Fall DLC 2023 Speculation

Yeah I definitely don't expect Frontier to come anywhere close to catering to my personal wants lol, I'll be over the moon just for the Tasmanian devil at this point.

(also there aren't more animals in North America, there's just a lot more people from North America so animals from there are more highly requested)
Tbh I don’t think the devil is coming at this point and I wouldn’t really be sad without it.

The devil will also probably require a unique rig, and if @Iben said was true and they don’t have as many devs, it further proves that it might not be coming.

While the addition of no animal is guaranteed, I just can't see them ending the game without the Tasmanian devil at this point. It's been a highly discussed species amongst the community ever since the Australia Pack, at the top of the community metawishlist for over a year, and fits into a large number of potential packs (islands, woodlands, temperate, nocturnal, endangered, etc). Also, I don't see why Frontier would just stop producing new rigs altogether for their last few DLC (if that is the case at all) - it's not like they didn't just go all out on the crested porcupine, which is arguably a much harder animal to bring to life.

It's been my most wanted animal since launch so I'll be pretty upset if they skip it after all this buildup lol.

On top of that, you can't just move people like numbers in an Excel sheet. Just because devs from Frontier Foundry became available, does not mean in the slightest that those devs are automatically suited to work on or even interested in Planet Zoo. Depending on the skill level or the field they work in, it could take up to more than half a year before they are nearly as productive as the team that's currently working on it.

Looking at the games developed under the Frontier Foundry flag, they are vastly different games than what Planet Zoo is so whilst some of them could certainly be moved there, the majority most likely are still working on Stranded Alien Dawn (of which I'm pretty sure some of PZ's creature and flora devs moved to already) or similar strategy/combat games like their Warhammer series.

Given that those games are much closer to what those devs had worked on previously, it makes much more financial sense to let them work on those games because the integration track is much shorter. If those devs are still there of course. When things like this happen, people leaving the company on their own accord or because they had to is pretty common.
I always appreciate your take on these things.* And this is particularly poignant! Especially given the differences between the games for Foundry versus core Frontier, as you pointed out.

Whenever people talk about the timing of the social media posts or whatever... I always want to add "or maybe they had a meeting that ran late" or "they hit traffic coming into the office."

* TBH, I appreciate your takes on a lot of things! LOL

I don't think we have any "absolute" mammals that are "for sure" to get included anymore - I honestly feel like the last two of those were taken care of with the Conservation pack. Of course, others may have a different view.

Highly requested mammals? Sure, and I do think the Tasmanian Devil's sat where it's sat on the meta-list for so long, and has enough community support, that's it's extremely likely we'll get it, but I could also see them possibly ending the game without it. At some point, they have to draw the line, restructure and move on, likely in a trickle from one project to the next instead of one whole leap.

I still hope very strongly for the Wolverine and the Tasmanian Devil. But the were never in my "must haves" which I'm thankful all mammals in that are in the game. I don't feel like they're in the game's must haves either, not if you look at the entire history of what animals were wanted for the zoo. Very few people probably came right out at launch and said "wait, where's the Tasmanian Devil (or Wolverine, or Coati etc). Nope, it was: Where's the Leopard....no Penguin? no meerkat or kangaroo - and two themes that continue through to today, where are the marine animals, and where are (more) birds?

Yes, I'm sure some people were talking about the Wolverine and Devil from the start. I'm sure some people were also talking about the Pacarana and Kit Fox too....just nowhere near enough to claim a large amount of support. We're only at the point we're at now with the Devil and Wolverine because everything that was generally deemed more important has already made it in.

ETA: Hot take: The Tasmanian Devil and Wolverine were not really all that popular for inclusions at launch, and they're only "highly requested" now because Frontier has hit all the necessary points already, at least mammal wise. Sigh excepting more New World Monkeys, which by the discussion around them, it would seem they should be higher up on the lists than they actually are.

Hot take but I kind of agree, don’t get me wrong I want the Tasmanian devil and Wolverine in the game. I don’t find their inclusion as important as new world monkeys though, I find that most of the important mammal zoo species have been added in game. That’s especially why I have been getting more and more desperate for a bird inclusion in Planet Zoo. All of the important mammals are here, but where are the parrots, waterfowl, eagles, or owls? I’m more bothered by the lack of non-mammal species in game, than the more and more niche mammal species.

I don't think this is a hot take, in fact I think most people would agree, including myself (even if I was one of those few people who went "where's the Tasmanian devil?" at launch). Although what species are "necessary" is subjective of course - I've seen devils in a larger number of zoos than I have meerkats or lions.

