Favorite ship design and why

The Cobra!
It has me trapped and I like it. :)
But also the Python.
It looks so tasty!

I love old sailing ships, especially Frigates. Seeing one of those pull up to your shores in the 18th century I think would be quite astounding, and possibly frightening if you were on the wrong side.

ED? A few...

Asp and Python: robust utility design and great soundscape.
Imperial ships in general: the luxury design.
Orca: the only non-imperial luxury boat (so far).

Outside ED?

From ED I'd say it has to be either Vulture, Imperial Clipper or Imperial Courier. I actually kinda like the Sidewinder too despite how simple it is.

As for anything else... I feel like there should be something, but right now I can't think of anything else aside from the Swordfish from Cowboy Bebop.

Then you should check out the Master and Commander series by Patrick O'Brian.
They are really something else.
Also the film Master and Commander, based on the books.
If you have not already. :)

"Bell bottom trousers, coat of navy blue,
Make 'im climb the rigging like his father used to do..."

(I'd best stop there! ;) )

Don't stop on my account. :)

In Elite, it has to be the Dropship. It looks sturdy, industrial almost, functionnal, nothing fancy on the exterior, it just gets the job done.

Outside of ED, I remember this one from District 9, again because of how "industrial" it looks. I can't help but wonder "what's this little pipe for? and this big round structure ? and this rectangular box strapped on the side ?"

I have no idea what Cowboy Bebop is but that's a pretty cool looking ship!

Noted. I have not but now that you mention it, I have heard of them. I'll check them out, thanks :D

This caught my interest, so I'll play ball.

Favorite ship in the current Elite: Dangerous would probably have to be the Diamondback Explorer. Chunky, excellent canopy and thruster design, appealing landing gear. It feels like it has a little bit of Alien and a little bit of Mechwarrior in it. I just really wish the engines would twist like proper VTOL engines; that is its one flaw for me.

From other fiction, far too many. Being a science fiction and just science nerd makes that list awful long, but to name a few of the ones that have stuck with me over the years in no particular order:

  • The Spacecraft - Sphere (Not the sphere itself mind you, the spacecraft that... arrived. You don't get to see more than the fin in the movie and it's not really described much, but I thoroughly enjoy the concept of it. It's a mystery I would like remain a mystery.)
  • Raptor - Battlestar Galactica, the reimagined series from 2004.
  • ISS Nostromo - Alien (Lovely industrial depression design.)
  • The Ghostship - Homeworld (And many more, but this one is just delightful.)
  • Naggarok - Homeworld: Cataclysm (Interesting concept and design.)
  • Stiletto - Nexus: The Jupiter Incident (Twirly spinny crew Torus!)
  • Event Horizon - Event Horizon (Looks like it could snap in half, but I just love the look of it.)
  • Bentus - Homeworld 2 (The Bentusi harbour ship, need I say more?)
  • Explorer Class - Babylon 5
  • Valley Forge - Silent Running
  • That one Battletech Inner Sphere Battlecruiser/Frigate that looks a little bit like a battlestar? (It's been too long, I can't remember)

And many others, lords help me.

From ED: The Orca. Although waiting for the Beluga, that might become my favourite.

From films, well, always had a soft spot for this one... such a strange design.
