Federal Gunship vs Dropship vs Assault Ship

Well, the title says it all. What are the differences, what does each ship lean towards to, are some more dog fighting while others are more combat zone oriented?
Is this the prelude to strategic wings?

Or are they just different names and designs for essentially the same ship?

Currently the assualt is a fighter, the dropship is a multi-role, the gunship is fire support. I feel their real roles will be truly realized once horizons comes around though.

FAS : strong boom+zoom fighter, weak shields, strong hull, weak internals. Weapons - 2 large, 2 med.

FDS: multi-role, decent standup fighter, moderate maneuverability, slow speed. Weak shields, strong hull, good internals. Weapons - 4 med, 1 large.

FGS: flying tank. Very slow speed. Weak turn speed. Weak shields. Strongest hull in the game. Weak internals. Weapons - 1 large, 4 med, 2 small.

The FAS is getting a good reputation for being a strong and agile dogfighter. People complain about shields, but most analysis seems to be on paper at this point, people who actually have flown the ship report good survivability.

The FGS is getting a rep for being a bit of a dud. Doesn't have significantly more firepower than the FDS, it's slower, and the internals suck. It's hard to kill though.

The FDS seems likely to rise from the ashes due to an increased relevance of hull in 1.4, and the powerplant sniping nerf, making it significantly more survivable.

I had a harder time against a assault ship[ than a gunship. They are good. We get the clipper and I can shoot those down in a cobra. Gunships are a nightmare if they catch youy and assault ships are just a nightmare.

So why is the FGS so much more expensive?

Here's a comparison taken from this freakishly awesome site http://elite.nutty-gamer.com/

The Gunship seems like an awesome ship, but an armor tanker? Really? That only works in Eve where you can repair your ship constantly, I think it's shielding needs improvement. But aside from that, I love it.

That's a great site! Hadn't seen that one.

I'll say again though - why are the Fed *Ships so freakin' heavy? All 3 are heavier than an Anaconda, the DS and GS almost 50% heavier. What are they made of? Easy to see where the "Drop" bit comes from.

I'd love to think they have some purpose in Horizons that we're not aware of, the Dropship in particular.

Arrrggh ive just saved up enough to kit out the python that's been sat in a garage under a blanket and suddenly theres a bunch of cool new ships that I might want instead. ..

The gunship and assault ship are a very close match in combat. I flew a gunship in a duel with another CMDR using the assault ship. I had a large PA, 4 medium gimballed bursters, and 2 small turreted multis. I got him down to 3% hull before I was killed. I think one of the biggest reasons he won was after my canopy was blown out, I missed every PA shot, and those could have saved me. We still had a good time testing the combat abilities of each going up against one another.

The biggest thing is that both of these far outclass the dropship, in agility and firepower. Hopefully this will bring more pilots into federation ranks, as these are both pretty competitive with the clipper.

The Gunship has a fighter docking bay on the underside, which I think is its point - it's the cheapest ship that seems to have this feature. When Horizons brings docked fighters that ship should come into its own, but it's a bit of an Orca in the meantime.

Yes indeed

Because it has mystery hatch under it. Hatch very similar to condas docking bay...

It is rumored once horizons comes out, the FGS will be able to deploy a small ship for reconaissance in planets. Maybe because the FGS would be bad for handling in atmosphere.

Didn't try the other two, but I failed to master the FAS.
Hate the over and under L configuration, and it is the only ship I have ever needed the dreaded SCB just for NPCs in a CZ.

It's garaged (along with the FDL), and I am back in a Vulture for combat.

I been having doing alot of pvp in a FAS and I think it's best used wit no shields I was able to take on a vultures clippers FDL and pythons I hull tank no shields and use silent running alot could be most people are not used to fighting hull tank stealth ships but I was able to beat them soundly FDL gave me problems wit 4 multi but went 1 for 1 so on the tie breaker I used laser wit my rails instead of cannons and he don't even drop me past 60 before I killed em
