Explorers - Do you look after your FSD?

Question for everyone, but specifically all you explorers out there in the black:

Do you keep your FSD in good condition?

Specifically keeping the % high, as close too 100% at all times using:
  • AFMS
  • Careful handling
  • Fleet Carrier repairs
OR - do you let it degrade down to where it's failing a lot before repairing?

Thanks!

If im off solo i always have an AFMU and although its rare i make a mistake (lets not talk about that 9G visitor beacon!!) i usually keep the FSD at 100%
Generally though if im exploring for a long period of time i take out the FC as a base and stay within 2K LY of it (i can keep the oxygen going for a few carrier jumps for a rescue!)

Never seen an issue with duff modules over long hauls, never noticed any downgrade to be honest as my ships pretty tough and fast and generally I look after it so don’t tend to get into many scrapes where modules degraded to a point where it’s detrimental.

I don't have a fleet carrier, but I do carry an AMFS as well as a decontamination limpit controller which doubles as Hull repair (along with five limpets for hull repair if necessary). I do try to keep everything as damage free as possible.

I bag it up, every time I use it...

I never let it get below 90%. It takes seconds to drop out of supercruise, stop and power down to run an AFMU cycle. When you're 30,000 LY from civilisation and your FSD is the only way to get home, you bet I take care of it. As for careful handling, the only time it ever takes damage is when neutron boosting.

Thanks all, this is great, If you could ask your friends to post here too that would be great. I'm looking to get a feel for average FSD 'health' so the more the merrier. Seems like everyone is pretty good at keeping it in good conidiation so far :)

Good insight, this feels like maybe how most people feel about it? I defo do!

Don't over analyse this, just keep it above 80% to avoid malfunctions.

Thanks for the comment :) I'm doing some research into the condition of FSD units across the community, explorers use their FSD away from easy-repair more than anyone in the bubble, and rely on it more, so it's the wonderful explorer community is the obvious place to do this research!

Overanalysing is my jam

I've been out on exploration runs using neutron stars for boosts long enough to need to synthesise ammo for a 3A AFMU. There is no need to repair until you drop below 80%, so I don't unless I have landed on a planet for some reason. I don't want to waste time dropping out of supercruise to do repairs unless it's needed.
I guess that means my FSD health averages at 90%.
If I'm calling at stations I always repair everything everytinme on whatever ship I'm flying.

Keep it in good working order - at or above 80% via AFMU on deep space runs. I have admittedly experimented with mis-jumps. It is possible in supercruise but you cannot cut power to the module whilst in Witchspace. Emergency drops similarly only work in supercruise and yes you can manually force an emergency drop on your own.

Usually the plan is that the first warning message (drop below 80%) I will repair at my next fuel star.

But sometimes I am lazy and end up getting it down to 5% before I finally repair 😬

It won't drop you out of supercruise until it hits 0% but the likelihood of FSD errors will increase when trying to initiate a jump, so probably I end up wasting more time procrastinating than just repairing in the first place.
