Newcomer / Intro Exploring start point(s)?

This may not be the appropriate forum as I'm not a newcomer - but it seems far more pleasant to ask/reply with genuine questions.
I'm confident with the game/mechanics and have followed the threads.
I play Mobius so no PvP concerns.

My proposed Asp setup is http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=60g,,2-6Q8S7_6u6Q8S8I,52W7TC05U0Ky0Ky2UI2jw[Comments welcome on the setup from they who know more]

My question is ... where do I start?

I'm planning to wander along the arm and spiral into the core (and back via shortest route), but I only want to rekit my Asp right at the start of leaving ... good system(s) to go from?

Also, when people say "I'm 2kLy out" (or whatever), where is that measured from?

Good innit? :)

I'm not a fan of flying unarmed, although I understand the arguments in favor of doing so. For a potentially long trip you'll want to consider how the game might change before you return. This is pretty far towards unlikely but makes a good example: what if you're out there for over a month (not outlandish for a trip to the Core as far as I'm concerned), and while you're on your way back home a new patch drops adding hostile aliens to great swaths of what is currently uninhabited space? While unlikely, the developers do view combat and the risk of death as an integral part of the game.

It's not exactly the same, but I was coming back from my first long distance exploration when 1.1 landed. That release ramped up the frequency and aggression of NPCs on the outskirts considerably. Honestly, I was very glad that my Asp was geared for war. For the record, I play Mobius as well.

As to how to measure distance, I believe that distance from Sol is fairly standard. Personally I find the Federation to be distasteful, so I measure distance from the system I consider to be my base of operations. Once you're measuring your trip in the 1000s of LY your center point won't make much difference.

Unfortunately I can't see you asp set up so can't comment.

I wouldn't go in the direction you said. I'm going that way and you might sell some of my discoveries before I do ;)

I check my distance from my home system as its near the edge of populated space but sometimes check Sol as that's the measurement most people use and everyone understands.

I'll start with your last question.
Such and such a distance out, means from 0:0:0, Sol. Even if you're Empire or Alliance, it just makes things easier.

You can only remit your Asp at the beginning because there are no stations beyond a couple of hundred ly out. You need at a minimum...
A class FSD,
Advanced Discovery Scanner
Detailed Surface Scanner
Fuel scoop, the best and biggest you can afford.

Auto Field Maintenance units are optional and don't take up additional weight.
You want to try to limit all your other modules to D class to save weight, as a lighter ship has further range.

If you have a permit to a shipyard or outfitters with a discount (eg. Founders World permit), use there to buy your ship at a saving.

If you are going to have the over spec power plant, dist, and shield, then you might as well have the weapons. Personally, I would cut them down and get a better scoop.

Take it out for a spin to miai and back to see how you feel

Thanks for the comments. I take the point on weapons - and, after doing the sums, find that loading up with lasers doesn't restrict the jump range much. A-spec'd Asp with teeth still jumps well :) 6D Fuel scoop seems good to me.

My question was - where to start? I'd like to start at a system right on the edge of inhabited space, in the 'current' arm and round about 0 degrees Y, with decent outfitting available.

Got to Baron now so heading off shortly.

Thx

Start where you want. I don't believe there is a single good answer to this particular question. If there were an explorer with a particular favorite "jumping off" point you'd probably want to avoid that, since that would start you out on a course that's more likely to have already been explored. Cut your own path, that's what exploring is all about!
