I really wonder what "some defensive capability" should look like, taking down a DBX in a T-6 is not really fun after the first 15 minutes
I expect something on Galnet about an exploration vessel with weird scorchmarks drifting into a borderworld outpost or something similarly foreboding before explorers will really have to worry.
CMDR's, I was 18kLY out exploring out in the Norma arm in my un-armed ASPx when I caught the first 'countdown to engineers' podcast. In it, I'm sure I heard Mike Brookes say 'I wouldn't recommend exploring without being able to defend yourself'. Now, when MB makes a statement like that I expect it wont be anything trivial !!
For those (explorer) commanders running no weapons and zero/minimal shielding and choosing to not return before 2.1 drops - I wish you luck.

I can't find the thread to quote it, but the dangers being referred to was part of a dev release somewhere around here.
They've stated that exploration is going to become more, well, dangerous; they want to encourage explorers to actually consider their defensive ability, and make it less viable to pilot exploration ships that are stripped down to the very bare essentials.
