Fall DLC 2023 Speculation

All good points! We've kind of cycled through this in 2021 and 2022 as well, though there's been more evidence of continuing into 2022 and 2023 then, than there is now for continuing into 2024. But I still think it's entirely possible and very much hope we get a full 2024 support, or at least a couple of packs next year. Believe me, I'd rather it not end this year!

But if it does, my sentiments echo the feeling that we will have gotten a lot of animals added into the game over the year. More than I was thinking possible two years and even one year ago. The mammalian roster is very impressive, and can anyone imagine when this game first released, that we'd be to the point the generally most wanted mammals would be the Tassie and Wolverine? Sure, they had to have been someone's favorites, but overall? It's just an amazing roster, and IMO surpasses any other zoo game's roster, never mind how great the quality of the game has been.

And sure, there's some of us who do harp about birds all the time at this point. But to be honest, birds have really never been a huge aspect of zoo games in the past. Frontier wouldn't have to reach far to surpass that, but as of right now, they're fairly in line with the bird offerings from other games.

I'll continue to wish for the best, content for another year and a half (I really do not think it would continue past that point), but prepare for just two more packs.

I think it's time we start preparing for the end. It's by no means guaranteed, of course, and I'm not saying everyone should accept defeat, but Planet Zoo has had a pretty long life by now, and although there are still hundreds of animals we all want, the game can't sustain itself forever. Managing expectations is important, especially since we know that Frontier doesn't generally give any explicit indication that the end is nigh.

Looks at time

Hey its doomer o'clock

Let's just enjoy the speculation of the next dlc not the never ending deadline of the game. Look at some games which are in 10+ years of active development, just because a financial report doesn't mention planet zoo really doesn't mean the development is cancelled.
How is it "doomer o'clock"? Because some of us are being sensible? Nobody said development is cancelled, just that its's completely reasonable to expect that the endgame is near.

Maybe we will have a new option to randomly delete half our animals and half of our guests with one button push (snap).

This isn't the same as in the last couple of years when it was clear development was going to continue. We're in our fourth year, Frontier is targeting highly-requested animals, big free update features are winding down, and there are rumours of a new Planet title on the horizon. It's not "doomsaying" to suggest that signs are pointing to a wrap-up. Nobody is definitively saying we're at the end, just that it isn't at all outside the realm of possibility that the end is coming.

Idea animal pack bird around the world, with like aviary free update.

Here is my list of birds

1. snowy owl

2 and 3. spatula and ibis

4. wild turkey

5. shoebill

6. griffon vulture

7. great hornbill

8. scarlet macaw

9. Gabon Gray Parrot

10. Spectacled Pelican

11. Mandarin Duck

12. Rainbow Lorikeet

People doubted for support on 2023 so people doubting for support on 2024 is really unsurprising. Also one of the reasons being the updates being less substantial over time is kinda... it doesn't hold up imo, obviously as the game improves with updates, future ones will have less and less important things to improve, personally I'm surprised they have been able to add content in updates up to this point lol (only important thing missing is deep-diving Nile monitor imo) Also the next Planet game is unlikely to be related to Planet Zoo, closest thing I can think of is Planet Farm or something lol

Either way, ending support this year doesn't make much sense considering the dlcs are still selling well and dont show any signs getting less popular. PlanCo had 8 dlcs, PZ is at its 14th dlc, with 2 more coming, it's clear that Planet Zoo is a bigger content mine than PlanCo ever was, and they will extend support as much as they can, doing otherwise is missing an opportunity to make more money in an easy way (adding a few new animals is way less work and resources than making a full game and the profit is much higher).

Overall, there is more indication to think the game will have support next year than not.

Either way, in the case we get a Temperate dlc in fall instead of Highlands my bet on the 4 main picks would be:
  • Mute swan
  • Reeve's muntjac
  • Virginia opossum (we need to complete the trash trio)
  • Pine marten

An interesting idea that someone (i think it was SirMantelope) on BroNation brought up is that this years DLCs kinda complement the year 2 DLCs: The Tropical pack gave us SEA scenery that was missing in the SEA Animal DLC and the Arid Pack gave us more animals from Africa, which were missing in the Africa Pack, which in return had the fitting desert scenery. So my idea is that the next DLC would focus on expanding the North America DLC, perhaps a temperate forest DLC, giving us some forest animals from around the world (Tassi cough), but more important scenery from the forested areas of North America like loghuts, totem poles and such. Then the last DLC, an animal DLC, would focus on mountain animals, kinda fitting the europe DLC which had a lot of focus on mountains (ibex, lynx, the scenario map was on a giant mountain) or it would focus more on european and maybe again north american animals or animals from colder climates.

