Fdev hint at space legs (Ship theft) Too soon™ - Barben video link inside

Honestly, ship theft is incredibly tough to add to ED in a way that isn't either extremely punishing to 'casuals', or extremely exploitable. If I can use insurance to get a new corvette when someone steals mine, I'll let everyone on my friendlist come and steal my corvette. :p
Not that complicated. The victim gets a new ship after paying 5% insurance. The offender has a hot ship that is wanted everywhere outside of anarchies. He can sell it for little profit (but only if he manages to get to a suitable black market) or clean the modules for 95% of the remaining insurance cost. The only problem is that it would be a way to duplicate engineered modules, so this still needs to be addressed somehow. Maybe they get removed in the process.

As you may know there is a ship theft story evolving on Galnet, I've heard people say what's the point?
Currently the story tells us a pilot steals a ship, it adds that he had been having vivid dreams before the 'theft'.

Now listen to David Braben and his 'vivid dream' I've bookmarked the the key moment (3:50) but is worth a watch from the beginning.

Nailed it!
Galnet writers already confirmed that the DBX stolen story was fully fictional and unrelated to the game. Writers and FDEV saw many players actually investigating this in the game and that's one of the reason why they are removing them from Galnet.

So are we gonna get Pilot ID cards or an implant chip to lock our ships when we’re docked or on a planet.?

Imagine SRV’ing to a hotspot, in the distance you see a ship coming in and Landing near your own. Next thing your ships lifting off and so is the other ship, leaving you high and dry. That’s a multi crew steal right there.... We’ll need a Fleet Carrier to pop in so we can remote something to the surface, otherwise we’ll be stuck for good.

Think Bishop remote controlling the Dropship in Aliens.

Oh man, I gotta stop with these hype ideas.......

I'm honestly terrified if FD ventures out on a journey to make us walk around. All the potential firepits, just look at multicrew and wings, wich allready are far, far away from stable..
My humble opinion ofcourse. If it comes, I will not use it, as I don't use wings or multicrew.

MDH

I've never had problems with winging up or multi crew. I don't do them for hours and hours, but I have spent a significant amount of time using both features without having any problems. Did you ever consider that your problems with PwP play don't stem from FDev's failures and are a network problem that you need to troubleshoot with your ISP and/or wingmates?

I think there should be the ability to steal NPC ships. I have seen NPC ships holed up on the surface of planets & I think it would make a great mission to get some of these using a scarab. It could be a heist driven mission taking 2 or more to decoy whilst someone else steals the ship.

At that point you can see whether it is worth taking back to the mission giver or seeing what you can get on the black market or even stripping the ship down for modules. It is the gameplay I (and others) have been waiting for.

Indeed, CMDR ships should never be up for grabs via this sort of gameplay. But NPC ships? That would seem OK! As long as it's not rediculously game breaking in income. eg: Stealing an Anaconda every 30 mins.

But we'll come back to the problem that if you do with with some other CMDRs, how do you spit the profits (easily)?

I guess it would be that only certain very limited stations would do full ship trading. Module salvage might also need some nerfing but you could see some excellent gameplay added especially if done on foot... or in space. My guess is this HAS to come at some point.

Indeed! It was back in the "go hunting for dinosaurs" era :)

But more seriously though, that was the period of some solid gameplay mechanics being discussed and proposed by FD. eg: Just the premise of having NPC Wingmen for more involved combat scenarios who you could give basic commands to (attack this/defend that). Wonder what ever happened to those plans, and the desire to implement them :(
