Release [Explorer's Application] Captain's Log

Having small problem and hoping someone can please offer some help. Its with the overlay - it doesnt show up in game, it overlays things like chrome that I am using right now. If I manage to get a windows menu to display in game the CL2 overlay also shows up. I cant seem to find the answer after searching the thread, unless I am being blind and missed it. Its windows 10 I am using along with latest nvidia drivers for gtx 1080.

CL2 knows the game is running as the main cl2 windows says so and is parsing logs, also alt-c pulls up the main window and takes me out of game as expected.

Thanks for any help :)

E: D runs in windowed fullscreen mode?

Yep - looks like you're not running the game in Borderless Window mode. When running in fullscreen mode, the game basically hijacks the screen. The only way to get the overlay on top is to run the game in Borderless mode.

Thanks will give it a try tonight. I am pretty sure I am indeed running it as full screen.

Edit: Thank you for the assistance, it works perfectly.

I'll try to investigate what's happening. It sounds like from the description, that CL isn't picking up on a new journal log being created when the game is started - what should happen is that upon starting up the app, CL should get the last journal entry - if you then start the game and a new journal log is created, CL should detect that and start using the new journal log.

If that isn't happening for some reason, then CL will still be looking at the last journal log, which would exhibit the behaviour being reported.

The trouble is, seeing as that has never happened on my PC, that's going to be a tough one for me to investigate.

I have had the same thing happening to me twice.

If I start a new DB and scan all journals it will pick it up.

After moving all old journals to a backup folder and restarting Elite then starting captains log it continued logging, but of course missed that I had jumped merging the last sessions star system with the current one. Which is logical as I had moved the journal containing the jump away.

It seems a workaround is quitting both programs, then starting first ED, getting into system and then starting CL2.

Maybe a racing condition?

Might be possible to check for new logs and import them using the available information:
Date of last entry in current log
Current date
Filenames of journals in ED log folder

In the info panel for j1-3 a1-3 icons what is the difference between red and green icons?
I assumed red meant all the mats could be found in the system but on different planets, and green meant all mats for one item could all be found on the same planet.
After checking this though that does not seem to be the case, so what is the difference between red and green?

It's just to distinguish between the different 'grades' of Jumponium or AFMU, really. Do note that this indication of mats available in one system is really just the beginnings of an idea - a prototype.

I look forward to what the future holds then! Fantastic program by the way, really wish I had it on my trip to Sag A, so many tagged BH etc and I have no idea of where they are now...

Not sure if it is anything to worry about, but Avast AV is blocking your download link.

I'm not worried about that - that's Avast's and the users of Avast's problem, not mine. I ensure that CL2's installation program and resultant program files don't have viruses - and the installer is signed with my class II code signing cert as well. That's about as many steps I personally can take. :)

Sounds like you are doing your part.

I am also waiting for Avast to get back to me..

To let you know, I have successfully reported your file as a probable false positive to Avast.

Not sure what will happen next.
Right now I am here.. >>> https://www.starmessagesoftware.com/faq-page/what-is-avast-drep-infection << trying to decide what my next step will be.

=================================

Downloaded it to a linux machine and to an android device and then moved it to my game machine.
Both times when I tried to run it I got an error that the setup files are corrupted.

On a cursory research, it seems that Avast has a list of websites which it either clears or not according to 3 main criteria, which are listed on that URL you gave. So basically I don't think I'll ever clear their criteria.

You can check my site's safety via Google Safebrowser - just type the captainslog.scarygliders.net url into it - it's clean. You can whitelist the site from your PC.

Also, it seems someone uploaded my installer for CL2 to Virusttotal's online file checker, and it's also clean : https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/...6778d96d27cc739dea3113a6e7465dadad3/analysis/

I don't know what else I can do or say, really ;)

Basically, file under "yet another reason not to use Avast". Quite shocked that it is giving false positives not because of any fingerprint but because not enough Avast users have downloaded the software in question. That's just .

In my opinion, all these anti-virus products are nothing more than bloatware ran by self-interested companies who stir up drama and scares in order to justify their existence.

Windows Defender is perfectly adequate, plus not browsing dodgy websites, plus being extremely cautious with downloaded programs, data, and documents, equals a delightfully virus-free computing life. :)

I didn't say it wasn't clean. I said that Windows said the file was corrupted when I downloaded it to other devices, moved it to the game machine and tried to run it.

Both times Avast scanned it and said it was not dangerous so don't be blaming Avast.

At present I don't think there is anything wrong with the file other than it is on little used domain and it doesn't get downloaded very often.

I just have to figure out how to disable the "reputation checker" in Avast (and also maybe something in Chrome since Chrome also gave me a warning about "network" insecurity, again probably because of the little used domain.) and download it directly to the game machine.

Just looked at the latest comparisons between WD for W10, (I am on W7) and Avast and a couple others. Avast actually caught more things than WD and had fewer false positives and Avast scans in about half the time. WD uses less system resources so it scored higher. Reading the report, I would have scored them tied, but the uber techies are real addicted to system performance so they weighted that higher.

I like the Avast reputation checker most of the time. Not because I go to dodgy places, but because even supposedly reputable news sites can and do get hijacked and Avast users flag it faster than MS can get a new version of WD released.

File corruption can occur in many different ways - an incomplete download being one of them, or some problem with your internet connection - happens a lot.

As for Avast - well I'm one of those techies - been in the IT industry under many different guises for many decades. I get a feel for what's 'good', 'bad', or simply 'adequate', and I'm just saying that in my somewhat experienced opinion, that all these antivirus products are more to do with psychological well-being and making one feel safe, and that again in my somewhat experienced opinion, Windows Defender is adequate, as long as one takes additional precautions. It's not perfect of course, and excrement can and does happen.

I've no idea why Chrome would be flagging up some sort of 'network' insecurity - my site is HTTPS-only, and uses a certificate which expires every 3 months - currently it's well within its validity period. Maybe it's talking about something else?

Well, I have never had the file corruption happen repeatedly before using three different ISP's and two different devices on two different OS's.

It long ago became my habit that when I wanted to download something big whenever possible, I would book mark the location and wait until I was in town, find some free wifi and download it to my Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 international version with full phone functionality. Bring it home and transfer the file to the appropriate machine and run it. That has NEVER failed before.

In the EDD thread and on another thread I have lamented my home internet service whoa's.

Press Alt-C to make it display the detailed view when you are displaying the overlay and again to make it go away and return to the game.
