Newcomer / Intro Failing tutorial "Advanced combat training"

I was reading through all of the posts given and I can't even take down the shields of the first ship. The target probably gets run down to over half shields by the time mine are gone and I'm full pip into system.

I'm finding this ridiculous and makes me very worried that I've wasted my money on a game I was hoping wouldn't be too combat centered only to find out it's very combat centered and it's incredibly tedious and nearly impossible in my opinion.

I keep my throttle in the blue, I max out my system pip when being shot at and max out my weapons for the couple seconds he's not while he's turning around in about half the time it takes me so I'm only getting about 2 or 3 hits in before I have to max out my sys pip again and try to get past him so he's not shooting me anymore.

Or I get stuck in a loop where I can't even see him while I'm getting shot directly above me. I've even tried staying in the blue and maxed out my engines to try and out maneuver them but I still can't get out of it and end up blowing up.

is going wrong here?

That is EXACTLY the experience I am having. Based on this thread, I'm going to just do the next tutorial on mining and go out into space a bit, see what happens. I've been getting frustrated all day (in short shifts) with this mission and it was making me feel like I'd wasted money.

Combat centric? Nope, although some people want to make it so. You can make your way up to Elite in trading and exploration without firing a single shot (or even equipping your ship with guns).

Tedious? Up to you. The grind is in your mind - if you set yourself a goal and want to obtain it in the shortest possible time, then yes. On the other hand, if you forget about the time and just play, not so much at all.

That sounds like a very sensible idea. As has been said there is no need to do any combat in this game, combat is an entirely voluntary activity. I have been running my current career as a trucker/trader with a bit of exploration successfully and happily for three months without ever carrying any weapons or any defensive kit save for basic shields.

I'm a newbie with an expert roommate who is grinding Engineer rep, and we are both perplexed: Why is a Final Boss mission even available in the training options? Even if I managed pips for engines and drop the first pilot without getting tailed, the two pilots appear afterwards and dropping chaff does nothing useful as they are on your ass the entire time.

There is no way a newb could -EVER- navigate this kind of conflict without serious training regarding pip management, evasive maneuvers training, or any other kind of preliminary training and I suspect any inspection on the data confirms this... so why is this ultra-frustrating option even available in training, as if it's something you're suppose to do?

And yet I did it on my third try, and I'm nothing special. There is no need to complete it though, but if you can do it the knowledge will serve you well.

You did it on your third try when the game was still in beta, stop telling incomplete stories devoid of context.

The mass consensus is that Advanced Combat Training is the final boss of this game. Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/7r7y1n/advanced_combat_training/

Breaking something like this down into individual concepts that are spelled out literally hurts no one and improves the quality of the game dramatically.

Just because it is training doesn’t mean it is just for beginners, there are rumours that some top level professional sports stars train. Besides this training against something easier than the real thing will not help you.

I am aware of the date but as it is past midday and T hasn’t called it as a joke.

I completed all the training missions/challenge scenarios/tutorials the first weekend I installed the game, before ever launching my CMDR.

They have changed since then, but with the exception of the highest rank incursion, where they give you a real lemon of Python, the training missions are generally easier than they used to be. Trial and error is the training. You mess up, you learn, you improve, you mess up less. Once you know the controls it's up to you to figure out how to leverage them.

I do think there could be some more in-depth systems management and tactical explanations before throwing players into the deep end, but this it's a minor quibble, IMO.

Anyway, the tutorial missions are quite obviously optional, and you don't need to do any of the training at all to play the game (though if more people did more of these missions before leaping into the game and cheesing their way to an Anaconda they'd probably be a lot better off). The challenge scenarios are hardly the pinnacle of the game's combat difficulty either and there is no "final boss" in such an open world game.

I still return to the training missions from time to time to polish those skills that may have atrophied during a break from the game, or from my CMDR spending most of his time in things that aren't stock Sidewinders.