That's some good thinking! I think the idea of a temperate forest from around the world is quite likely. Some focus on North America for the scenery set would be great.

Mountains set to compliment the Europe pack also would be great. In all honesty, I'm of the opinion that North America doesn't need much expanding on, at least mammal wise. The Wolverine is a "needed" animal but also ranges into Europe and even Asia. Also IMO the only other iconic mammal from North America left is the American Black Bear, and I can't help but think that we may not get it. It's not the most requested bear, and we've already got so many bears I can't see them putting in more than one at this point, which is generally agreed should be the Spectacled Bear. Sure, there's other surprises or less wanted animals that could make it in, but I think those are the main points. Mammal wise anyways.

Yea apart from the wolverine there isnt much left from NA that i would want. Maybe a bighorn sheep or an elk would be a nice addtition but i would be fine without them

If you count Central America also to North America which it is from a geographical Point of view you have a lot of more options like the Peccary, Coati, Ocelot, Agouti and even the Tamandua.

I have a feeling that the game would end with update 1.20 in December 2024.

20 DLC’s with 20 updates. That would actually make a lot of sense ☺️

That would still give us 6 DLC’s with 41 new animals including 2 anniversary animals.

That’s still a lot of place for monkeys, birds and other most requested animals.

What do you think?
That would be my bet for future content. Also I think some dlcs are complements of released dlc.
As you pointed: Tropical dlc with South East Asia animal pack. And Arid animal pack with Africa dlc.
My ideas would be:
Temperate with North America.
Endangered Animal pack with Conservation
Highland Animal pack with Europe
Nocturnal with Twiglight

If we got 6 more DLCs, my hopes would be:
Woodlands/Temperate Scenery Pack
Avian Expansion pack (between 12-20 species including 2-4 habitat birds)
Islands Scenery Pack
Rainforests (stealth Amazon) Animal Pack. Or just call it an Amazon pack.
Children's/petting zoo Pack
Finale type of animal pack bringing in fairly low-work but highly requested animals.

Even at 4 packs I could hope for the below. I would remove a dedicated Avian pack, but I could see flying birds worked into each DLC as exhibit animal. I've figured out rosters for each of the below that would get me a really good portion of animals I've put as high priority to me.
Woodlands/Temperate Scenery Pack
Rainforest/Amazon Animal Pack
Islands Scenery Pack
Finale type of animal pack

Two packs is really really difficult though. I'd have to go with a Woodlands/Temperate scenery pack and a Finale type of pack. Or, barring that, still bring in the Rainforest/Animal pack. No exhibit birds, we'd get a two toed sloth as the wrap up/Amazon animal instead. There would still be many animals missing and would really only hit the bare minimums for what I'm wanting.

And of course, all of these line ups and saying it would included most/little of what I want, is taking into account only my personal choices for the packs, not what Frontier would actually put in. My track record with this is pretty spotty. I've guessed mostly right with Europe, North America, Africa and Australia rosters, which is only 4 of 14 packs, but it does kind of also take into consideration that the actual themes of the last four packs have also been very different from what theme I was thinking might come. So considering an animal pack of 7 habitat animals that I would think would be perfect, Frontier would likely end up including only 2-3 of them in the pack. So that's like.. around 15, 10 or 5 animals in total being what I'd actually want to see.

My biggest hope would be -

Children's zoo stealth SA booster pack with dwarf goat, squirrel monkey, muscovy duck, turkey

NA black bear anniversary animal

Alpine pack with takin, markhor, pallas cat, spectacled bear, rock hyrax, gelada, wolverine

Island pack with tassie, tree kangaroo, Japanese serrow, rock hopper penguin

Some kind of magical pack with colobus monkeys, saiga, coati, musk ox, musk deer, Pere David's deer, and a swan. Idk what you would call this pack. "Things Pentoleaf wants that don't fit pack"

Some kind of magically aviary expansion.

Do we get a final anniversary animal? Let's go hog wild with a wild boar.

Exhibit chameleons, cobras, and birds.

A brand new rig for free?

DOUBT.
They could rise. Two years ago a very similar to a base game and not very popular (Meta Wishlist votes) Lemur. Last year a DLC animal based popular Red Deer. And this year a complete new rig with a very requested animal 😃. But I also doubt it. Something like the Wild Boar, American Black Bear or Blackbuck seem realistic choices to me.
