Exploring in a dropship !!!!

You can make a 4D PDU work, with an engine focused roll. It's only a couple tons you're saving though. This is a hard ship to shave weight off for jump range. The "modable" modules that other ships gain a lot using lightweight dittos of doesn't do much on this ship. They're generally already small and the hull can unfortunately not be fixed. :D
I would replace your 4D reinforcement packages with 2x 1D module reinforcements. They're as useful for what you use them for, to protect against the odd heat damage incidents. You won't get too many of those as long as you don't fall asleep inside a white dwarf.
Your power plant is way too big! With a bit of power management and adjustments, you can use anything as small as a 2A plant with a grade 1 overcharge. The grade 1 overcharged power plant is the explorer's best friend. It's "cheap" to roll and with the right secondary effects it can be as cool or even cooler than a stock power plant, with a big oomph boost. As an explorer, unused power on your plant is good, it means it'll run cooler in super cruise, which is one of the most important aims when your days consists of arriving at and scooping star after star. This is also a reason I use low power shield mods on my ships (though powering off the shield while you're travelling is of course even better, it's not doing anything for you when you're travelling other than generating heat).
This is what I'd tweak your build to:

Nice. I'll be looking into the mods to setup in the near future as currently I mod usually for QOL stuff rather than a specific task. Nice. Thanks

you can get it to work with a 3D PDU if you get a decent grade 3 roll on engine focused, you could also go with a 2A PP if you juggle some power priorities without engineering it, so engineering it will give you even more power. I personally would ditch the heat syncs and mining laser too and also one srv, but that's me

I would also drop that other amfu too, and just refill the 5A if you run out. if the 5A is beyond repair your dead anyway.

but each to their own you know..

Well I get 26.61lyr fully fuelled in my explorer setup. I'm happy with that. I'll have a play with some of the suggestions you guys have put forward just to see how much range I can squeeze out of the old FDS at some point though :)

Minor note about going with minimal PDs: if you decide to mod a PD that's just barely boost-capable, then you'll have to keep in mind that you'll only be able to boost every once in a blue moon. (Since you'll be waiting quite a lot for the engine cap to recharge enough for another boost.) Such boosts would only be useful for an emergency maneuver if the ground is coming up too fast, but not really for extended travel (planetside) nor running away from something.

I explored in a Dropship before there were even additional fuel tanks, so regular scooping was required. These days with FSD engineering, additional fuel tanks, and other stuff, well, not much advice required. Just enjoy the sights.

Yeah, I used to sometimes carry an extra fuel tank on my exploration Vulture there for a bit, but now with being able to plot to scoopable stars, I've never found a need to bother with it. Three jumps 'til empty is more than enough for me. I dare say it is dumbing down the game a bit, or maybe dumbing me down... LOL But hey, I'm not really complaining about it.
