F-Devs commitment to VR - Will they let it die???

Hey guys,

I am just curious, has anyone of you ever heard what F-Dev is thinking about VR? Are they gonna support it further?

The decision to make Odyssey with just a flat screen in VR is already not a good sign for VR but I wonder if they ever communicated anything about what they are planing for VR. Some issue reports for VR are pretty old and most of the recent bugs seem to stay with VR players as well.

In the last year, they brought a lot of new stuff but VR was never mentioned even once in their videos.

It seems like they are done with the whole feature and not willing to support it anymore and just let it drop under the table.

Anyone has heard something different or the same worries?

Last official word (that I know of) was Arthur’s statement that VR wouldn’t be brought to on-foot until it would match the quality of the cockpit experience - and there was a message from Sally (before she left) that they’d discussed virtual flatscreen options at an evening meal thing.

Nothing has ever come of those and there hasn’t been any other statements, but VR bug fixes continue to be included in new releases even if they are not always included in the patch notes. The most recent old bug fix (as in, not something recently introduced like the Power Play strategic map crash or the one-eye orbital lines) was the Holo-Me positioning problem, which had been around for a few years, sorta almost fixed in Update 9 but not quite, then properly fixed in Update 19.

The VR bug list has a “Closed Reports” section under a spoiler tab, if you want to see what FDev have done since Odyssey’s release.

I'm a heavy VR CMDR, and I haven't heard anything. Support was dropped years ago. Horizons was the "Golden Age" for VR gameplay. They need a new Engine.

The VR that we have is what we get - I was hoping for more, but gave up years ago. It is a shame, I never wanted roomscale or anything, just not the current jarring solution with the small floating screen on grey background (I have a Steam virtual screen for that, that does it better). I can play in VR on foot as long as I don't need to interact with anything - so close, and still out of reach.

I just wish we would an option to quickly switch between VR and screen without going to the menu and changing settings. It was said in Odyssey Beta that something similar would be coming, but again, plans change. Just like the plan to have a game built from the ground for VR.

I still have a blast flying through space, it is still my most played game (VR or other) in the last 10 years - I just spend less time (and money) on it than I would otherwise

I only play in VR.

When I tried with the Quest 1, it didnt keep my attention. It looked amazing for the first 10 sessions, then the visual fidelity got to me and I put down Elite entirely.

YEARS later and Quest 3, and a new PC and I'm back just before December and its been smooth sailing and amazing experience!

While it does gatekeep me against DLC, on planets, 2D screens and exobiology and DLC I still enjoy all the space and flying.
It also gets me down that AA is so bad, and jaggies are poor, BUT, again. Its just enough to ignore.

I dream of Fdev picking up the VR and fixing up some low hanging fruit issues for us VR players, or dream harder with them fixing big issues!

I've paid arx for more support. Hoping it fuels them.

Quest 3 here too.

Never mind on-foot 3D, the basic game is much worse in VR than the original one.

Not going into planet surfaces, hyperjumps, black holes and such, the very cockpit has enormous fault - the little scratches and stains on the glass are gone. Replaced with a glare in the corners. Stupid. The stains nicely showed the dimensions of the cockpit, how far the windows are from you. So you feel the difference when changing from a small ship to a large one, from Sidey where you can stretch your arm to touch them, to an AspX to Anaconda etc... you know what I mean. The true spatial experience of cockpit in VR.

If you forgot how wonderful it was, just start old Legacy in VR once in a while.
