Horizons First Engineering Attempt

Ok. I have what I need to do a DETAILED SURFACE SCANNER - LONG RANGE (any level) but if it is possible to just go straight from the Standard to the LVL 5 in one jump that is what I would prefer that.

Question is, is there any path to doing this that doesn't require a lot of combat??

Lei Cheung is probably your best bet. No combat required, but you will need to give him 200 tons of gold!

You won't be able to go straight to grade 5 as you don't have the rep to do that (it sounds like you haven't actually unlocked any of the engineers yet), so you might just as well wait until 3.0 drops on Tuesday and start your engineering from there.

I have FELICITY FARSEER and Tod "the blaster".

I have not seen a REP requirement except for Bill Turner and I have no trouble getting ALLIED Status. I have it in 7 minor factions already. It can be done just selling Exploration Data.

Requirements:
Gain Friendly status with Alliance of Independent Systems. You will also need Allied status with Alioth Independents to get a permit to access the Alioth starsystem.
Provide 50 units of Bromellite

The Bromellite requires mining ICY rings, but from what I have read,, if I do it in a system with high security, I should have cops available to do the heavy fighting.

I'm referring to reputation with the specific engineer, which you gain either by doing mods or in some cases by selling exploration data or perhaps cashing in bounties with them.

You start of with grade 1 rep with any engineer you unlock, and have to build that up (as described above) to unlock the higher grade mods, so until you have unlocked grade 5 reputation with a specific engineer you won't be able to go straight in to do a grade 5 mod.

In the new system, starting on Tuesday, you will have to roll all levels of modification for every module, although the lower grades typically take one roll to progress you to the next level.

Anyway, you don't have much time with the existing system, it will be changing on Tuesday when 3.0 is released.

Humnnnnn.... The path to Bill Turner goes through Tod "The Blaster and that is a lot of combat.

Ok, I have Allied status with at least 3 minor factions that have Black Markets so meeting THE DWELLER requirements should be reasonably possible to get to LEI CHEUNG. The question is, does the 200T of gold have to be in one load??

Nope.
Those requirements can be done piecemeal, aside from the distance based ones obviously.

Ok, I have decided to get right with THE DWELLER to get to LEI CHEUNG.
I have an AspX already so it is a matter of making a cold build to attract less attention. I have already satisfied myself that having ALLIED status with the faction controlling the station with the Black Market seems to reduce the number of scans on approach. So, cruise around in the system with the BM and find something in DEGRADED USS that I can sell at the black market. One item in each of 5 places and then switch to planetary salvage to get stuff to sell to BLACK HIDE.

It's easiest just to accept a mission from some random station to deliver goods.
Then steal those goods and sell them to different black markets.
Just make sure to steal from a faction you don't care about.

You don't need to sell anything at Black Hide, you need to give Dweller 500,000 Cr.

Selling *commodities will gain you rep, but that won't really matter in a few hours.

* These you can buy at various stations.
Use the market info here if you want to do some trade: https://eddb.io

THE DWELLER
HOW TO DISCOVER
Common knowledge.

MEETING REQUIREMENTS
Deal with at least 5 black markets.

UNLOCK REQUIREMENTS
Pay 500,000 credits.

I am not interested in a life of crime. All I want to do is "meet him". So, sell one item at 5 different Black Markets. Just logged in and looked.. I have 7 systems where I am ALLIED that have Black Markets. One system has two factions and both have BM.
Going to wait for the UPDATE before I start this since, as noted, there is apparently going to be some major changes.

See here - https://inara.cz/galaxy-engineers/

Click on anyone with detailed surface scanner and see how they are unlocked, but for the G5 with Lei Cheung you need to unlock The Dewller first and do some crafting with him until he gives you access to Cheung, you have traded in at least 50 markets and give him the 200T of gold (either bought commodities or by mining).

You don't need to start a "life" of crime, but black markets will *only* buy stolen or illicit goods; ie they only deal in crime.
That's why it's a black market.
I was just giving you a very easy way to meet the requirements.
Some engineers will simply not be available if you are strict about role play like that.

Search Inara (I posted above) by going to the star system you are currently at, E.G Sol - https://inara.cz/galaxy-starsystem/367/ then click on nearest on the left and choose Black Market it will show all the BMs near you, check what is illegal in them (in red), make sure you choose an orbiting outpost station not a large space station as you are less likely to be scanned. Then try and find somewhere nearby selling the 5T of things you need. I think I managed to buy 5T of liquor and 5 BMs nearby to sell them in when I did it.

Looks like you an I think alike. I just don't plan on buying something one place and wandering around with it as a target. I plan to go to one of the systems I already know about, pick something up at a USS and sell it at the local BM. Then move to the next system.

What do you think you are going to find to sell, at a USS?
Thargoid stuff?
Most of the stuff found in USSs cannot be sold at all.

Humnn. Bob,, Almost everything I find at Degraded Emissions is now legal salvage. Often also see LIQUOR, ART WORK, and ANCIENT ARTIFACTS which are almost always ILLEGAL SALVAGE. The trick is to get the high value legal stuff before the RESCUE ONE NPC's.

Right, and that makes up only a portion of USSs.
That's exactly my point.
Whereas you can simply go buy what you need, or steal it, instead of searching randomly through space.
You could be done in 20 mins, and it's no more illegal than what you are doing anyhow.
It's just not random.

Just trying to help.

I know you are Bob. I am a cheapskate. Rather pick it up for free. As for the time.. When I started the game I was 67 years old and I come from a family that regularly lives to 100 so figured I had 33 years to play. I am now 68 years old so I still have 32 years to play.

As a fellow cheapskate, and also a pretty old one to boot, that's why I suggested just stealing some stuff.
It's free and quick and you can do it almost anywhere.
Consequences are entirely avoidable.
You can even role play your theft and steal from a minor faction you find something to dislike about.

Lots of people avoid searching USSs, I don't mind too much myself but it is random.
I assure you, you will have plenty of time to search USSs in the future, hahaha...
It's also a riskier proposition imo.
You're more likely to find hostiles jumping in and out of USS instead of just making the direct trips that you'll have to do anyway.

That said, "blazing your own trail" is what this game is supposedly all about.
Just trying to share a little insight.

I am playing SOLO and so far, I have never ran into a hostile in any Degraded Emissions or Encoded Emissions. From what I have experienced, these two make up at least 70% of the USS in Anarchy. Get one every 2-3 minutes when cruising a system collecting exploration data. The most dangerous thing is the RESCUE ONE guys running over you as they hoover up everything in sight.
