I would say it's a bug like those floating station pieces, but this one is actually visibly damaged in ways I haven't seen before. It seems like it might be there on purpose. OP would do well to provide as much information as possible about where and when they saw this.
So that is where I left my BattleCruiser. I've been looking for it all month.

so could be one of the thinsg that were told to "be out there but not found yet" and are part of soem jkey story driving features.
On the other side it makes not much sense that a unknown cruiser is out threre, such a important ship would not go lost that easily without anyone formt he gouvernment knowing it's gone.

Fjorgyn is in Fed space, he probably just dropped into a distress beacon.
but broken capital ships? isn't that soemhting that shouldn't exist so far because they all jump out? But then yes could be a patchbug

Pretty sure one of the distress beacon encounters is to help battle cruisers. Devs added them in the last patch... Let's see what he say's when he returns.
Edit - Did a quick search, here's something from another forum
I play on Xbox one was looking to see my first capital ship up close in achenar and when I dropped in on a distress beacon was surprised find a Farragut disabled and badly damaged from a fight with something else as big probably a majestic. Was gonna salvage the wreckage but than it crashed. Thought it was interesting searching for a Majestic and found a Farragut. I'll try and pull the screenshots off of the box somehow

Guys sector is in the bubble, was doing a local mission to kill 90 pirates, was gettin a bit bord so decided to explor far side of sector (2 stars), not in sector now but wil say it was a strong signal source, when dropped there was about 20-30 small wanted ships and farragut just sitting there.
Oh, well, suppose there's a mundane answer for everything then. Guess I can leave the thargoid hats in storage a while longer.
Yeah sadly it's nothing too out of the ordinary. Am pretty sure this is why we don't see Farragut's and Majestic's in the usual places anyone, devs want to make it look like they are patrolling occupied space getting into brawls.
