I can see FD removing paid skins, because money is such an overrated commodity.
I can't see any screenshots of the problem.
I kinda have to agree here, these skins are simple enough that I'd prefer to just see them in the game as options for everyone. It's just a colour.
I'm not even fully convinced that camo paint jobs are worth any money. There are a few skins out there that look cool but ultimately, I'm paying for a skin that I will rarely see while playing the game normally.
I'm happy for Frontier to continue with it, because it's extra income that can fund the game I enjoy but I do consider it nickel and diming.
On the other hand the "ship kits" is a cool idea and I'd like to see more of those on the store.
one reason i don't think they will let the community make paint jobs.. it just not that simple;
its not just a BMP...
There are Secular maps, normal maps, Probably Diffusion maps, and even more maps i don't know about.
Then there are MIP Maps and LODs(level of detail) to work out... making sure the skins look correct on all LODS
Even the simplest paint jobs won't have been made in 10 minuets
ADDED:
Don't know how they have mapped the UVs, haven't looked, but probably uses more than one texture (e.g 2*1024 square, rather than 4048)... with out a base model to work with in 3d space, it may be very difficult to get a nice looking, lined up design.
beyond a lot of the community base

They should ask me to make the paintjobs![]()
None of that is particularly complicated even for an amateur.
Again, creating mipmaps is nothing particularly complicated. Most of the time it can even simply be automated.
The majority of skins in ED are just a simple paintover of the diffuse map, there's only a few exception (typically the metallic skins) which go beyond that.
Not difficult, just bothersome, but again that's something modders are used to. I have spent quite a few hours painting bright colors all overtextures to figure out how the artist unwrapped the model.
Indeed. If Fdev released a Skin creation tool for ED ships.
And those skins can be submitted to Fdev for approval and sale... Maybe even sold at a discount because it cost them nothing to make.
Then this game could become very diverse and interesing and the community can get creative in the game they love.
i guess they could, but that would be a lot of work for them to create. More work 'i'd guess' that taking design submissions and working on them.
Still a well designed tool would be nice![]()
...Still the problem of LOD brake down... if you don't have access to the full model and its LODs, you can't see who the textures works across them, so would need some skill there (and do fdeve want to 'lend out assets')... sometimes LODs need there own texture, especially at the lower end, then the Normal map really comes into play. (don't know if FD does that)...
The normal map shouldn't ever need to change as the model LODs. If it does you've got a much bigger problem than you think in your UV unwrap.
This.
Nothing says "not good enough" than people voting with their wallets.
