Favorite Ship for Planet landings

So I'm just curious as to what people think is the best or most enjoyable ship to use for landing on the planet surface?

Right now I'm using my Python, but I keep meaning to buy another Asp and equip that with a couple hanger bays to use it for planet landings. That way I can use the space on my Python for cargo. I also think Asp because of the down view from the cockpit you get. The Type 6 could also achieve this and is cheaper too. Of course the type 6 would not be for attacking on planet surfaces, just for exploring etc.

Any thoughts?

I have only landed on planets with the Corvette....so I am not sure how other ships compare but I am having a great time dismissing it and recalling it just to watch it fly.....

I've used a Python and a T9, and I learned, at the price of 25m in rebuys so far, that the Python is NOT the ship to go blasting through canyons in, nor is it good for dive and swoops on high g planets, that thing does NOT bounce for jack and inertia is a stone cold mother.

Watch that Python, or other heavy ships, on approach... I bounced in the dirt just outside the landing pad at some city on a rather high gravity planet, luckily taking no damage. I was firing retro thrusters, doing my darndest to minimize the impact when I realized I was coming in far too hot. The wife probably heard me screaming "no! no! no! no! no! no! no! no! no! *clang!* thank goodness!" In reality those last few words were less family friendly.. haha

I still fly the Python for planetfall missions. I just like to park the ship and drive around looking at it. I just treat it more like a well armed bus and not a Porche.

Oh yeah, it's NOT a race car by any means, and it does NOT handle well in tight spaces. My FIRST planetary caused rebuy was me boosting through some tight canyons, went to boost through a turn and realized I wasn't going to make it, so I tried to lift up and over the rim and....BANG! Ship hit and starting spinning round and round and I got it under control JUST in time to smack cockpit first into the other side of the canyon and..rebuy screen. It was fun, and it was expensive and I only did it two more times before I realized that the Python just won't do that :)

I've also learned that when coming down on higher g planets, do NOT be hauling ass straight down when you engage the docking computer! I did that and was sitting there in absolute shock as my ship suddenly flipped over topside down and smacked into the surface right next to the landing pad at full boost. I was able to get it under control and landed it manually without a rebuy screen, but it had less than 10% hull. The docking computer gets a little confused by high g if you are coming in really hot and pointing straight down, so I've learned to level out and slow down on high g planets while still a good 8km or better up, let it slowly sink down to 4.5km, request docking permission and then let the DC take over. So far, doing that, no issues with the DC.

It's a video game, I do stupid stuff, I'm aware I'll do stupid stuff and I don't get upset or angry over my own dumbass actions. They make me laugh, I'm having fun, it's expensive ingame but it's a video game after all, if I'm not doing something stupid at some point, I'm not having fun and should move on to another game. I was in a guild in Dungeons and Dragons Online where if we didn't have at least 1 complete party wipe per dungeon, we weren't having fun. We actually competed to see who could die the most times in the most dumbass fashion, we had a blast doing that. Funny thing was, we could do everything in nothing flat, perfectly by the numbers, but that's no fun. Fun was our naked runs through the hardest dungeons, no armor, no weapons, just running through punching stuff...

so far I've landed a cutter, a corvette, DBS, Cobra, and a FAS, and I must say my favorite is the FAS,

cutter and corvette are so big it's hard to find a landing spot, DBS I had real issues with ground clearance, my SRV often wouldn't fit under it to board again and so I'd have to dismiss it and recall it, I once did this 4 times before I could actually re-enter my ship. I don't have any specific complaints about the cobra other than I simply prefer the FAS in general.

So I just had my first real close call. Not with the ship but with my SRV. I came across a sight that had some canisters so I started scooping them up only to find one of them was personal weapons. Then this massive drone, I think named gamoth or something like that was there. Targeting it, I saw a wanted pop up. So I started to shoot. Well, that was one tough drone. Getting the shields down and it's hull to 88% caused 40% left on my haul. So I high tail it out of there only to have incoming missile warnings and exposing going off all over the place. I thought I was in a scene of Apocalypse Now.

