Finding crashed ships.

Will the DSS help in finding crashes ships? Further more, is it possible to find crashes ships, in undiscovered systems?

Unless they are part of a permanent installation or a mission target then no, it won't help.

Ok, thanks. So the best method is to just do a fly over?

Yes, your average crashed ship is just a randomly generated POI, there are crashed ships that show a proper POI marker, like the Conda in HIP and the alien ship, but they are permanent fixtures, if you are just looking on random bodies just fly down to the correct height and cruise along until one pops up.

What are you looking for? For example only quite recently I unlocked Prof Palin and needed the crashed Thargoid ship, that showed up no problem

I would think the crashed Anaconda on Orrere would also show up. Either way, it's definitely worth a try doing the DSS only takes a moment, flying around can take ages

What about when you get one of those "Mysterious Contacts" that give you the Lat/Lon co-ordinates for a crashed ship somewhere and the message tells you that you that there was some good cargo and also gives you the code for 'hacking' the computer so you can use your Discovery Scanner on the ship that usually nets you about 1 Mill Cr. if you find and scan it.

I had a few of these before the 3.0 update but haven't had any since (I haven't been doing that many missions since the update so I don't know if these are still a thing or what)

Has anyone had the chance to check this out?

I’m just looking for crashes ships, in general. Been upgrading my fsd with an engineer, so my jumps are further now. So, I like to go out to distant systems and land on planets, but I just wasn’t sure if I’d find ships in systems that were undiscovered.

No such thing as 'crashed ships in general' - there are permanent crashed ships, which you will find, and there are temporary ones, which you wont (via the FSS/DSS). Not sure which category tip-offs come under.

I assumed there were some new permanent crashed ships to find post-3.3, but sadly that hope is fading.

While scavving for mat's on planet surfaces, I've stumbled across crashed Annie's which were, apparently, just randomly generated.
I think that's new. [where is it]

Not for tip offs. You still have to do it the old way for those.

Its way too hard to use the web based heading tools i find, must easier to just do one axis (latitude/longitude) at a time.

Sorry, I mean just random crashes ships that you might come across when flying around planets that you can land on. I guess, from what I’m reading, is that they just show up.

There's a POI bubble around populated areas, the further away you get from civilisation the less likely you are to find one. So very common in and around Colonia, the Bubble and the Highway, less and less common as you get further away. I think they almost stop appearing altogether around 5kly out.

Here my idea. Use the data we get from the Exploration data from videos like the one listed below. To give a 0.005 to .002% chance of finding Crashed ships. The most travel routes would have a higher chance of finding a Crash site. Anything outside the most travel routes would have no crash sites. I've not been able to confirm this since 3.3, but back in v3.1 I was reliably able to find random (non-persistent after re-log) crashed & still smoking ships. The trick was to search areas being circled by Search & Rescue NPC ships you would occasionally find patrolling near the surface. There was one particular System, Ashandras & less so, Sui Xing, that seemed to have frequent Search & Rescue ships patrolling. Every time I found one circling, I'd estimate its search area and either search by Air or SRV. I found a wreck every time, so I figured this is past coincidence, especially since I do spend ALOT of time in SRV's, and it's pretty rare to just stumble on one.
One time the wreck was even surrounded by trespass markers and guarded by Skimmers. I found 3 or 4 one night, and again the next. Each time after a re-log, to prove they weren't persistent wrecks. I never did get around to reporting it on the forums, but I have just dug through my old screenshots - was July 2018, so definitely v3.1.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone still finds Search & Rescue ships over planets since 3.3. I don't think I've seen one since 3.3 dropped. :/
