I always pondered the viability of an 'EVE' style set up..
But what if the ships themselves had bonuses to various weapons or modules. Each ship would then have a unique attribute that could make them shine in a particular role.
If a ship has a bonus to pulse lasers, and you engineer the pulse lasers it would amplify the application... But ensure it's on an eagle or something, which would hopefully make eagles more viable.. just one example but... it'll be about optimizing and balancing weapons choices on various ships, rather than get THE best ship, and put the BEST weapons on it to make a homage to fromage.
