FD Blows Me Away - Interesting Functionality Found

CMDR Jack Lewis here, don't post very often but something happened today which really impressed me and I thought it worth posting for others to see.
First up to set the scene. I play in a private group usually with my son Chris (CMDR MCWebbo) who is still a bit of a noob. I've been playing since premium beta, he's been playing for a few months.

We've been working on getting his empire rank up (he wants a Cutter) and I usually ride shotgun for him in my Corvette as he does the missions.

Today I was just playing on my own and came across a planet with 7 bios and I started scanning them using my Scarab to get around. Chris then joined the session and decided to come and scan the bios with me. However he forgot that his Chieftain is not equipped with an SRV. So: when he arrived, he was faced with having to fly & walk for every sample. Then it occurred to me that I have both a Scarab and a Scorpion on my Corvette and I suggested he board my ship and see if he could borrow the Scorpion.

He did that and it worked flawlessly - wow.
Thank you Frontier - that was a great experience and it just blew me away - I really expected the game to crash but no.
At the end of the session Chris returned the Scorpion to my ship then went back to his own ship without any problems at all.
I should mention we were both careful not to exceed 2km distance from the ships which were landed very close to each other.
Perhaps if we do it again one or both of us will go beyonf 2 clicks and see what happens.

Glad you are both having fun!

I can recommend HIP 8444 / HIP 8758 as a good place to get imp. rank, as there are easy runs there where you can ferry ship missions both directions with a single jump.

I'm not sure I can recommend the cutter, but everyone is different, of course. For me its: "looks like a fish, moves like a fish, steers like a cow"

Chris: "o7 dad, whatcha doing on this planet?"

OP: "o7, son. Oh nothing much, just scanning some plants. You know, for a change of pace."

Chris: "Mind if I join you?"

OP: "Come on in, the more the merrier!"

<A few minutes later>

Chris: "Oh no dad, my ship doesn't have a vehicle bay."

OP: "That's a shame, maybe you can follow me in your ship while I look for plants in my SRV."

Chris: "Yeah, guess so..."

OP: "Wait a sec, I think I have a spare scorpion in my ship. Not sure if you can use it though, want to give it a try?"

Chris: "No harm trying, hope the game is stable enough lol. Who knows what might happen."

OP: "Ok, just land your ship next to mine and board it."

Chris: "Ok I'm in your ship now. Let's see, where's the the multicrew controls... ok, here goes nothing."

OP: "Please FDev, please FDev, don't let anything happen to my son."

Chris: "Omg dad, I think it's working."

<OP's son disembarks in a shiny scorpion>

Chris: "IT WORKS, DAD! IT WORKS!!!"

OP: "OMG PRAISE FDEV!! NOW DRIVE TO ME, SON!"

Chris: "DAAAADDD!!"

OP: "SOOOONNNN!!"

Chris: "DAAADDD!!"

Manly tears were shed .

Glad he's enjoying the game. That's what we love to see🚀 :)

When I started playing with someone, a couple months ago, I didn't know that I could take 1 Scarab out and he could take the other one. I guess I really had never thought about it. It's nice to roam around a moon/planet with someone else.

If the ship dismisses you'll be fine. You just board it as you normally would. ✨💫

Great story but one word of caution particularly if you try this during ground combat. A friend and I were doing restoration missions and landed in his ship outside a settlement occupied by scavengers, we disembarked in 2 of his SRV's and approached the settlement. As I had a G5 sniper rifle, I decided to leave the SRV and get on to the rooftops. My friend, in front of me still in his SRV opened fire on a Scav and I died instantly. turns out that my SRV auto-fired when he did and shot me in the back.

Bug - or feature? The jury is still out on that one. :)

Up until a couple of months ago, you couldn't. SRV in multicrew was broken at launch and remained that way for years.

I bet you pooped your suit. That's awesome!

That's one of the first things a friend and I tested during the alpha last year. Back then it did not work. Docking the SRV would freeze it in mid-air, and at some point the game would just crash.

Glad to hear it works better now.

That was really cool! May I ask, your son and you, are you playing at the same household network connected to the same router?

Ohhh you forgot to install the IFF module in the SRV! :D

Yeah, it's pretty nice when it works out. I was doing some exploration with a carrier passenger and we were able to hop in a Scorpion together and collect samples while riding together. I was better at being able to spot them so I drove his SRV to the bio sites.

Sure would be awesome if we could get there with our ships too! I know that probably opens a pandora's box of problems and bugs though.

Shortly after Ody launched, this was one of the first things we tried, sharing each others SRVs.

My BIL and I were doing an Ody scav mission and he died, after I finished the mission, I flew to the jail he was at and picked him up and took him back to his ship. It was awesome...but as you say, too bad it doesn't work better...

Glad you had fun and enjoyed this feature.

For future reference: he doesn't have to board your ship to use your Scorpion SRV. He just needs to be on your team. You can deploy in the Scorpion and he can hop in. Or you can deploy one SRV, board your ship manually, and deploy another SRV.

I've provided SRVs for a four man team, all of whom flew their own ships in (and didn't have SRVs of their own). It works fine.

The only issue I've run into is trying to do physical multicrew (everyone on my ship) and having it work consistently. It has a nasty habit of losing sync/disconnecting one of the crew mates whenever you instance (most often entering super cruise or jumping to a new system). If they bring their own ships, so we can change instances individually, we rarely have problems.

It was hilarious, I almost laughed as much as the time I tried to use my pimped out Maverick with improved jetpack to beat my Recalled ship to the settlement landing pad forgetting how important timing your Arrival Vs Your ship really is

Hah! So I had a crazy close call once sneaking around a settlement. I was not paying attention and just trying to stay out of scanning range when suddenly I hear this rumbling above me and realize I'm standing on a landing pad and a Cobra is about to pancake me. I have to sprint out of there, directly into the now interested guard's view. He immediately wants to scan me with me carrying my e-breaches and stolen goods. Well, I guess it's going to go that way then.

Shooting, alarms, screams, yelling, grenades, all ensue. I was laughing thinking of that line from "Batman Begins": "You never did learn to mind your surroundings".
