FaceTrackNoIR Reviews?

I figure with the large amount of people who play this game with E: D specific setups, some of you must have used FTNIR. I've got some questions about it before I dish out some cash for a new webcam (Old one shattered).
  1. Does FaceTrackNoIR work fairly well with Elite: Dangerous?
  2. Is it even comparable to TrackIR?
  3. How's the sensitivity?
  4. Does it hit performance too much?
  5. Is it accurate to minute head movements?

I have used Facetrack NoIR and it works fine with ED. I can't compare it with anything else as this is the only tracking software I have used.
The sensitivity can be adjusted. There are lots of option for this with multiple samples for smoothing and curves etc.
I think it uses 2 or 5% on CPU, has no perceivable impact on game.
It's not horribly accurate. At extreme head movements it can completely lose what way you are looking. It can also wobble about a bit, playing with sampling/curves helps to find sweet spot. Getting good lighting on your face helps.

I tend to set it so that it looks straight ahead unless I move my head by a fair amount then it moves quickly to the full up/down/left/right position. This tends to work well.
Latency is noticeable but quicker then fumbling around to find a key to hit.

On the whole a very cool piece of software, especially as it's free.

Hope that helps.

I do use FaceTrackNoIr, but not for tracking my face, but to track self made IR-clip. Program itself runs beautifully with E: D you just need webcam capable to atleast 60fps (ps3 eye cam is the best option, it can be configured upto 120fps). I have never used it for facetracking, but what I know it is bit heavier to use, as long as you have system that clears the min requirements easy it should not do much of a hit to performance. Again can't say much for the accuracy with tracking your face, but it tracks my clip verywell.

Again, if you have webcam capable of 60fps or more it works just fine, but if you have "normal" webcam which has 20-30fps it is going to feel bit laggy and stutter a bit because of the low framerate.

I'm currently using FTNoIR but I have and EDTracker on order. FT works ok but does need a bit of fiddling about to get acceptable results. The biggest issue I have with it is looking to the left or right and then down to activate the screens, FT does not handle this very well and it can be a bit hit or miss. I have spent hours tweaking curves but this is still an issue for me. Pitching up to track an opponent in a dogfight works much better so if my choice was FTNoIR or using the hat on my stick, I would take FT everytime. If you are thinking of spending some cash for tracking you should check out EDTracker, it looks good for the money. I will stick a review of this up here when I have it.

Happy hunting CMDR.
