Explorers: (how) do you keep track of systems you've visited?

How do you get the 2 decimal places for the galactic coordinates z993126?

I use EDDiscovery to parse my netlog file for the list of systems I fly through.
I also keep a handwritten list of the travel distance for each jump.
Copypasta the output of EDD into my Drive Sheet, invert the order, and append it to the end of my list.
Finally I add the travel distances that I wrote down earlier, SUM function the total for the day, and add the distance to Sol if I remember.

Funnily enough I do exactly the same, even down to the brackets around the number of bodies in the system.

Was at HR 1950 less than an hour ago...

...and if you're wondering what the "Man in the Nebula" note is all about, it's this:

I grab the coordinates from my Systems sheet, which is a combination of mostly Steve Hodge's data and some others I've been able to find with high-definition coordinates...the ones I've entered myself are approximations cross-referenced by distance calculated from my 'home' system.

I have just keep a small note book where I quickly write down notes of places, things or systems I don't wish to forget.

But thanks to this post I see a few really neat programs that I'm currently checking out! :D

Great at getting lost, not so good with keeping records LoL

I have developed my own tool (just php + sql DB) to keep track on explored systems (tracking separate stations, stars and planets) . However it willbe nice if FD implement some filter in galaxy map for fully/partially searched systems

I'm using Slopie's tool for the auto flight log feature. It bugs out and crashes a lot from commodity aren't sync errors (even when I'm not using that). Updating it occasionally wipes my record, so if you could explain how your way works, I'd be grateful.

You don't need the tool for that, your whole travel history is in the netLogs, just parse lines with "cruising".

I'm with Zvayna, I don't really keep track. Occasionally I'll write the name of a star system I come across that interests me (like ones with black holes). Otherwise, I just stay away from systems without buy-able system data when I'm exploring. If you really want to keep track, though, I'd suggest writing it down or using a word processor (or maybe even excel). Way back when I played Starflight I used paper and pencil, but now I'm older and don't care as much :)

I have set up a spreadsheet on a small Eee PC. It started out as a way of tracking what I had been trading and has slowly evolved into a pilots log. What I like about a spread sheet is text cells will auto fill if there has been a similar entry above in the same column - saves my poor worn two fingers. Plus there is now a lookup table of every system visited and port docked at, to save typing. It is very much a work in progress and think it would be better as a database. On a separate sheet I record data about each system/port I visit, nothing too detailed just names, alliances and what facilities offered at each dock. I was recording distances to neighbouring systems but this becoming cumbersome as my jump capability increased. So when I began using 'TradeDangerous' I have not needed to bother with this.

Can't see what you're seeing on the galmap

if it's out in the deep dark and has a white system icon on the galmap then I know I've been there
I've been staring at the galaxy map for a while now, but I'm not seeing what you described. Can you provide any additional clues? Thanks!

I too don't keep track, unless there is something very interessting about the system then I take a screenshot of the System Map.

Not at all.

Still waiting for some appropriate Galaxy Map Filters to be implemented for Explorers

I don't, because I've visited over 5000 systems. I'm playing a video game, not maintaining a data archive. The fact that Frontier maintains a data archive yet shares as little of it as absolutely possible with the players who created the data is a sore point for me.

Bookmarks, catalogs, notes and statistics. You can't be an Explorer without them Frontier.

Edit: Annnnd I didn't realize that this thread is 10 months old.

Thanks Mr. Necro for pointing out that this fundamental design problem has persisted for a YEAR.
