First mission and feeling like giving up :(

OK, so I am trying to complete the first mission. Ime managed to get to Mowson dock and fly to it VERRY SLOWLY but when I get close it just wizzes pas. Tried like 5 times.

Is there a video to help with this?

PS maybe there is a good beginers guide walking them through what to do when you start step my step/key by key.

Ive also flew into the sun and rings twice. To be honest, if I hadn't spent £100 on a joystick to play I would have given up but willing to give it another trey. Finding it rather unenjoyable.

Ben

PS maybe there is a beginners guide for the novice/crap player like me;).

It sounds like you're not exiting supercruise when you get close to the station? If you are in the starter ship you should have Supercruise Assist, which will drop you out of Supercruise automatically when you get close to the station. When you target the station in the left panel, the second icon should be for Supercruise Assist.

This is a good video, Supercruise Assist is at 1:22 :

I think first supercruise and docking are in the tutorials like 777 says - they are worth covering, and even experienced players find things in them that they were unaware of.

Good luck Ben, it does get easier, but is a cliff to begin with!

OK found the tutorial and doing it but it's not really helping. The station is rotating. I have flight assist on but it does not seem to be helping. Also the reverse seems to be disabled, which is very annoying and seems silly.

My display has also gone weird, I can't see the scopes and other stuff that shows speed etc. See attachment.

Not doing well!

Looks interesting but going so fast ime now confused about a load of new stuff. Supercruise assist and docking computer. sound great but seems I need to install/outfit them. no idea how to do this ;(.

2 British Pence says he won't be back, the game seems to dislike him and his 100 note joystick.

Never buy expensive gear for something you haven't tried yet.

Thank you for your words of encouragement. I had tried it and found the keyboard very difficult and with stick managed to do training mission (got stick and throttle together used and selling should be easy). Most people have been helpful and encouraging, I will assume you are having a bad day ;).

No. This forum is full of those. I can help you in about an hour if you're still having issues. My advice, if you're needing help with a particular in-game mechanic, try https://inara.cz/ forum first in the general/game talk section. Have you exhausted videos?

Good luck OP, figuring it out is half the fun ;)

It may be a little cringeworthy for you, but if you post a video capture of your attempts any mistakes will probably be obvious to others so they can advise you.

At a guess, I'd say you don't have your destination targeted.

Looks like you've accidentally activated "HeadLook" and are looking out the left hand side of your ship. The controls are at the front. Turning off headlook will put the controls back in front of you.

I recommend half speed for supercruise without assist when you get to less than 500 light seconds from your target if you're still learning. It's fast/slow enough to get there without overshooting and gives you plenty of time to disengage supercruise when you're close enough. Entering and leaving Supercruise is the same key/button depending on how you've configured it.

The station rotates while you're outside it. Once inside rotational correction kicks in and you can fly to your assigned landing pad. Definitely watch a video on how to dock or do the training a few times. It's the hardest part. It's really easy once you get the hang of it though.

If you get a chance to purchase a docking computer, it will help you immensely until you can copy what it does and land by yourself.

Above all, meet the challenges and the game will reward you. It really is a steep learning curve at first, and you've done the right thing to opt to fly your ships with a joystick 🙂

Don't give up! It's got some pretty complex concepts you need to grasp, but once you get them, it's really quite easy.

First off, the "sim" is based on physical realities.

The theory behind the frame shift drive is based upon the real-world theory that if we can compress the space ahead of us, we will not violate Special Relativity (see Einstein). It is theoretically possible to achieve, but we are not even close to it yet IRL.

The FSD works not by accelerating the ship to faster than light speed, but compressing space in front of it.

Hyperjumps are similar to how supercruise works, but for much larger distances (that is how you jump between systems).

Supercruise is faster than light speed transit across a single system, but not a huge massive jump like hyperjump is.

Due to various game mechanics at work, certain functions are ONLY available while supercruising, while other functions are ONLY available in normal space.

Nothing in the ship is automatic unless you explicitly make it so, so if you start a hyperjump, you must stop it (set throttle to zero) before crashing into a star. The same for supercruise. If you're moving from an entry star to a station, you're already in supercruise when you enter the system, so you must exit supercruise when it says "SAFE TO DISENGAGE" in blue.

If it turns red and says "TOO FAST", you will either crash, or just fly by your target.

There are other things about supercruise, for example you must be at a safe, low speed to drop out of supercruise otherwise it will perform an emergency drop and damage the ship.

The exception is if it says "SAFE TO DISENGAGE" in which caes the ship is already fairly slow, fairly close to the target, and the computer will decelerate the ship accordingly so it is a safe exit to normal space.

When jumping between systems, the exit point is always next to the largest mass in that system. This is usually the primary star of that system.

This is just the basics of FSD and SC and HJ within ED. There is more, but this will be enough for starting.

I have mapped to my stick SC and HJ functions. These are as critical as throttle or pitch and roll axis.

A starship is controlled in 4 dimensions.

When I first started, I lost ships and nearly ran out of credits more than once and felt as you do now.

Don't take it the wrong way but making mistakes and working it out on your own will pay dividends later.

There's quite a bit of information available about ED, it's just not neatly arranged. This search for knowledge is a significant part of the game and makes you a better player.

If I were you, I would join a wing, you can get to know fellow players better and draw from your wing-mates experience.

Don't give up!

OP, do you suffer from any motoric health issues? Game requires some precision and steadiness of hand in terms of controls, on either input device. Certain equipment and settings can help you out big time, but it's still can be quite challenging at times.

Step 1 remove the supercruise assist, Step 2 bind thrusters 10 50 and 75 % keys, when your target is 10 sec away thrusters to 75%
