Explorers - How generous are you?

For me, the clue is in the name - Exploration.

...

so I'm starting to chose what I'm scanning now & leaving more unscanned.

OMG The sky is falling. :O

I started off scanning everything. Then went to scanning only high value bodies. One day I came across a system where most of the bodies had been scanned by different commanders, leaving some undiscovered planets for others.
Nice, I thought. [yesnod] Since that day I have done the same. Left my marker on my way to somewhere else.

I usually scan the main star (unless in a hurry to get somewhere)and scan every WW, ELW, AW I also check out interesting ringed planets (I like big rings and I can not lie). Never though about being "generous" and leaving planets to scan for other. Depending on the system location, it's likely nobody will ever visit it again.

However, I found a system (well actually two) near BP that had 4-5 bodies discovered by different CMDRs. So I scanned an undiscovered rock, and left the rest alone...that felt good. :)

This guy knows what I mean :D

basically I do scanning a system I step in in detail
but I dont scan the belts as they do not pay nothing.
and in regular I will scan all planets and moons as long
as they are in 1ld = 86400 ls range.
Sometime I skip even closer bodies like a single sun 72000 ls away.
but sometime I go beyond it if it seems intresting enough.

Regards,
Miklos

I'm lazy, rather than generous, if i cant be bothered then i wont scan it. However, i'm only 21000Lys out , 7000Lys south west ish from Sag A*, and i think i've only found 1 tagged system in the last 2 to 3000 Lys. Due to this, i cant really see the requirement to leave some for others. there's still plenty of empty space in er...space...:D

Will you take time to scan everything in this system? Or will you leave some of them for Commanders who may visit this system at a later date?
...

Out in the black I vary between full on compulsive, H/S/J to get somewhere I'm going, cherry picking, and anything in between.

Around and in the bubble though doing the CG of late I've come across quite a few systems .. well one for example ..

A system composed of an M-class and 6 Gas giants, each surrounded by many icy moons.
The star and the gas giants all claimed by the same player BUT the first 3 moons of the first gas giant were claimed by three different explorers.
It occurred to me this was like a scratching post, a graffiti board that said 'I was here'.
I claimed the fourth moon of the first giant and moved on.

I think this is a cool thing to do, I hope it catches on.
I'll be keeping it in mind from now on.

Yeah, I love seeing systems like that and I do just the same - tag a moon and move on.

If the system is small enough and/or interesting enough then I'll scan everything. However, if I encounter a system where people have been following the 'scan one object and move on' rule of thumb then I'll play along with that.

Since reaching Elite in exploration I've found that I've gotten way too lazy for scanning stuff.

One of the favourite things to find are Earth-likes and Ammonia worlds though. If I find an Earth-like my policy is to perform a complete scan of everything in it - although that depends if I'm on a sprint-run as well.

It boils down to what I can be bothered doing at the time, and not down to "generosity", as that implies I care about what other explorers are doing ;)

If I'm in the mood for it, not in a rush to go anywhere and if the system is not too big, but containing valuable planets and is not too large - then chances are higher for me to scan everything. If not...maybe the star, but that's it. If any gas-giants are in range - fine, these too. Earth-like and water-worlds go without saying.

For the current CG most of the time I didn't even look at the system map, I just "honked" and went on to the next system. As I've stayed less than 50ly from the bubble chances to get into an undiscovered system where pretty slim anyway.

However, in the past I stumbled over systems which I call to myself "Kilroy-was-here-systems". Usually these are not-too interesting systems (e.g. L- or M-star, icy bodies) without any gas giants/earth-likes/waterworlds. Usually it looks like this: star got tagged by Cmdr A, the first planet by explorer B, second planet by explorer C, etc.. Then I join the fun and tag the next planet, regardless what it is (ice, metallic, etc.).

Not that anyone is ever going to come across any of the systems I'm around right now, but if they do, they may think: this Alad Insane character sure loves rocky and icy balls. What a pillock!

For a couple of hundred systems I have been checking out small moons, since they've got the most interesting geography. I go to system map, select the one I'm interested in and when I get close the scan will run of course. If I think about it I'll first select the Gas Giant or parent it's orbiting.

In my case they'll be thinking "Why did GreyAreaUK scan the planets but not the star?"

And the answer is:because CMDR GreyAreaUK is an idiot. That's why.

Yeah those tiny rocks/ice balls are pretty awesome. The >400km ones are crazy.

I'll scan stars, metal rich planets, high metal planets and type II gas giants if they're in sensible range. I'll always go for anything looking like an Earthlike. I focus on credits per hour of play. I'm not fussed about leaving anything for other players, if they want tags they can go into the black themselves. Having said that, I usually leave rockballs and snowballs alone.

Cheers, Phos.

At the beginning of my exploration career, I used to scan literally everything. Heck, even more than that - I was flying near planets in hope that I would spot something extraordinary down there (like alien megastructures). These days I am rarely taking out my Asp any more and when I do, I'll scan just what appears to be ELW, water world or terraformable planet. I became generous, so to speak :)

It depends where I am in my current journey, by that I tend to scan everything on my way out (big jumps) until I get to the place I want to then scan all the systems around. On my way home it is jump, scoop and run...

Generous? Exploring is the loneliest, least social aspect of the game... and there's plenty to explore for everyone. I scan what's interesting to scan. I leave the crumbs for anyone mad enough to spend time on scanning low value, common type balls of ice or stone.

The main star always, regardless what it is, and any star that's within my scanner's reach without me traveling towards it, initially. Then it's anything of interest to me, WW, ELW, BH, neutron stars are obvious. HMC if they look like they could be terraformable. Herbig stars if they are not stupidly far away from the main star. Rocky worlds tend to be right next to their stars, so I'll scan those if it means me not having to travel to get them. Gas giants if they are within 2kls. I don't bother with snowballs.

I'm in this trip to make rank and money. And I'm not going to do that if I don't scan anything. But I'm also in a slight time crunch as I'm trying to get to SagA and back before Horizons launches on the Xbox One. Besides, there is a real possibility that the majority of the systems I'm scanning will never be visited again. That part really blows my mind.

Well it is a bit weird to be 'generous'
Don't get me wrong, I get what you are saying.

But with billions upon billions of stars out there.......is it even relevant to leave something behind? what is the chance of someone finding the start you found once you are beyond a certain range from civilized space?
