Federal Dropship- What's the use?

If the title isn't clear enough as is why would i want a normal dropship? The gunship has superior firepower and the assault ship had fantastic maneuverability with pretty good HP placement. Does the dropship bring anything to the table as far as FSD increase? Maybe it could be used as a decent passenger ship bc I really do enjoy the cockpit view and it reminds me of a little beluga in a way

I love the drop ship for base assault and skimmer missions. I've got a purpose built FDS for heading planet-side with missiles and beams. Jus load up on MRP/HRPs and watch the dumbfires do their work.

I mean, it's a multi-role ship. It's NOT a combat ship. That was painfully apparent to me when I tried it out in a RES site. That being said, it does have plenty of internal space, as Crusina said. I just checked Coriolis, and it can get up to 164t of cargo. That's nothing to sneer at, especially for a medium pad ship. In fact, it's only, what, 70t less than a type 7, on a medium pad, for 5 million or so less. The only real problem with using it as a trader is the jump range, and the Engineers can fix that.

(Also, first post with my new Avatar, yay!!!)

It's a decent & defensible miner, if you want something less pitiful than say a keelback in the medium-pad class.

You get the dropship for its large cargo capacity and excellent hull/firepower. It makes a very good combat trader/miner. I used to do CGs in a dropship in open.

Also, it is a very easy rank grind to get the dropship. Gunship is quite a tough rank grind.

Why get the dropship? Because you can do like Rinzler and make it into a nice little hulltank ship, seriously that ship can take a beating.

My 1st love is the cobra "the lucky lady" great multirole moved on to the asp and wasn't a fan for multirole so it's exploration only for that. Bought the dropship and set it up for multirole, armed with a large beam, 4 multi cannons two on the sides are turreted so that eagles still get hit as your FA turning to get them in your sights again. 34t cargo, srv, fuel scoop and a hull reenforcement and a ads it is my mission runner , with a grade 3 fsd , grade 2 dirty drives and a grade one over charged pp boost pre the revamped engineered it handled most things sent after you and that included up to master ranked fdl and pythons with a lot of FA off and boost I could hold the them off till the cops showed up and not loose to much in the hull point department but not the FAS as those things can face hug you and be facing you in a weird supernatural way. If you want a multirole ship with a great jump range but a huge target get a asp want a multirole ship that can take a beating get the FDS to work a small bubble around your chosen home system , it takes a beating more so since it has the military slots added and while it's no vulture or FAS in the movement department it still can move about if you FA off and give its drives a little love.

as others have said, it isn't primarily a combat ship, it a combat trader. no need to sport it besdide liking it, if you have a fully upgraded python, but till then it is a great combat-trader and miner, with enough cargo to ru any mission, the capability of landing at otposts, etc.

i had one for a long time for BGS work - backing minor factions in different parts of space, and didn't wanted t outfit (and finance) a second python.

As far as I remember the Federal Dropship was the first of the three you could buy when you rank up in the Federation. So at that time the Federal Assault Ship and the Federal Gunship were not yet available to you until you continue to grind for a better federal rank.

It used to be basically THE premier PvP hull tank back in the pre horizons times. Various armor/heat rebalances have stolen much of that glory these days though.

A certain member of SDC has been killing stuff in a hull tanked FDS with MRPs. Maybe it will make a comeback in PVP. With G5 DDs it is reasonably fast and agile. Plenty of firepower/cheap rebuy too.

also, it gives you 5 hardpoints, 4 medium - one large. it is one of the cheaper options to extend your modul storage...

I keep one stored setup for mining. Even if I get interdicted it can defend itself easily with only three hard points with weapons. Especially since it usually gets interdicted by asps which are a joke to fight.
