Newcomer / Intro Exploring

Hey guys. I'm pretty new to the game and I'm currently pricing up different builds for different jobs. Obviously I don't know what I'd like to do yet and I'll probably change my mind a lot, but if I have a go at something I'd like to make a good go at it instead of just dipping my toe in.

I've made up an Adder build for exploring priced at around 2.5mil. I was wondering if any experienced explorers would be able to take a look at it? Is there anything I can ditch? Anything I've missed?

The purpose of the build is to explore while: staying safe; making credits; having fun. I'm under no illusions that exploring is a poor way of earning a living, I'm doing it out of pleasure rather than cash, but I'd at least like to make the most money available from it.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks for reading!

Personally I would ditch the weapons and if you can afford it go for a better power distributor to help with heat.

Not that I've tried it but does the hauler not make a better explorer in terms of jump distance?

Fuel scoop, the best you can afford. Advanced Discovery Scanner and the Detailed Surface Scanner. Weapons aren't really needed but i'd hang onto the shields.

Your link takes me to a sidewinder setup not an Adder as you mention above. EDIT: On my PC it works fine???
A Hauler gets great jump range when setting it up for exploration.
Remember lighter means further, look at D rated modules but go for top FSD and fuel scoop.
Advanced discovery scanner is ideal but an intermediate does you well as long as you just keep pressing the thing as you explore new systems. Detailed Surface Scanner just helps maximise income but not essential first time out if you can't afford it.
You can find Nutters Guide To Exploring which tells you just about everything you need to know (can't link it at the mo as I'm on a new phone), just search in the box at the top of this page for exploration guide our something. EDIT: Here is the link

Fixed it for you.

Seriously, you don't need weapons or shields. Just sell your shield at the last inhabited station on your way out. There is no longer any NPC interaction in the first 500Ly of uninhabited space. That also gives you 4 extra ly jump range. It makes a HUGE difference.

Thanks for the information guys. I've tried this build with a Hauler.

I get an extra 5-6Ly range, better heat management and it's about 200k cheaper. So, thanks for the advice on that! I've upgraded my power distribution, ditched the weapons and point defense, and upgraded my fuel scoop. My only issue is that I don't have a shield generator with this build. Is it worth switching the field maintenance unit for a shield generator? I hear heat is my major concern and shields don't matter much to that, but then again... I do feel safer with a shield.

It depends how far you are going:
Sag A* ? Take the AFMU
Local Tourist Sites ? Take a shield for your docking on return. A small shield will do.

On your first trip out, dont try to make the far rim, just do some local Nebula and come back. The extra cash will help, the extra experience is invaluable

Looks nice.
Personally I would loose the FMU and add the smallest 2D Shield Gen. It helps if you have a bumpy landing on the way back!

Also worth noting that, if you have the nerve for it and you are allegiance sensitive, selling the exploration data builds up rep with the system allegiance/faction you sell it to so you can save it for the system you may prefer to call home. :)

This is such a hard decision... It's a toss up between damaging my FSD leading to be being stranded in deep space, or smashing into a station wall trying to dock when I arrive back. Touch wood... I haven't messed up a landing/docking yet, but there is always the possibility...

My worry is, because I'm not used to using a Fuel Scoop, that I'll burn out some essential hyperspace component while trying to refuel. Then, without repair, I'll be stranded. Maybe it's worth sacrificing the extra few Lys jump range and taking the Adder to have both. Decisions decisions...

Edit: This Adder.

When you have been out for 2 weeks, your docking skills WILL be rusty, but its a tiny Hauler, how hard can it be ?
You WILL fry your components sooner or later, everyone does. As a novice, I expect it to be the former

In that case Dommarraa, referring the my most recent post, is it worth going with my new Adder build and forgetting about the Hauler?

Personally I would never ditch my shields. Just one mishap, be it an interdiction or messing up a station approach and you can say goodbye to your ship and possibly several days/weeks worth of valuable survey data, all for the sake of saving a tiny bit of jump distance. Speaking from experience, approaching the first station you've seen in a trip of several thousand light years can be tricky. Your piloting skills will be rusty after doing nothing but whizz around in supercruize for several days/weeks.

I would go with a small shielded ship of any type (no AFMU) and do some local exploring. When you are done, you will know what you want to do next. You will probably be pondering a Cobra.

Edit: This Adder.

It is a tough decision as it is the unknown that is scary.
If you mess up fuel scooping it could well end up being fatal anyway ;)
For the first time out my suggestion is - go for the comfort of the adder so you are confident, pick a destination in unexplored space that is a good few hundred LY's away and then circumnavigate around known space rather than going straight out further (using economy plotting to grab the most systems). If anything nasty happens you can max out your jumps and get back to a station in 5/6/7 jumps.

Thanks man! Sounds good. How's my Adder build? Obviously there is no one-size-fits-all, but do you think I'll have any issues with it?

Now all I have to do is save up the 2.5-2.6mil + Insurance.

One more thing to consider if it should be an Adder or a Hauler: The view from the cockpit. I think the view in the Adder is very bad. I don't know how it is in a Hauler.

Yeah I've heard it can be bad at first but it's cool once you get used to it. Regardless of what I do I think the Adder will be a link in the chain at some point so I'll have to deal with it eventually. Cheers anyway man!

Risking a hailstorm of response with this but....
If you do have some cash/asset you can use to get your Adder, but set up something along the lines of below to go to a Resource Extraction Site and bounty hunt.
You can have your 2-3mill Creds in 6-7 hours.
KWS any wanted ships for added credits and when you come up against the bigger/badder wanted ships 'condas/pythons/dropships, etc, scan them then hang around like a bad smell until the local authority ships have their shields down and they are on the ropes then sneak in for the bounty at the end.
Be careful not to fly into any rocks!!!
