I'm having the same problem. Game crashes randomly, sometimes showing that error. I've also seen in the event viewer an event for "Error: {ERR-017} [HMD] WARNING: LED state change unverified!"

I've tried newest nvidia drivers, rolling back to an older driver, verifying the game files, reinstalling the oculus 0.5 runtime and lowering graphics settings. None of this seems to help.

Using a nvidia geforce 980 gpu on an up to date windows 7 x64 system.

Seems to crash at random intervals, but atleast once an hour, regardless if I am in supercruise or a conflict zone or a hyperspace jump. Game is pretty much unplayable atm.

Try to post each time your OS and Runtime version guys in case we see common value. I'm using Win7 64bits and runtime 0.6.0.1 and don't have this problem, but last time I played was 2 days ago (with 1.4) so I need to try today.

Edit : I forget: NVidia 358.50 with GTX970

Okay, I seen a post claiming that the nvidia 980 and 980 ti have some kind of problem with Elite and that if you under clock the card by 50mhz, it will fix the problem. I'll give it a try and report back.

Downloaded EVGA's overclocking utility and lowered the gpu clock from 1400mhz to 1290. This seems to have solved the problem for me. Played all night without a single error, while before, I couldn't go one hour with out a crash to desktop.

hmm...didn´t work for long :( after the newest driver update , the error is back ...

@Tempered.. and , did it still work for you?

It is still working for me, as long as I keep the gpu underclocked by 50mhz. Honestly, 50mhz isn't even noticeable graphically.

hmm, so i tried this underclocking tool, but for me this didn´t work either. Sometimes i can play 8 hours, sometimes 5 min... aaahh , maybe it just the old Runtime that doesn´t work good with the hardware..
