Exploring in a Viper MK IV?

I'm finding the Viper MK IV as ship that is hard to let go of recently.

It is just as flexible as the Cobra MK II, nice single seat central cockpit and better weapon placement than Cob MK III (not perfect but better)

Well I was wondering if anyone uses this lovely little ship as an explorer vessel? And if you do what little bits of advice for using one?

Fully fitted for missions and a SRV I get just over 19ly jump range so I'm thinking I should easily get 30+ if I set it up specifically for exploring.

Any experiences?

A few months back, I took my Viper MK IV to Betelgeuse with the sole intention of trying to fly it into the star and get it melted. I failed (mostly gravity + boredom getting the better of me). But the journey there (and back) was enjoyable (and it's quite hard to melt ;) ). It's quite nifty for planetary landings too. From memory, I was doing ~35LY in it - that was without SRV and a little engineering, but by no means maxxed. I was very close to taking it out on a proper journey but I've been slightly spoiled by the jump range of the Asp so decided against it.

If you're happy with 30LY-35LY jump range (which is easily achievable), then it's a decent choice IMO. Plus it looks quite cool in screenshots :)

I took a Viper Mk 1V to Beagle Point on the Distant Worlds Expedition. That was a year ago so no Engineers and I had it mostly A specced & with weapons so only had about 22 LY range. Apart from the range it was pretty good for exploring and great for planetary landings (being small it can easily land in places where larger ships cannot) and also for racing through canyons. With a well engineered loadout giving it decent range I imagine it would be very good now.

I fly Viper MK IV.

This is my ship

Hm, guess the beta link doesn't display my ship well for some reason..

Anyway, it's the highest jump range so far recorded for a Viper MK IV. I don't think I'll change to a different ship any time soon.

You don't really need experience to fly this ship. It turns well, it's easy to land on any planet. It has enough internal slots and it can equip enough weapons.

And the reason to fly it.. yep, it looks good as well.

A friend of mine explores in a Viper Mk IV. It's a pretty solid ship, very similar to the Cobra Mk III in internals, jump range, fuel tankage, etc, and Cobras have been everywhere.

If you like it, then fly it! No reason not to!
