External view with target reticule

In 2019 you get cars which give you a 3rd person (top down) perspective to help with manoeuvring, and simulators that allow you to
pretend to be inside a space ship. As well as some pretty great AI image processing. It's not hard to imagine that in 1000 years a few external cameras and a helmet would be able to give you a third person view from within the cockpit. I'd actually be more surprised if there were a 21st century dashboard tbh.

Whether this enhances the gameplay, or is true to the 80s original, is another matter...

If I remember correctly, Frontier: First Encounters had a module you could fit that enabled a third-person view with a sort of en-biggened scanner surrounding your ship. Combat Computer, I think.

This suggestion sounds a bit like the multi-crew gunner view as previously mentioned in this thread, but fixed behind the ship.

A fine addition to the language, commander. So much better than 'make more bigly'.:giggle:

I don't want to remove my hands from a flight stick because someone wants a third-person Easy mode and for me to win I have to drop to their level. Sorry, laziness is not a skill.
This along with your other statements befiddles me somewhat.
As to my knowledge it's a known fact that mouse+KB is the way to do combat, as precision etc. outshines HOTAS by a large margin. So how come you don't complain about that as well. That for sure was not how we flew back in the 80's.
All he asks for is something he would like, if you disapprove, stick in your cockpit with your HOTAS, and suffer whatever balance issues that gives (which surely is minor compared to many other aspects of the games issues anyhow - cough engineers - FSD formula - whole modular system...).

EDIT: For balance it could be a module (external one at that) as Sylow said. Would open up something more on the tactical front to think about.

That is true, I am strictly for banning al mice

especially around the cockpit or at least until we get cockpit cats

Definitely don't want to go down the third person view for combat.
I agree. But I would like to see a pop up in the HUD with a rear facing camera (and a downward facing camera). What I suggest is a HUD display (pick a spot, lower left, right, ...) so you can see an image sufficient to help with situational awareness or scanning a planet's surface. We have cars today with these features.
