Feeling concerned for the game.

Well... today I had YET ANOTHER encounter that has me worried about the game. If you'll give me a moment, I'll try to explain.

I am flying a Federal Dropship. She's decently equipped, pretty tough and so on. I've set her up mainly for exploring, but she is combat capable for most things.
I've encountered a great many nonhuman signals, usually they're rated threat 5. I go in, there's a thargoid scooping up cargo. It scans me, then leaves me be to go about its business.

Today, I came upon a threat 6 signal, so I thought I'd look in on it, see what was there.

I approached and disengaged the frame shift. The warping down animation started, with the blue effect at the sides of the view... and I was already under attack. I heard something about shield breaching attack or some such, and my shields were immediately gone. I was still warping in, unable to move, engage any systems... there were no contacts on my radar... yet I was already being attacked.

Now, this is the first thing. It's not acceptable to attack players while they're transitioning. It would be like trying to play a hockey game where the opposition gets to start playing 15 minutes before you are allowed on the ice.

So, when I finally finished warping in at around 80% hull, I found myself careening at full speed toward a field of debris (even though I throttled down while transitioning), surrounded on all side by maybe 20 somethings. I didn't have a chance to look at them or count them, but they were all attacking. Outnumbered 20-1 by foes that were attacking be before I'd finished loading into the area... I had no option but to immediately warp out again.

This is the second thing, and the thing that most worries me.

The thargoids, up til now, have not been accessible to most players. Players like me, who are not kitted out with the specific special gear in the specific most powerful ships, simply cannot defend themselves against the thargoids. Now, I read that there is now another kind of thargoid ship, the scouts, which are described as being smaller and less resistant to damage. As such, I thought that they might represent thargoid content that everyone can participate in. However, if they're going to be assaulting players in vast numbers like this, then they're just as inaccessible to the average player.

This is especially bad because the thargoid story and related content comprises the main story of the game. As it stands, unless you have the exact particular ship with the exact particular gear, you simply cannot do anything with the thargoid story. Many players are going to come into the game and try to participate in this content, encounter enemies they can't compete with at all, locked behind an impenetrable grind, and just abandon the effort entirely. I feel the urge to do so myself. I mean, I've stopped bothering with nonhuman signals completely because there's nothing for me to DO in them. I see a Basilisk or Medusa, I can't possibly fight it, so being there is a waste of time. I go up against these new smaller ships, I'm outnumbered 20-1, so I can't possibly fight them, so being there is a waste of time. There's NO GAME.

Now, I know there will be those who tell me to "wing up," to get other players. Unfortunately, because I play solo, there ARE no other players, and I'm not going to play in open. I doubt I'm the only one.

As a result, I find myself worrying about the future of the game. Players are going to encounter this kind of thing and just give up. I hope the devs will consider this going forward.

The throttle not updating issue is already reported numerous times since 3.0 came out... hopefully it'll be addressed in 3.0.01.

As for being attacked while stuck in the transition, you may want to raise a bug report for that yourself, especially if you can reproduce it.

eing uncertain if I could survive another such encounter, I've not wanted to try to reproduce it.

Which system were you in when it happened? I'll try dropping in on one if I see any.

You could always take a Sidewinder, if you don't want to lose your Dropship...

There's always going to be bugs in live that never got revealed in beta.

For the simple reason in that everyone plays the beta to try out new stuff. Not play the old stuff to see if any bugs popped up.

Ergo the game goes live and since players didn't bother to see if any of the usual stuff was affected, new bugs.

It takes a few weeks before we start to see any of them quashed unless they're game breaking crash to desktop style. Mostly because it gives the Devs a chance to relax after crunch, let the new stuff stabilize, and see if any other changes need to be made.

This way they can roll out as few patches as possible while squashing as many bugs as they can get per patch.

This is normal. Don't worry about it. Report and move on. Give it a few weeks before you try again.

It's the same thing with all tech. I keep telling people the latest and greatest isn't necessarily so. Staying back a generation or two means solid, reliable, already been fixed stuff.

Great that you're warning everyone else but your concern is premature.

Honestly, the high speed drop is less an issue than the unplayable content. If THAT is also a bug, then I'm more hopeful.

What part of "Threat 6" didn't you understand?

hreat 6 shouldn't mean the game is going to start kicking me around before I can play. Also, I've seen threat 5, and it really wasn't any kind of threat, if I didn't attack. Again, there's only been 2 kinds of thargoid content... big ships we can't fight, and now small ships we can't fight. I don't think of that as positive gameplay.

Normal threats only go up to 5. Threat 6 is crazy land - only a maxed out fully engineered cutter specifically built to fight thargoids, for example, is supposed to be able to handle that solo (and then only by a highly skilled pilot...I don't think it was actually intended for players to best basilisks solo but some can). Class 7 means it needs a WING of maxed out fully engineered ships (medusa)...

Count yourself lucky for having escaped.

As long as Thargoids require the Guardian Module grind, they are off limits to me. I will NEVER drive around those little ruins, shooting stationary pillars, 50 times to get blueprints. If stuff like this is what they require, nope. Wont ever see them, more less fight them, since seeing them places me in a position where I cannot DO or interact with anything.

I want to fly ships in a persistent universe full of dynamic content. Driving around collecting rocks, shooting stationary pillars and staring at menu screens are NOT why I play a space sim. Its time for actual GAME content.

I dropped into one of those threat 6 surprise parties last night, and those thargoid scouts were definitely excited to see me. Managed to wake out before my shields collapsed, thanks to an SCB and G5 dirty drives. Not surprised a Dropship kitted for exploration didn't make it.

So, a few bugs, then? Hardly a need to turn it into drama central with such a sweeping thread title.
Just file a bug report and contact FDEV. They will check the logs and probably reimburse you (your commander, not you) for any losses. FDEV are really the best when it comes to going out of their way for their players.

P.s. take the hint. Threat Level 6

Even if you're not in open, you can still wing up or use multi-crew for thargoids in moebius or other private groups..

I agree, the game is doomed.

DOOMED!!!

didn't say THAT exactly... I'm just saying this is something I'm concerned about. I want to see the game do well, but I don't think blocking off so much significant content from the masses is going to promote that.

Well...

Its a threat 6, it is supposed to be exceptionally dangerous?

That said, the way Elite is build you cannot physically be attacked while transitioning, that simply isn't possible, since that part of elite is client side.

Now if your client lagged after loading in, that could explain it, you wouldn't see anything but behind the scene's your client would keep going.

Though in terms of 'wing up' yeah, a single player is simply not meant to go after a threat 6, that is simply part of the game. And that isn't likely to change.

As for worrying about the future of the game, the game has its issues, but this does not directly seem to be one of the main problems, if you chose not to play in open, or a group, then yes, there will be things you won't be able to do, but that is a consequence of your choices, not a fault of the game.

The game doesn't need to be popular in order to be successful. Games like FIFA, CoD or Minecraft are popular and they all suck.
The masses are actually the least I'd like to identify with.

Ah good. I thought we had been missing one of these posts this weekend :D

If it is of any consolation to the OP, I've seen thargoids twice. Once I barely escaped and the second time I couldn't escape because I came out of SC too close to the thargoid, bumped into it as I was shut down down by the thargoid and destroyed for being too close to the thargoid, whilst I couldn't control my ship.
