PSA : Beta 2.1 / 1.6

The current version(s) of Captain's Log will not register any jumps from the 2.1 / 1.6 Betas.


EDIT: The reason for this is that the netlog line denoting a jump has changed format. It also now includes the galaxy map coordinates of the system :)

I will produce a new WIP package which will do so for those - and also maintain backwards compatibility for the current 2.0 / 1.5 versions of the game.

Expect this to happen Soon™

Hi Cmdr GH, not sure if its already been asked in the last 50 odd pages but... do you or any of the other thread readers know if am I able to take the Captain's Log data export and get it into any form of map? I've a quite large DB (18182 systems and rising) and it would be nice to be able to plot these graphically....

Hi there,

Mapping is done via the ever-increasingly-awesome EDDiscovery, which works differently from Captain's Log.

EDD you have to do something called trilateration - basically you enter the galaxy map coordinates of a system in the jump list, then you either have already known systems nearby (which other people have already trilaterated, or you put in distances between that system and other systems. Due to lots of clever maths, you can then extrapolate those positions into a 3D map - which EDD has. They're clever folks those EDD guys :)

Captain's Log, however, was written partly because I couldn't be bothered with all that trilat stuff, and because I wanted something which could record the system bodies you find within each system, as well as take system and jump notes.

With the upcoming 2.1/1.6 release of the game, FDEV have very awesomely included the system coordinates for each system you jump into. Now, I know for sure that's going to help EDD immensely - no more need for manual trilateration.

I'm more than likely going to be adding support in Captain's Log for this as well - because why not? :)

So, this would mean Captain's Log also would/should have support for EDSM.

Basically, all that was a long way to say that no - you cannot produce a map of the Captain's Log data. Yet.

Thanks Cmdr - keep up your great work! May get round to using EDD one day but no desire to add additional work to my travels (one of the reasons I like using CL, sits there in the background merrily logging jumps but I can add notes or system info as and when I feel the need).

Clever folks those CL devs ;)

Cheers Cmdr, may be forced to use a proxy if it stays down for long :(.

Have opened another thread alerting other VM users of issue and will post update there if / when VM extract digit. Appears they've done this before after accidently blocklisting entire imgur site..

Switch off the imgur feature on CL.

If you can't do that due to CL not coping, switch it off manually in the CL configuration file located at %LOCALAPPDATA%\CaptainsLog\

The Config file is called captainslog.ini

Edit that with Notepad (you should be able to just double-click on that file and that'll start Notepad)

Change imgur_uploads_enabled = True to imgur_uploads_enabled = False

Save

Restart CL.

Whenever your ISP fixes their DNS, you can toggle imgur back on using the GUI as normal.

Mine is already set to False and I get an error on starting CL.

What would be super-helpful, would be telling me what the error is - either by words or by taking a snapshot of the error window :)

Just telling me "there's an error", isn't enough information :p

Not a DNS issue - problem was with Virgin Media and routing or perhaps their kill list.

Either way, resolved now.....

New Release : Captain's Log 1.4.0 "Zero Gravitas"

v1.4.0 ("Zero Gravitas")

This is a Bugfix, Enhancement and New Feature release.

Changelog:

Main
- CHANGE : No longer checks or edits your AppConfig.xml file - this is no longer required as FDEV have very kindly enabled jump notifications in the default logging level - thanks FDEV!

- IMPORTANT : Log Parser altered to be able to parse the new 2.1 netlog format.

- ENHANCEMENT : Database loading method changed; Initial loading is MUCH faster. Star icons are loaded in a background thread/process, then statistics are built in a background process.

- ENHANCEMENT : Overlay Mode window can now be positioned. Position is saved. Drag the Overlay Mode window by clicking and dragging the Current Database Name label located at the bottom left of the main window.

- COSMETIC : made various borders thinner - improves appearance somewhat.

I just installed 1.4 and all I can say is, great job - it loads an 8000 system database in a matter of seconds rather than minutes. Thanks for the update!
