First impressions

Yeah, it was a bit easier for Pc players as there wasn't half as many possibilities when Elite originally launched in 2015. We got to learn things gradually as they got added.

The radar is pretty tricky at first. Easiest way to fathom it out is:

Triangle in the middle is you with 2 lines showing what you can currently see. Then other objects/ships/things are circles which have lines coming up/below and a square/triangle icon.

The circle is where the thing is relative to you on a non-3d space (e.g. ignore up and down so target is ahead and left, behind and right etc).
The line, direction of line and length of line shows how vertically away something is.

So lets take an example:

The green object is fairly distant in front of you, slightly to the left and slightly up from your current position.
The white object is a medium way to your left, very slightly ahead of you and significantly below your current position.
The nearest red object is in sniffing distance directly ahead and right, very slightly below.
The far red object is behind, a bit below and a significant distance away.

Hopefully that makes sense.

As for colours and icons:
White = object like cargo canister
Green = Allied ship (often security forces)
Orange = Unknown ship
Red = Hostile ship
Blue = Winged ship

Triangle = Hardpoints deployed
Square = Hardpoints retracted

Solid icons = AI/NPC
Hollow icons = player
Flashing/distorting icons = Out of sensor range, something is there but you don't know what.

So using the same above example: There's cargo, 2 hostiles and 1 ally within sensor range screen.

Again hopefully this helps. If you want specific combat advice (or any other specific help) give me a shout. I know most things but the things I don't I can usually point people in the right direction.

Thanks Alex, that has made it a lot easier to understand![up]

Sounds good! I wouldn't worry about the training missions too much - been playing forever and still can't beat those (but then again, I don't pew pew - lots of other stuff to do :) )
I couldn't get past training mission #3, of the original training missions.

All 7 Training Missions were a walk in the park, except one... The 4th one (Advanced Combat Training)...
It took me about an hour to successefully complete it. The first ship is an easy target but then i kept on being ambushed and annihalated by the two ships that come afterwards.

For me, the trick was using all 4 pips on Systems when under fire and then quicky change those 4 pips into Weapons, when i had an attack window. Also, using Chaff at the right time is of the utmost importance and can save our lifes when under heavy fire. By the way, altough Tanya Blaine tells us that we should first disable the enemy shields with pulse lasers and only after use missiles, the missiles can (and should) also be used, in order to take down the enemies shields quickly. ;)

I'm utterly gobsmacked by this game, I really am. As another Elite player from ye olden times, it was absolutely KILLING me that I couldn't play the latest game in the series (I use Linux on my PC and don't have an Xbox). By happy coincidence, just as I bought a PS4 Frontier announced the PS4 version of Elite Dangerous and I was a very happy chappy!

I just adore this game already. It really does feel like Elite, just brought bang up to date. It's everything I could have hoped for and more. And yes, there are some technical issues on the PS4 (not pro), mainly some lagging dropping out of supercruise, but nothing remotely close to dealbreaking.

Thank you Frontier!