Recalling my ship and driving as fast as I can I manage to make it back to my ship with 6% hull left on my SRV. I take off and go chase the drone in my Python. It doesn't take long to get it down but still a little battle as the massive drone is firing everything it has at me.

My question is, what happens if I loose the hull of my SRV? Do I end up back in my ship or is my ship lost too?

Wish I snapped some pictures but I was too focused on getting back to the ship, wish there was a replay function.

Your ship will depart to orbit - if you lose your SRV on the surface then you will have the option of restarting in your ship (ie in orbit)

Happened to me in Beta

Currently using the Cobra mk4, loads of internals for just about anything you want, I've used the Asp scout agile and fun to fly, the FAS feels like it could crash, leave a new crater and fly away with a little scuffed paintwork ;) I haven't tried landing the Keelback but I reckon it'd work fire (cue the Firefly soundtrack :)) and when the on board fighter becomes available it's going to be a popular ship!

For now the Cobra mk4 is ideally suited for planetary landings it's small enough to land in small craters and has more than enough firepower for any ground installations, finding new "materials" also adds to your explorer rating as well.

If you are in the SRV when it gets destroyed, you'll get the rebuy screen. DO NOT PANIC! You have the option there to respawn on your ship at no expense, select that and all will be good.

I know this from personal first hand experience...multiple times of course, one of those times to a Goliath, which is the huge skimmer, that thing is a badass! I took a mission to free data, and naturally it was at a full sized planetary station, not some rinky dink little outpost station with a few skimmers, oh no. Turrets everywhere, Goliaths everywhere and tons of Sentries(the little skimmers) roaming around. Needless to say, I didn't get the data freed, I discovered that Sentries are a bit of pain to take out when there's 10 of them all firing at you at once but it's doable if you play smart. And then the Goliaths and turrets got into the act..missiles tear up SRV shields btw, and those things have LOTS of them and...yeah, my SRV didn't make it out of there. Nor did my second SRV....and I tried to go in with my ship and almost lost my Python to those damn things!

The asp scout is quite fun on planets, the imperial eagle, keelback, and anaconda are also ships that have a sort of charm about them over the surface. I haven't taken every ship to a surface yet but those I have enjoyed the most.

The Asp eh?
I favour it for landings because of the view and size. Small enough to park easily but big enough to easily drive a vehicle under.
However: that view down that you mention is somewhat compromised by the sudden appearance of the system screen popping up ... something of a design fault methinks.

The Anaconda, it can be a bit of a pain to land, but it is so worth it when you drive away she flies up into the air, love the thrusters on that ship.

Ah the Python.I really enjoyed landing My Python planet side. I found it easier to handle then my old asp explorer due to the slower movements of the size of the Python. Really nice looking ship too. I like the python for everything actually and was my main ship until this morning when I completed my climb to rear admiral and traded her in on a shiny new Corrvette. Which has not been disappointing thus far when landing planet side and has proven to be a worthy replacement/upgrade to My trusty, much loved and enjoyed Python.

There is an option to disable the automatic pop-up of the UI panels. It's somewhere in the Control settings =)

Ninja'd...yes, Control Settings, think it's under the Freelook options, I was just in there the other day and I'll be damned if I can remember the exact location...

Kristov is our "Last Starfighter" caught in a ship that moves more like a Bradley...lol...actually his canyon runs look more like he's trying on the "Mavrick" top gun skin...just making his ship do things no one ever thought it would...just a bit of fun there...:)

I've enjoyed taking my Cobra III and IV in for landings...gotta be careful though as it can make getting the scarab back tricky, love flying my vulture thru the atmosphere and down canyons....its agility works well for it...but no landings as no point...its not outfitted for planetside work except killing, and asp works really well planetside...don't fly the space trucks so wouldn't know bout them...its fun though...found a crater the other day out past the bubble had all sorts of good stuff in it...fastest time on a planet yet for collecting mats.

Just you wait, I'll have you in that second seat and show you how a Python isn't meant do what I'm about to try!
