Finally good FPS!!!

For you that remember my old post, I started playing ED on a used laptop that I had drilled hole in it, put four fans under it, change paste and undercooking the GPU in order to have the bare minimum to play my dream game at low setting!

I was so excited when I finally bought myself a new rig with a decent 1080 Founder Edition GPU. Everything was butter smooth in pancake mode and when playing VR I had a good experience. I spent thousands of hours collecting ships and engineering them to the max (my favorite thing to do). I even meet another commander in the vastness of space that became a really good friend.

Then Odyssey came and I was so excited to finally have space legs, but as everyone know, Odyssey was not very much optimized. I could not have any good frame rate in station or on planet even with a 1080 GPU. I had 30-40 in station! This was very different than the constant 165 that I use to have.

Like many of us, I was very disappointed, but my understanding of how game are made me wait patiently. Unfortunately even update after update nothing major was giving me the performance that I was expected to have. I could have gone for a 60 at least but even with a lot of trying and tweaking I was still in the 30-40 fps in station…

This situation added to not having VR on foot and no ship interior really disappointed me. The argument for no ship interior being boring was kind of dismissive because we already need to walk a significant time in the hangar to the elevator and every time I really enjoy the immmmmeeeeersion, but this is another topic…

I then stop playing my dream favorite game of all time. I needed to wait for better performance to come back. Each update I was hoping for good performance to come back. While waiting, I was playing other games, but nothing fulfill my need of feeling in space like ED does. This game is just the best out there in term of a well balanced sim-ishh in space with so much to do that only imagination is the limit.

Yes, there is always room for improvement. Yes, I’m really concerned by the decision to not implement VR on foot, it’s really sad, but ED is still a very unique and amazing experience that I cannot get tired of.

So…, what about my title that say, finally good FPS you would ask and why did I not do a TL:DR and made you read all of that? This is a bit sarcastic and my answer is:

I (beep) BOUGHT (beep) A 3080 TI!!!

I can tell you that this game is just amazing on full ultra+ setting and run mostly smooth except sluttering at some place (can other commander that have a 30XX confirm that please). The bad thing is that not everyone can afford this. I never thought I could buy that card myself. I slowly and patiently accumulate my money to afford me that rare luxury…

I hope Frontier will be able to bring this game up to normal performance standard. There is a lot of whining and I understand so much, but at the same time, this game is still one of a kind, continuing to be amongst the pioneers in the gaming industry. Like many other have said, a lot of those complaints are because we love so much that game.

Game that let you enjoy hundreds or even thousands of hours have something special and that need to be considered. I have probably spent 200$ on this game playing it since more than 3 years. I really put a lot more on restaurant, cinema and beers. This is around 5.50 buck a month and in Canadian dollars. Nothing to complains here for so much fun and healthy evasion.

I think I just want more and I think we all agree that ED as a lot of potential that is only waiting to be invested in by FD.

I really like the new approach and the more open oriented community management and I hope ED will continue to expand for many years to come. Sally is really putting all her hearth and Arthur, Bruce and Zack are doing their best in a challenging time that was the launch of Odyssey. I lift my hat to them and say thank you.

In conclusion, I hope that they fix what preventing this game to run on normal popular computer especially in this time of crisis about the GPU market and for the upcoming console port.

I don’t need to be a white knight to fully appreciate that game. It’s a wonderful time to be a gamer and I am really grateful for that.

Thank you Frontier, thank to all the commanders that have a realistic positive mindset.

Might have to change your forum name to HappySky!
Lol, that's so funny! I think there is so much other stuff to worry in life than just a game. My pseudo name is after my old music band project, that was talking much about the fact that sad things happen in life and that we need love. When I say love, I mean in a scientific approach, not just the romantic side of it.

Thank you commander.

If you're a musician/creator - don't forget that here at Hutton Orbital Radio we ALWAYS like showcasing music from the rather excellent Elite community's big pool of creative talent.

mostly smooth except sluttering at some place (can other commander that have a 30XX confirm that please).

Update 8 pretty much removed the last of the unreasonably GPU limited areas on my high-end cards (I have an RX 6800XT in my main box and an RTX 3080 in my wife's 'workstation'), but there are areas in and around settlements where I am heavily CPU limited (on a 5800X and 3950X), with no practical upgrade route.

Tonight's FPS were definitely some of the best 143 in space and even hit over 100 in a settlement raid. Lowest I noticed tonight was around the 70 mark - will try more later

Do you mean that you have hiccups, like big drop or sluttering? I have them mostly close to planetary station, but I'm still new to be back to the game.

There is some loading stuttering during transitions, but some views in some settlements will dip down pretty low, with GPU utilization also falling.

One of these areas can be seen in the suit tutorial and is completely reproducible, as far as I've been able to tell. If you stand at the edge of the landing pad about 10-15m off the ramp leading up to the rest of the settlement and look into that concentration of buildings, that should be one of the more CPU limited areas that doesn't have anything to do with AI/NPCs. On a 4.2GHz Zen 2 part, frame rate will fall to ~45-50 as long as I'm looking at that scene. On a 4.7-4.8GHz Zen 3, it's about 60fps.

I'm seeing similar results with an RX 6700 XT and R5 3600.

With everything (except shadows) on highest settings, concourses are 70-100 FPS but when going to a settlement I'm seeing about 40-60 FPS that comes with reduced GPU utilization (roughly 60%) which is pointing to CPU bottlenecks.

I mentioned in a previous post that my rig is 5 years old but fairly decent spec for its time (with a 1080 ti added in). I'm getting a good experience now and must say that odyssey is really starting to feel like a good addition to the game. I'm doing only on foot stuff and actually enjoying the experience with fairly good frame rates now.

There can be improvements we all know that, however, I think they are now on the right path and I can already see progress by simply playing the game. I knew they would come good on their promises, and I believe that they are going to add so much to this experience *yes including ship interiors, I'm confident they will. Good work fdev, you are on the right track. I'm about to buy a new pc but, why bother... seems fine to me now (but actually I have to buy a new pc because my daughter wants my current one)

Just to add, whoever designed the station interiors is next level, the sounds the graphics are really, really good and I'm sure others agree.

Good vibe here brother. Take care and be safe. <3

Here's a screenshot of what I'm getting at 1440p no FSR/1.0 Supersampling and all options on Ultra except for the two settings for shadows which are set to high:
