First Discovery Tags

I just love the fact that in days to come, some explorer out on their first real journey, 30 kilos from known space is gonna drop out next to a black hole and say 'Dammit, that Stupid_hippy has been here already.' :)

I like the idea of lists of explorers who have visited a system, but that would get really messy...Maybe just a 'You are the X unique visitor to this star system'?

Err I don't mean to offend - but this is a game yeah?

No offence taken- and I do see where you are coming from.
But might another approach be to see ED not as a single game but as a set of very different activities that people dip in and out of as they wish? These include ones that are definitely rule-based games (forthcoming Arena combat, Powerplay), Then there are role playing 'semi-game' activities too (trading, bounty hunting etc.). All of that takes place in a big but limited area, where players have to interact to some extent, if only with NPCs.
Exploring is (and feels) very different because it takes place in a huge simulation of the entire galaxy, and usually with nobody else around, human or NPC. In that setting individuals have to choose their own goals and strategies. My point was just that people have already come up with a lot of interesting and different versions of what 'exploring' involves for them, and no doubt other versions will emerge in future.

As usual, I'll point out the obvious.

This ship done sailed. If there was a discussion to be had on this it should have been before Gamma/Release.

It's in the game and was billed by FD as a feature/reward to encourage exploration. For FD to reverse this after the thousands of hours CMDR's have already invested into earning their tags would destroy what little credibility FD has left in the decision making department.

It hasn't been changed - there was a bug that has been fixed.

It's not a feature FD has backed down on.

It caused discussion between exploreres about HOW IMPORTANT a feature it was.

They haven't reversed anything - and they still have HUGE credibility with me. They are doing their best to please everyone.

This thread is not a FD bash - it was a a high brow/low boil view on first tag.

*Zig* it is now time for you to bleat on about reading the whole thread to GJ51 - correctly :)

Agreed. However, FD could still add a toggle to switch the tags off for those who prefer that. I may like them but why not have the option. 'Course based on how the galaxy map works today, you'd have to reset the option each time you start the game.

And oh what a game changer that would be. Agreed a tad annoying but better to have the option than not.

I would love to have loads of player defined options (that I won't bore you with) - that if the worse case(in the present) I had to set before loading the game - i would take rather than not having the ability to select the options and have to join in with the masses.. eerrrgggg

Ok agreed the galaxy map is a bit poo, but as with all things with this great game - Give it time :)

On the galaxy map option thing...

If you go to

C:\Users\<your Windows user>\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\

and delete the Player folder (only done this once, suggest backing up or only sending to the recycle bin just in case...) then it should remember the settings you actually want.

Worked for me anyway.

The tags in system maps are actually a community service!
Otherwise people would feel the need to scorch their names into every system body they could with a laser.

too bad there couldnt be a link, maybe created after first discovery of the system, that would send you to the UniversalCartographics.com site. like the link to the FD store when you click on the paint job option in outfitting. here they could parse the data from the games database and offload it to the web server. this would be easier to handle all kinds of queries.... who discovered first, the list of visitors and dates, perhaps see the route(s) cmdrs took on different trips out.

i really hope they have something like this in mind for the site and just not "record breakers". id like to see an online version of the galaxy map as well there.

I just wish I'd called myself "Kilroy".

I like the tags. After a while you start recognizing names as they have been busy little beavers - Leito, planetskipper, Atomicglide, RIJN, Evolvedmonkey; I find it interesting to see all the different explorers who have been out in an area, the trailblazers. I wonder how far someone will have to travel to find a "new discovery" in another year? I'd be interested to know how many planets have been discovered to date.

Well, we're in the first 6 months and there are plenty untagged withing the 1,000 Ly range.

And I think that will be the case for some time. The amount of stars within that reach simply is mindboggling. I scanned an area a couple of months ago 700Ly to the east of the bubble, 700 down. I tried to find that area last week, without checking the notes and just couldn't. Eventhough I must have scanned a couple of hundreds of systems there.

What I'd like to know is whether the XBOners get their own "Discovered by" tags. I'd feel a little sorry for them if they have to go out really far to start tagging. And all they would see close by are these names that mean nothing to them.

I don't think they will get their own discovered tags. I just started playing a few weeks ago but finding tags on systems already just pushed me farther out. The Xbox players to me just seem like new players getting the game for the first time on pc.

Does suck though as a new player because even I felt there wouldn't be any systems left for me to find. Until you get in the galaxy you really can't grasp just how huge it is.

Indeed, I am up to approximately 500 scanned systems since I left my home base and most of them are first discoveries... of course when coming up to black holes and nuetron stars there are plenty of already discovered systems but usually only on the fastest route jump ranges... there is so many in between that have not been discovered... and I am not even 2Kilyes out yet...

Also I agree with your original post Ziggy, I explore to leave my 'mark' on the universe, so when someone goes to my first discovered ELW, they go rats this one belongs to Excalibus :D

And yes I have found a few in my current (and previous) journies within the first 1500 light years from Sol...

Tonight I scanned approximately 15 (off hand) systems, none of them discovered, and I found about 6 or so terraformables, dozens of heavy metal content worlds with 14 in one system alone, a water world and a number of gas giants, plenty of icy, and rocky and rocky ice planets too and I am starting to get 'over' scannning them a bit so perhaps I will head back in soon and cash in and do something else for a little while...

I was under the impression Xbox was on completely separate servers, so I'd assume this would cover all aspects of the background sim too - including exploration.

Different servers for game play, but we are all using the same galaxy.

I have a grand total of three (count them. THREE ;)), systems with my name on them and I am inordinately proud of them. Would be very upset if it was taken off.
