Newcomer / Intro First discovery and the Codex

It's official. I'm still confused as to how this codex thing is supposed to work.

I just journeyed to a system where no bodies had yet been discovered - Praea EUQ IP-S C6-1. According to the system map, I (Tyres) have my name against all bodies as "first discovered by". How is this reflected in the Codex? Or doesn't it work that way?

Sorry if I've asked this before but this is... confusing (yep, it's late, I know, and perhaps that Corvoisier I just had has addled the limited brain cell - singular - that I have).

The Codex is sort of like a set of I-Spy books one for each region of the galaxy, if you are the first to find something in the region you get the discovery credit in everyone’s copy but you still get credits and an entry in your copy the first time you find something already discovered in that region.

If you want lots of entries though you will need to travel to the other regions of the galaxy.

Much to the disappointment of many, the Codex is not, and apparently never was intended to be, a compendium of all of the things you personally have ever discovered. It's more like a trainspotter's guide to the galaxy.

Example: suppose you were the first person to ever discover an Earth-like planet in the Galactic Centre region, after the Codex went live (whether that planet was a "first discovered by you" or not). Congratulations, you get your name enshrined forever as the first person to do so - every single person now sees your name under "Galactic Centre - Earth-like Planet - Reported" in their Codex.

Suppose that didn't happen to you (and unless you happened to be in the Galactic Centre region on the day the Codex went live, it wasn't going to be happening to you). When you eventually arrived in the Galactic Centre region and you found your first Earth-like planet in that region, Congratulations. Earth-like Planets in the Galactic Centre region are now Confirmed by you.

Suppose you then find a second Earth-like planet in the Galactic Centre region. Nope, no Codex entry, you've already found one and checked that off the list. The Codex does record a few "records" (largest, smallest, hottest, coldest, etc) but these too are recorded by region. If you've found a couple dozen Earth-like worlds in the Galactic Centre region, the Codex is useless for creating a list of them all.

The net result: the vast majority of Codex discoveries throughout the galaxy were filled up within the first hour of the Codex going live. A few extremely rare planet types (such as Green Giants and Terraformable Metal-Rich) have taken longer to fill out, and some such things might still be out there in the various Regions for people to discover and get Reported. But finding them would be like searching for and finding a very specific kind of needle in a galaxy full of needles.

I think of the Codex as a sort of collection record. It records 'cool stuff' when anyone first finds it. That becomes the "reported" field. Then, when you personally find the same type of object you get a "confirmed" field.

It's just a checklist of stuff that's been found, with another checkmark if you've also seen it.

Also it's buggy and you can travel to where something is 'reported' only to find there's nothing there.

And you can find something new and scan it, but it won't accept the scan.

Overall, I've found it to be pretty useless, unfortunately. I was hoping for something else.
