Love modern family, i'm up to date with game of thrones but i don't rate it as highly as some of my mates, they would never let me hear the end of it if they saw it was not in my top 5 lol.

Formative TV I remember (not chronological, but ranked in importance to me):

1. Quatermass and the Pit (1958-59) 6 episodes - Scared me silly, I hid behind the couch to watch it (I was 8).

2. Dr Who - William Hartnell - the rest of the old boys were a joke.

3. It's a Square World - Michael Bentine

4. Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In - entailed a weekly visit to the pub which had a colour telly.

5. The Man From Uncle

Runners up:

Monty Python's Flying Circusssssss

Space 1999 - really just season 1 or else UFO.

I'll just go with currently showing stuff, in no particular order:

Orphan Black
Game of Thrones
Sense8
Narcos
The Expanse

Z...

only 5? heck that is sooooooo hard.. but ok

1: Babylon 5
2: UFO
3: Steptoe & Son
4: Dad's Army
5: Porridge
...but I could list my fave top 50 if needed :D
(sadly 95% of it is 60's-80's stuff. seems most of todays TV programmes just don't appeal to me)

They must all be shows that I'll rewatch, so some great programmes haven't made the list, like The Expanse and Game of Thrones, shows I thoroughly enjoy but don't actually rewatch.

1) Babylon 5
2) Quantum Leap
3) Frasier
4) Yes Minister, Yes Prime Minister (technically they're two, but...)
5) Red Dwarf

Yes Minister is one of the very best programs made by the BBC.

Pure Genius... I can't believe they tried to remake it....

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned "Doomwatch" - I thought of adding it to my list but it didn't quite cut the mustard.

Odd, I was thinking about it earlier today as well. Some were great, but 'tomorrow the rat' had that terrible, comically awful, scene in the kitchen with stuffed rats.

Some might think that the original House of Cards made for compelling TV, but I couldn't possibly comment...

Other compelling shows:

The Crystal Maze
Red Dwarf
Band of Brothers
X Files

Not necessarily my 'top 5', because I'd have to think about it some more before I was sure I'd not forgotten anything, but 5 to start with...

Dr Who (For sheer longevity, if nothing else...)
MASH
The Simpsons
Father Ted
Peaky Blinders (A bit of a hidden gem, I suspect)

As for Doomwatch, which MalcYorks and Yaffle discuss above, I watched a few episodes again a year or two back, and I have to say they haven't aged well. TV drama has improved a lot over the years, even if TV quality as a whole has declined. The Doomwatch team can't really be blamed for dodgy special effects, given the limitations they were working under, but some of the acting was decidedly wooden.

I'd like to add another show to my "maybe top 5" category, and it's....Lost. Controversial i know, but it was original, and no one can deny it's quality in the first few seasons.

Quite right and the reason I didn't actually include it. It was, however, extremely popular and I think brought a lot of very relevant issues into "general discussion". So I considered whether is was influential enough to include. I remember people frequently talking about it the next day. The "giant rat" episode was a bit "naff" as has been said but I remember at the time that there was indeed great concern over seemingly larger rats being encountered, a theme that resurfaces every so often, as at present.

I can't believe I've missed Peep Show...Also, nobody even mentioned it? o_O Absolute masterpiece.
BTW, you can find all of it for free on youtube. I guess they didn't bother to copyright strike it, or just said "screw it, let people enjoy".
