekeeping' after loading the DB, and then load game.

It's not entirely clear from your post at which point you change your Trip DB - it might be the case that you're switching to a different trip DB too quickly, before CL2 has performed 'housekeeping' tasks on the DB it has loaded when starting, in which case, again I'd wait a bit for that to complete. You'll know when CL2 has finished the housekeeping task when the 'calculating trip value' progress bar has disappeared from the Info panel.

Hope this helps!

Both yesterday and today I gave CL2 plenty of time to load and do its thing, both times I still had a few items to scan in the system I'd logged out in.
Yesterday it didn't recognize any of the scans I made but as soon as I jumped it came to life.
Today same as above except I've since made a jump and it's still lifeless.
It's not a very large database either (307 jumps)
A bit frustrating seeing how it just seems to be me.

I haven't had anyone else report this problem. This is the latest version 2.1.6?

You could try starting using CL2 from scratch by renaming the CaptainsLog2 folder located in %localappdata% to something else, then starting CL2, which will create a new folder/configuration, then create a new Trip database and import your logs into that - it'll recreate your jumps and scan data. If that works, then there might have been something screwy going on with your 'old' GALAXY.db database.

So here's what I'm getting today:
I fired up CL2 and gave it time to load my trip ect.
Logged into the game and all was running fine. I needed to log off for a bit so I did but I kept CL2 running.
My last system was a single star system with some nice planets.
I logged back into the game and made a short jump. CL2 is still displaying my previous system. So I scan the star in front of me. CL2 doesn't register the scan. This system has just a single star in it.
I jump again. Now CL2 comes to life and all seems back to normal.
However the previous system with the single star is not counted in my jump list, its showing as part of my system with the nice planets.
In that jump its showing both stars in the star box with different system names. Its like that single star jump never happened.

I tried the fresh install but I tried for hours to get my screenshots and imgur to work to no avail, so I went back to my previous install which got me back up with screenshots and imgur straight away.

Edit to add: I was able to reproduce this (I had to log out of ED to post my snip) and the same thing happened again.
So it looks like my issue is when I log in / out of ED.
What do you think Genar?

maybe I'm just cursed lol

I'll see if I can replicate this one - looks like..... a bug! :)

Generally I just exit out of CL2 when not playing the game, which is possibly why I haven't encountered this one before. Someone might have reported this one before, but I might have forgotten about it as well :p

Genar tonight on a clean start-up I jumped into a new system and all of my scans are being recorded into my previous system. Would a capture of my logging screen help?
I can snip my planet window to show this evidence too.
If others are not seeing this I'm afraid my files might be corrupt.
If so would a uninstall / re-install be warranted?
If this works off of ED's player Journal could I be corrupted there? Am I not getting credit for all this exploring?
Worried now...

It definitely sounds like your DB/CL2 is out of synch to where you actually are. And this really is an old bug that was fixed a while ago. Are you definitely using Captain's Log 2 version 2.1.6?

You're the only person reporting this kind of happening - I can't replicate it and I have a bunch of keen CL2 users and testers on Discord who would report this kind of rather horrible happening in a flash :)

Are you sure the system you're running the game/CL2 on is stable? Are you still running an older version of EDD?

Which version of Windows are you using?
Version of CL2?
How much RAM do you have?
Hard disk space?

Do you start CL2 before running the game?

Try what I suggested earlier (Exit game. Exit CL2. Remove old CL2 folder in %localappdata%. Restart CL2. Configure. Create new trip DB. Import Journal files. Start game.)

Some good practises to run CL2 are: Starting CL2 before the game. Exiting CL2 after you exit the game.

Again, I have CL2 users who also use EDD at the same time without problems, and sometimes when people are having problems, it turned out it was a problem with their system rather than with the program. I'm not sarying this is the case with your system, but, right now I would be suspecting that to be the case.

I suspect it might be my system too. I have stability issues with EDD too.
yes I'm running 2.1.6
16 gb ram
windows 7 pro
hard disk almost empty.
EDD is a slightly older version
CL2 runs 1st

what can I do to see what may be wrong with my system? I've scanned with Microsoft security essentials & malwarebytes and nothing comes up.

I landed at a distant asteroid base and my data is there for selling so that's a relief. (didn't sell it; that would go against my RP)

It's clearly only on log in. once I make a jump or 2 it's smooth sailing. all data is accurate once things sync up.
its not killing me, the data is there its just not going where it should.
I really don't want to try the new re-boot thing. I tried that and I lost all ability to screenshot & imgur. and I don't know why... I followed all the steps & had all the right buttons set. but nothing worked.
I finally went back to the old file and screens & imgur worked as before.

So my need is what can i do to see what might be amiss
should I get windows 10?

Well, we're now into PC Support territory here, in which case perhaps it's time to take your system down to your nearest PC support centre, as it looks to me like you don't have an awful lot of knowledge about PC's/Operating systems - please don't take that personally :)

I'm only willing to give support on direct Captain's Log issues if there's some kind of obvious bug in that. If there's a problem which looks more than likely to do with the system the application is running on, then it's on the system owner to verify that their PC isn't at fault. I think that's a reasonable stance to take.

Again, I'm not ruling out the possibility of there being a bug in CL2, but to me I genuinely believe that your problem leans more towards having system problems and my advice is to let some PC system professional examine your PC for potential problems.

Thanks that's probably my best bet to have a pro check it over.
Strangely enough I fired it up today and its working flawlessly; although I haven't logged out of ED.

I did see a funny thing though. The icon came up for J3 premium fsd jump but there were no planets with Germanium. That has me perplexed, I could have sworn for need Germanium for premium?

On the main window (press ALT-C to bring up) click on any of the available icons indicated in the Info Panel and it'll tell you which planets have the relevant materials.

Nice feature and thanks for the tip! But alas there's no Germanium listed.

Good grief never mind J3 doesn't take germanium. I'm an idiot.