I have never seen one in person. A lot of American zoos don’t have them, which might be why we haven’t gotten them yet cause a lot of their audience is in the usa

I've never seen the devil, they are rare in Europe and completely absent in Britain. I still feel it is essential however, as it is such an iconic species and I think we really should have at least one marsupial carnivore in the game. (I wouldn't mind getting a quoll as well) 😅 :p

Yeah, those two animals are my big two mammal wants, but if the game ended now...it wouldn't feel incomplete without them. But more new world monkeys it would, even if I'm not tied to an exact species on the monkeys and actually want the Devil and Wolverine more species wise.

And birds of course....habitat as well as exhibit potential birds..in one case it's highly underutilized and in the other, notably absent.

The thing about the devil is it’s not too common outside Australia, and the majority of PZ players are American and European. There are players all around the world But a lot of them are there. Frontier might want to appeal to the most audiences and include animals that would satisfy the majority.

Now the devil is #1 on the wishlist so it does have the demand, I just don’t think it will happen.

I think its partly because there are alot of different species of monkey in comparisson to only one species of devil. If you would round up all the votes for monkeys they would be for sure nr 1 on the list

Well the options are virtually endless of course, far too many to list here or fit on a map (looking at the metawishlist will give you a list of some 700 species wanted by the community). Sorting the top 50 most requested animals into continental categories though:

North America
  1. Wolverine
  2. Walrus
  3. Musk Ox
  4. West Indian Manatee
  5. Ocelot
  6. Sea Otter
  7. Geoffroy's Spider Monkey
  8. Wapiti
  9. American Black Bear
  10. Alligator Snapping Turtle
  11. Collared Peccary
South America
  1. South American Coati
  2. Black Howler Monkey
  3. Golden Lion Tamarin
  4. West Indian Manatee
  5. Ocelot
  6. Spectacled Bear
  7. Patagonian Mara
  8. Southern Tamandua
  9. Greater Rhea
  10. Bush Dog
  11. Collared Peccary
  12. Guianan Squirrel Monkey
Europe
  1. Wolverine
  2. Walrus
  3. Great White Pelican
  4. Wild Boar
  5. Mute Swan
Asia
  1. Wolverine
  2. Walrus
  3. Takin
  4. Markhor
  5. Saiga
  6. Blackbuck
  7. Great White Pelican
  8. Sea Otter
  9. Palla's Cat
  10. Wapiti
  11. Sloth Bear
  12. Gaur
  13. Mute Swan
Africa
  1. Secretary Bird
  2. Hamadryas Baboon
  3. Shoebill
  4. Grey-crowned Crane
  5. Serval
  6. Honey Badger
  7. Gelada
  8. Great White Pelican
  9. Mantled Guereza
  10. Coquerel's Sifaka
  11. Greater Kudu
  12. Aye-aye
  13. African Leopard
  14. Nile Crocodile
  15. Kirk's Dik-Dik
  16. Gerenuk
Oceania
  1. Tasmanian Devil
  2. Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo
  3. North Island Brown Kiwi
  4. Short-beaked Echidna
  5. Matchie's Tree Kangaroo
And of course everyone has their own priorities. For example, my personal wishlist of almost 60 species includes only 5 animals from North America (only 2 without Central America and the Caribbean) while having 20 species from Oceania.
Just realised tree kangaroo is probably more popular than it seems considering it has 2 species on the top 50.

I think most people really dont care, especially the casuals who make up the vast majority of the player base.

This is true, but we've also had the platypus, an animal that is rarer in zoos both in Australia and internationally (where it's only kept in a single zoo). Of course the platypus is much more of a well-known animal than the devil, but it does show that Frontier is willing to include species that aren't common in zoos where the majority of their audience lives. I'd also bet the majority of players outside the forum don't really care for realism as much as people here do, so it wouldn't really matter to them anyway.

That's such a niche group that you'd have to also round all the Quoll and Numbat vote sinto devil for that to be fair. That's why some wishlists have the general animal votes section.

My neighbors are so stupid…

This doesn’t really belong in this thread but imma say this anyways

There was a red-tailed hawk on my neighbor’s roof a few minutes ago, and they threw balls at it.

Why? They’re literally harassing a wild animal.

Luckily it wasn’t hurt and ended up flying away but that’s just so stupid.

Good point. I think we need 6 more New World Primates, with an absolute necessity of 3. NowI have my preferences, but none of them actually are even in my top 20 mammal wants. Granted I’m not as adamant about primates as some are so that may rank lower than the average person’s own wants, but to a lesser degree that’s probably pretty accurate to the community as a whole

Im not a crazy primate builder and have only actually built for capuchins atm, but I have to say they sure are fun. Here’s a tunnel I made with them. It was one of my earlier builds so it’s not the best but I was proud of it. The tunnel is also like 5 meters tall so that’s kinda out of scale. Sorry for the bad quality I use my tv as my monitor and I’m too lazy to take a screenshot and send it to my phone so I just take it from my phone lol.
